So what is the deal with Goff?

He looked very promising when the season started, but as he has gained experience he has regressed. He looked like the QB of the future (and he may still be) but I would open the competition back up in the spring.

3.8 yards/attempt on a night against a bad defense and when the backs were running the ball with the receivers we have?

Either Goff isn't the guy or the TFS system sucks! Or both!

Yes, he is a freshman and he should improve a lot, but... man... he is regressing in my eyes. He has a full season of experience by now!

Most damning for Dykes is Goff and offense regressingand his sideline demeanor is horrible.

It is because the "TFS" sucks. It works against poor quality safeties and bad tackling WAC CBs. Against a BCS conference Defense it is simply unable to get the YAC that this system demands.

People always say that the franklin system has been bought by many high schools or in lower level division colleges. Maybe that's where it belongs, not in a major college. So called experts claim that it's so easy to learn. Well it's very easy to defend against as well and had been figured out by opposing coordinators.

Goff is regressing. He missed a lot of throws tonight.

But a lot of the play design is bad, too. Twice in the first half we throw a quick screen to the sideline that relies on an offensive tackle to go out and block a DB in space but he doesn't have the footspeed to get out there in time and the unblocked DB makes the tackle for no gain. A second later, the OT arrives on scene, but only in time to help his receiver get off the ground. This is bad play design. Our WR screens are consistently stopped for a loss or a small gain because we have one fewer blocker than the number of defenders out there. Why bother.

It's very unusual for a Cal QB to start their career off looking promising, before descending into mediocrity.

You guys do realize that there were 50 mph gusts at Folsom Field tonight, right?

Their guy threw for like 375, with two wideouts over 100.

He also had time to throw and better play calling. Also, much of the yardage was YAC.

Our DBs and LBs also lead the world in missed tackles. This season can't end soon enough. Whole team needs a reboot.

Goff is not the issue.

It's a stretch to even call it tackling. For the most part they were a bunch of head waiters waiving Colorado's running backs to the end zone. It was an affront to the game of football.

Yes, this is true. The screen for a long TD by 19, the long catch and run by 22, all due to poor tackling. Dozier in particular had a bad night.

Yes, but for some reason, for some people, that's not a factor in assessing Kline's performance in the opportunity Dykes gave him so graciously.

Looked to me like we could play better "d" with just 10 guys out there.

It was frickin' windy, when both offenses were on the field. Did I hear right that their QB is also freshman? The kid threw pretty well and connected on 64% of his passes. If indeed he is a true freshman with this being just his 6th start, he took care of business quite well.

Weather is often a factor in games, especially this time of year. It's loser talk to whine about it.

Interesting comment from Goff after the game.

Goff said the Bears have wholesale changes to make before next season.

"We need to change our mentality about stuff, the way we practice," he said. "We're going to need to change a bunch of stuff if we want to be successful next year."

I pin it 70% on TFS and Dykes on how they managed him. He should have RS or at the very least be kept on a competition with Kline. I thought Kline starting 2 games after the OSU game should have been warranted, and Goff would have benefited from some time watching the game and learning from other people's mistakes. Yes I said Kline would have made mistakes, maybe even more than Goff, but Goff would have actually benefited from being able to observe and digest within himself instead of being thrown to the wolves every week and trial by fire, all to accomplish what?

I still believe in Goff, but I have 0% confidence in Dykes and TFS to shape Goff to the best that he could be.

The defense is the bigger issue.

However, I am VERY concerned that he is not improving. I would have expected for him to throw for twice as many yards against Colorado - and he did not manage to throw a single TD!

wait...weren't the Goff apologists claiming that if TFS had a running game that it would open up the deep ball to Goff? lol did you catch that stinker he threw for an interception?

Most of Goff's deep ball stats are distorted by yards after the catch. he has no deep ball. anything beyond twenty yards he basically floats out there. :headbang

opposing DC's know this and they have adjusted the game plans accordingly, I don't think he'll be racking up videogame numbers anytime next year, maybe in his junior year. but by then he'll be 2nd string behind Rubenzer. I guess we'll never know.

seriously, dafuq were SD and TF thinking. If I want to watch crappy coaching of this quality I'll go watch Pop Warner football.

on the bright side, looks like Bigelow got a bit of giddy-up in his hitch. haha
this game has got to be a bit of a confidence booster for him.

Kline is a Tedford recruit. Goff is not. Not saying one is playing better than the other, but it's a fact that one needs to consider. Goes with the rest of the players too. Also helps explain some of the effort/culture stuff going on.

Yeah bad memory, I think you're right. But he wasn't actually at Cal was he before Dykes came? So he had an option of leaving and Dykes actually had to pitch to him to keep his commit.

Anyways I'm not trying to make some grand conspiracy theory. I'm just saying that the quotes we're seeing in the news today are indicative of a split of the "current regime" and the "previous regime". It's unfortunate really because a good coach should take the players he has and adapt the system, not vice versa.

Goff enrolled early. He was steadfast in his commitment to Cal. There are always challenges in a culture or regime change. We have plenty of real problems without creating false ones.

Yup will be interesting to see how the program is dealt with in the off season and who stays and go leaves (both players and coaches). Will speak volumes about how the next few years will look like. I'm hoping for the best but I can't say I have a lot of confidence right now.

I like our young nucleus, I just hope they will have better coaching soon.
