I love Franklin but if this glove was available to Goff, he should have had him try that during the week. Franklin's quotes reflected a cockiness about dismissing the rain, and it backfired on him. Even gurus make mistakes.

the most rainfall in any 24 hour period in Eugene history, and it started raining at 6:45 PM!
Bottom line;I believe even if they had time to practice with wet balls or gloves it would not have made a difference with a freshman QB in that stadium, with that crowd, with that talented and #2 ranked Oregon team, in that monsoon.....I have never been in that heavy of a rain in my lifetime.

Dismissing weather as a factor in the Pacific NW was short sighted and stupid. We are a very undisciplined, young and inexperienced team that was playing out of our element. Coach Franklin wins this weeks asz-cap award.

I went to Eugene. I had this trip planned for many months. I've seen a dozen Cal Oregon games at Autzen, so I know the drill.
Rain was not forecasted for Saturday until late last week. If you looked at the weather reports during last week, it was forecasted to be 65 and no rain all week long...until Thursday arrived and it changed to 30% chance of rain. I was watching this all week, and told my group on Thursday to pack their rain gear.
This chance of a "storm" accelerated quickly on Thursday and Friday. But my group golfed Saturday morning in Eugene, and while it was overcast and muggy (not cold), we had no rain. We tailgated at the stadium from 4 pm until 6:45, again, with no rain. The wind was starting to blow, and some pop up tents started to take off in the wind. In the parking lot, heavy rain was forecast to arrive at the start of the second half, about 9 PM. As Goff notes in his interview, even in warmups, it was just sprinkling. I believe the staff felt that rain would not be that big an issue as it became; the most rainfall in any 24 hour period in Eugene history, and it started raining at 6:45 PM! The team likely didn't prepare for rain because it wasn't going to be a factor until they nearly left on the plane to go there. They don't practice for rain if it isn't forecasted....hindsight is always 20/20.
Bottom line;I believe even if they had time to practice with wet balls or gloves it would not have made a difference with a freshman QB in that stadium, with that crowd, with that talented and #2 ranked Oregon team, in that monsoon.....I have never been in that heavy of a rain in my lifetime.
Edit: And I'm sorry to admit I left at halftime...I always try to stay to the end.

They knew there was a good chance of rain but there was a cavalier attitude from the coaching staff that shows from their post-practice interview. Then, when asked during the post-game about how this offensive system thrives in rain, all Sonny could say was,"I was wrong."
Practicing with a glove and wet balls is not a complicated nor time consuming thing to do. Even Tedford practiced with wet balls. There's no excuse here and at least Sonny is willing to admit that.

It's great that Sonny took the blame. But like Oaktownbear says, it really doesn't matter what Sonny says (takes the blame), JT says (execute, fly around), or what Gilby says (I wanna some food) -- what matters is the product on the field. But yes, some on this board were saying there was a great chance of a heavy downpour early in the week. There were threads about whether it would help us or hurt us. I understand, Oregon probably beats us in a monsoon, snowstorm or a hurricane. But I thought they did not put Goff in the best position to succeed. Live and learn.

(**Oh, Gawd! Just so you know---Did you even read DrDanger's post above?---I read your post.)
Too bad you didn't look at the PNW weather patterns coming from the NW. It had been raining in Corvallis (50 miles north of Eugene), Portland and Seattle for most of the week.
However, it's Eugene at the end of SEP. Clueless Coaches beware, hypothermia is not out of the question in AUG/SEP.
I've been to Autzen (and Reser) several times...AUG, SEP, OCT, NOV...sometimes warm and sunny, but other times foul weather is a factor...cold/rainy, sunny/cold, the night of a silver thaw (OCT), and thunder/lightning/rain/cold (in AUG).
Clueless Coach Franklin was lost in space. Tragically learning by doing.
BTW---It makes sense to leave the game in SAT's deluge. Even the idiot Duck fans were scampering for a dry warm place in some bar to preen their feathers.

Oregon must be the most rain-prepared team in the nation, and yet they were fumbling all over the place as well. Guess they didn't practice with any wet balls last week up in Eugene.
