Cal recruits 17 and 18 year olds and spend lavishly on the recruiting trips. F "stars". There are so-called 3 stars who "get it" ... and are on All-State and All-Conference lists, and some who aren't ... but they're athletes who did it and "get it" and want Berkeley on their diplomas. Berkeley is neither "rationalization or justification" ...
UC Berkeley is what it is ... tough, and we're getting mentally and physically tough recruits.
