Seemed like Goff opened up in this interview more than in the past, IMO.

I love Franklin but if this glove was available to Goff, he should have had him try that during the week. Franklin's quotes reflected a cockiness about dismissing the rain, and it backfired on him. Even gurus make mistakes.

I went to Eugene. I had this trip planned for many months. I've seen a dozen Cal Oregon games at Autzen, so I know the drill.
Rain was not forecasted for Saturday until late last week. If you looked at the weather reports during last week, it was forecasted to be 65 and no rain all week long...until Thursday arrived and it changed to 30% chance of rain. I was watching this all week, and told my group on Thursday to pack their rain gear.

This chance of a "storm" accelerated quickly on Thursday and Friday. But my group golfed Saturday morning in Eugene, and while it was overcast and muggy (not cold), we had no rain. We tailgated at the stadium from 4 pm until 6:45, again, with no rain. The wind was starting to blow, and some pop up tents started to take off in the wind. In the parking lot, heavy rain was forecast to arrive at the start of the second half, about 9 PM. As Goff notes in his interview, even in warmups, it was just sprinkling. I believe the staff felt that rain would not be that big an issue as it became; the most rainfall in any 24 hour period in Eugene history, and it started raining at 6:45 PM! The team likely didn't prepare for rain because it wasn't going to be a factor until they nearly left on the plane to go there. They don't practice for rain if it isn't forecasted....hindsight is always 20/20.

Bottom line;I believe even if they had time to practice with wet balls or gloves it would not have made a difference with a freshman QB in that stadium, with that crowd, with that talented and #2 ranked Oregon team, in that monsoon.....I have never been in that heavy of a rain in my lifetime.

Edit: And I'm sorry to admit I left at halftime...I always try to stay to the end.

Wow, record rainfall in Eugene is really saying something--and it was not even forecast? Amazing. From the sound of it, it was a rare warm tropical end of summer monsoon (from Hawaii?), and not the typical Northwest constant cold misty drizzle from the Gulf of Alaska.

I was happy they switched QBs, and I know it is a lot to ask, but I would have been really happy to see a mid-game switch in strategy also to account for the conditions--i.e., go to a power set and just run, mixed in with some play-action. Or put Boehm in and run his wildcat-like offense.

I agree with your bottom line, there are things that might have made it closer, but we were not going to win that game.

Dismissing weather as a factor in the Pacific NW was short sighted and stupid. We are a very undisciplined, young and inexperienced team that was playing out of our element. Coach Franklin wins this weeks asz-cap award.

I thought this part of the interview from Kline is great . You can tell the kid just wants to have fun. And he was talking about modifying his throwing motion too.

This is an outstanding post. I copied parts of it and emailed it to my friends who didn't get to watch the game on tv and who have a hard time picturing the environment in which the game was played.

They knew there was a good chance of rain but there was a cavalier attitude from the coaching staff that shows from their post-practice interview. Then, when asked during the post-game about how this offensive system thrives in rain, all Sonny could say was,"I was wrong."

Practicing with a glove and wet balls is not a complicated nor time consuming thing to do. Even Tedford practiced with wet balls. There's no excuse here and at least Sonny is willing to admit that.

(**Oh, Gawd! Just so you know---Did you even read DrDanger's post above?---I read your post.)

Too bad you didn't look at the PNW weather patterns coming from the NW. It had been raining in Corvallis (50 miles north of Eugene), Portland and Seattle for most of the week.

However, it's Eugene at the end of SEP. Clueless Coaches beware, hypothermia is not out of the question in AUG/SEP.

I've been to Autzen (and Reser) several times...AUG, SEP, OCT, NOV...sometimes warm and sunny, but other times foul weather is a factor...cold/rainy, sunny/cold, the night of a silver thaw (OCT), and thunder/lightning/rain/cold (in AUG).

Clueless Coach Franklin was lost in space. Tragically learning by doing.

BTW---It makes sense to leave the game in SAT's deluge. Even the idiot Duck fans were scampering for a dry warm place in some bar to preen their feathers.

It's great that Sonny took the blame. But like Oaktownbear says, it really doesn't matter what Sonny says (takes the blame), JT says (execute, fly around), or what Gilby says (I wanna some food) -- what matters is the product on the field. But yes, some on this board were saying there was a great chance of a heavy downpour early in the week. There were threads about whether it would help us or hurt us. I understand, Oregon probably beats us in a monsoon, snowstorm or a hurricane. But I thought they did not put Goff in the best position to succeed. Live and learn.

And that my friends is called a fair post. Acknowledge a mistake. All I ask. You'd see a far quieter OaktownBear if this happened on a more regular basis. I wouldn't have made a peep about PSU without the arguments that they were good, for instance.

I wonder how much of the bravado on the offensive staffs part regarding the rain was a show of confidence in the offense in the light of a practice mistake the coaches made.
Was Sonny going to come out and say well now that it's 100% likely to rain our team is screwed? He almost had to say that it wouldn't matter and hope for the best, any sign of weakness is not doing the team any favors.

I agree, Cal wasn't going to win this game. That said, the way Cal loss was embarrassing..lost it on the first 3-4 series and looked unprepared for both the rain and what OR was going to give.

At least the rain stuff is "fool me once, shame on me..." deal, so I don't think it happens again. I do think there might have been some Texas arrogance about West Coast weather but now they know. All I can say it's lucky there's no late season away game in the Palouse. Hope the staff is willing to take advice next season.

EVERY weather site all week had at least 90% chance of rain (not showers) in Eugene starting mid-day Saturday. The rain started around 4PM where we were tailgating and just got more pronounced as the it got closer to kickoff. The first half was a harder rain, but it continued the whole game and as it got colder, it was just as uncomfortable! I heard that the kickers practiced all week with wet footballs...

those good ol southern guys have probably never dealt with rain like that. i mean you get rain in the south, sometimes downpours also. but that oregon rain will make your hands numb. (hence the glove now)

I golfed in Seattle Friday afternoon. We had a brief drizzle, but rain was not a factor. The weather report for most of the week leading up to the game said 65 degrees and 0-10% chance of rain, but that suddenly switched on Thursday or Friday. Even Friday night the forecast was for "up to 1/2 inch of rain." Does anybody know how much rain actually fell?

You should always prepare for the worst case... If there is 50% chance rain assume it's 100%

Oregon must be the most rain-prepared team in the nation, and yet they were fumbling all over the place as well. Guess they didn't practice with any wet balls last week up in Eugene.

Unlike with Bellotti's teams, Chip and Helfrich both prefer to practice in the indoor football field (Moshofsky Center) to get more quality practice time in, especially during times of rain.

Ducks certainly didn't fare very well during the deluge with Masoli in Memorial in 2008...lol.

But Saturday was definitely the most & hardest it's ever rained at an Oregon football game....I only stayed until the end of the 3rd quarter. Never seen Autzen so empty to start a 2nd half before...yikes!!

You must be golfing the PNW banana belt.

http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/seattle-wa/98104/september-weather/351409

Otherwise the weather has been setting SEP precip' records in the PNW.
