For the mini and rail cars that is.

And when I arrive at the powell street bart station, I was gonna walk 2 blocks to a chipotle (haven't had it in nearly 2 years) and then 2 more blocks to the marine hotel on sutter..is that a safe walk? I mean are most streets safe to walk on, in town?

That walk is fine. The Marine Memorial Hotel? You're about to hit the Tenderloin, but you should be fine. Your comfort level might depend on how used to an urban setting you are - but if my wife can walk in much worse at night (true Tenderloin), then you can walk from Powell St. Bart to the Marine Memorial.

But...Chipotle? Egad. You are like two blocks from a good burrito place - El Castillito on Golden Gate and Leavenworth - if you're comfortable walking in the Tenderloin.

Also, if you're looking for some good bars - there are lots of great ones popping up in the Tenderloin. A new one I checked out last week was Redford on Geary and Leavenworth. Not cheap, but good drinks and great food.

If you don't want to venture quite so far into the Loin, then check out Cantina - they make great Pisco Sours and Caprinhas, and it's right by your hotel - about a half block closer to Union Square, right on Sutter.

Other good options for a cocktail are Rye and Tradition, but those two are deeper into the Loin.

Well, to the south and west of Powell Station is the 'Tenderloin' which gets bad pretty quickly. If you head up Powell to the north to Sutter, there's no problem at all.

As for passes, muni and BART are separate systems, so you can't use the 3 day SF muni pass on BART. You can get a clipper card (walgreens sells them among other places) and load money onto it then use that on many different transit systems. But that's more for convenience (not having to wait in lines to buy tickets) and doesn't save you any money. BART charges by the distance as well, so watch out. MUNI is per ride.

You can walk safely on all streets in SF. Downtown especially, and actually the Tenderloin and Broadway. Just don't walk around acting like a victim (like staring at your smartphone looking for directions to a restaurant or hotel). Know your destination, how to get there, and walk like you own the sidewalk (which of course you do). The street riff raff in SF and the East Bay cringe when faced with someone that knows what they are doing (ie. authority).

you guys are awesome!! Thanks so much for all the help. Hopefully it's not as difficult as I'm making it out to be. But I am def a country boy, big cities still make me a little nervous. BUT these last 3 years in Hawaii have definitely opened me up a bit, so...

but thanks again!!

You mean west and northwest of Powell. South is SOMA, and while ugly, is very gentrified. Things start getting Loiney west of Mason, north of Market and below Geary. Honestly, it's perfectly fine in the daytime in terms of safety.

Hawaiibuck, there are a couple of iffy blocks (around Turk/Taylor is probably the worst), but you won't have any reason to go through them. There will be no problem going up Mason from Powell St to your hotel, even in the middle of the night if you so choose.

Truly, you've gotta try this BUILD place...WAY better atmosphere and food, GREAT beers on tap, and crazy close to campus, at the corner of Shattuck and Bancroft...and THREE big screens showing all the games...zero grunge factor...
