I like it, too. It brings some nice perspective to what is unfolding down on the field. I'm not the hardest core fan, but I've been to Portland State and WSU. If I'm not there at the lowest point, I won't enjoy it as much when we peak.

We've hit a bottom. How long do we stay here? I saw a few bright apots in the UCLA debacle. May we trend up from there?!

The collective intellect of this board is about 10X higher than BRO so I don't think we've gone that far (yet at least :p)

I'm not sure I agree that a lot more has to go wrong for us to continue losing. From my vantage we could plateau at the level we've seen the last two weeks and not have significantly more injuries and still not win again this season.

Our offense has gotten worse and the defense slightly better. Not a great place to be in this league right now. Hopefully we'll actually improve but other teams improve too and we seem to be far away from competing against even average teams at this point.

I agree CU is a possible win as are UA and SC but I would make us underdog in each game at this point. I think 1 win is a distinct possibility.

I understand your personality is not to gnash your teeth about the negatives but others are the opposite. Everyone is different and as others noted, at least people still care.

That's fair. Here is why I think the second half should be better. Will it produce more wins? I hope so.
  • No real gimmies remaining on the schedule, but the back half is still the friendlier half;
  • Not likely to continue to suffer injury at this unprecedented rate;
  • They're further down the learning curve on their new O and D which should only grow stronger;
  • Early replacements who were totally green are at least gaining very valuable experience;
  • The law of averages suggests we should get a couple of bounces to go our way.

That's where I'm at.

Also, I wish I could share your sentiments regarding BRO.

Um, just a few things to get off of my chest here.

In no particular order. Let's see,

We're not going 1-11. Please.

We have 3 "winnable" games on the schedule. I think we finish 3-9. 1-11 and 5-7 are equally likely, IMHO.

No, Bigelow should not have been starting last year.

Based on what? Do you forget that he had an injury in the off season, and CLEARLY is not as fast or able to break tackles as last year?

Quote:

Sonny is not going to get fired, and I seriously doubt anyone on the staff will be let go this year. Those calling for it are just embarrassing themselves.

Agreed.

Quote:

Goff is pretty good, Kline is pretty good; as was the case with their predecessors, these coaches know better than me which of the two is most up for the task at hand. They know better than you too.

I think people want to see Kline for the entertainment value of a new QB. Not because he would make a difference.

All these night games are getting old. In addition to whatever else, it's hard to bring young ones out, and build that tradition when all the games end after 11.

Night games, IMHO, are AWESOME when it is a big game with two good teams. Energy and excitement are much higher than a day game.

Watching Cal get thrashed all night is NOT fun in the dark and getting home late, and is not fun in the direct sun without being able to bring in water. To me both are bad, with the sun taking the lead. For Cal (and as you mention, building a future stable of fans), it is dumb as ass.

Also, if you're truly a fan of the game, and a fan of the school, it's ok to be disappointed.

Oh good. We can be disappointed

Quote:

Or as my son used to say, appointed. "Papa, are you appointed with me? No son. Never."

Oh wait, it's not OK to be disappointed.

And, of course, Go Bears!

Agree, without reservation or qualification.

Based on the fact that he's been nowhere near as good as either Isi or CJ, and no, a meniscus is not the difference. This isn't absolute, but it wasn't a ligament, it was a meniscus. Many can come back after just 3 weeks for a meniscus. I've had both ligament replacement and meniscus surgery, there's no comparison.

Your disappointment is on you. Do what you must, but try not to get it on the rest of us.

And no, I'm never appointed with my son.

I like this thread. Maybe all hope for this board is not lost. It seems like most people here really would prefer to cheer/ vent/ debate Cal football in a respectful way that acknowledges we're all Cal fans.

It would be really nice if this board was the kind of place where everyone could express their thoughts and opinions without being on guard for attack or ridicule from people who disagree.

I also like that most people seem to be adopting a more respectful attitude toward our students and employees. It's a lot easier to have discussions about players/ coaches/ AD from a place where we acknowledge contributions and offer criticism as opposed to adopting the attitude that coaches and players on scholarship are our servants and therefore entitled to any and all abuse. Personal attacks, insults and conspiracy theories directed at coaches and players demean everyone and incite outrage and flame wars.

It's important to keep in mind this is a very public forum. Players, recruits, coaches, other teams' fans and media read this. Elevating the discussion in the face of a very disappointing and frustration couple of seasons is a big positive.

Go Bears!!

Why? Well, there aren't any bandwagoners that's for sure! I get the feeling that only the Bear fans who really care (albeit at different depths and levels) are left standing here..There is little to argue about (Goff vs Kline is typical QB discussion. Injuries, lack of depth, inexperience are all given now). We all seem to like Sonny and what he has brought in and started up. What remains is optimism and hope. This is the minimum requirement for the Cal fans who keep coming back to Memorial Stadium, and to also post on this lonely and unusually depressed message board these days. Keep it up boys!

Great post, Drizzlybears. It's nice to read some sensible thoughts and a sensible thread with no woe is us, Tedford obsessing, excuse making, whining, or firing fever.

I like seeing the changes, improvements, new wrinkles and new personnel in each game as the season progresses. It's getting better. Go Bears.

Call me/them "fair weather fans" but setting aside precious time on the weekends to watch us get slaughtered is becoming less and less appealing. Even my wife asks why I subject myself to such torture if I know we're guaranteed to lose (and she went to Cal!).

And at least I'm in the bay area. I can't imagine how it is for those who actually fly in from other parts of the country.

Not a fair-weather fan here. Unfortunately, having weathered the monsoon in Eugene I now have fewer excuses for not getting the yard work done. As in: "You'll stand in the rain for five hours but you don't want to mow the lawn because of a little drizzle?" (In her defense, she tells me to golf as often as I can.). The weather should be better for the UW game here in Seattle in two Saturdays, and if all else fails, I've got tickets to the USC game for my second annual take-a-kid-to-Cal game.

You see, we have no choice. We love Cal and must suffer along with the exploits of her teams. When the winning comes it'll be all the sweeter. Besides, there's always somebody suffering more than you are. Any Cub fans out there?
