I get paying Franklin the big bucks to be Offensive CO, with his system and so far results, potential recruiting benefits, due to his system being used in many HS, although I think he was grossly overpaid, could have been signed for much cheaper. BUT why the hell did we pay Buh, who was making $215k at Wisconsin, $500k, over twice what Clancey was making ($245k) last year, when he was not a proven commodity and probably could have been had for $300k or less? What's worse, if he does turn out to be a bust, his salary is guaranteed for all three years. From a business perspective this does not make sense!

Who made these ridiculous decisions. For that matter why did we pay Dykes so much, over 4 times his former salary, when we could have probably doubled it and still signed him, although I really like him and think he will be a good coach for us.

As far as results, I understand that we are missing several players and we are very young, but the defense has looked awful so far, probably the worst I have seen us ever have, mistake after mistake, huge gains by the opposition to start the game, no pass rush, bad tackling and now the 3rd worst defense in the entire country WTH!

On the other hand the offense and special teams has been exciting and fun to watch, trick plays, fake punts, fake field goals, going for it on 4th down, even if we are not winning the games, so far the offense and special teams have been fun to watch!

Time will tell, that's my rant, Go Bears!

Those frantic 4th down substitutions are ALL on coaching. He has no idea what he is doing out there.

He was at Stanford as a "Co-DC," and obviously was not good enough to become full DC and was not retained, so he went to Nevada as their DC for 2 years, then took a step DOWN (guessing not retained again) to LB coach at Wisconsin.

For some reason we were dumb enough to take someone with this career trajectory and throw 500k at him on a multi-year contract. If you look at his counterparts throughout the league it will leave you bewildered.

Agreed. Yes, and him missing the fact on several occasions that OS would go into the super hurryup when they were in the redzone, to put the defense of their heals and still try to substitute was bordering on inept, especially due to the fact that is an integral part of our own offense. I met Buh, seems like a nice guy, but so far the results do not dictate him being one of the top paid DC's in the conference.

On one hand, I'm happy Cal is shelling out the big bucks to attract and keep good assistants. At least it means that we've anted up along with much of the rest of the conference.

OTOH, I have my doubts about Buh, although he has time to change my mind. I just wish that we were able to give Tedford a similar salary for him to use on assistants several years back. We might have seen a return on that investment.

As far as Dyke's salary, that criticism is pretty weak. MacIntyre makes more at Colorado. We're paying him market rate at a BCS school. You can't promote a coach and only give him a little more than what he made in the WAC.

Point taken and I agree about paying to keep good assistants, but doubling your salary is not "a little more". We are paying Buh more than Dave Aranda makes at Wis, which would have been a much better hire for us and he is a "California" guy, with much like our offense, innovative schemes, decent success as a DC. The only innovation we have seen so far, is allowing the opposing offense to run wild on the most porous defense in Cal history, begat in a young season, time will tell....

We live in a time when "Equality" is the highest absolute. I would like to find out who during negotiations insisted Buh's and Franklin's salaries should be similar right off the bat. Was it Sandy? Sonny? Buh? A megadonor? If it was a donor with deep, bottomless pockets, that's his (negligible) loss. The high salaries for both coordinators do negate the low salary excuse for poor performance (as long as those who fail are shown the door with relative expediency).
