Sandy is not going to fire Dykes

Story here.

The problem is, if he failed in picking so many assistant / coordinator coaches last year, what gives her confidence that he won't make mistakes again?

Also in the article, Shaw had nothing but positive things to say about Dykes. He wants nothing but continuing to lay 60+ points against the Bears every year.

Goff believes he dislocated his shoulder from the FIRST hit by Skov, the targeting that did not get called. Good thing he stayed in the game so he could break the passing record <sarcasm>

*Goff said he believes he dislocated his right shoulder on a hit by linebacker Shayne Skov with just under 14 minutes left in the second quarter, but he remained in the game for two more series.

"I told them I wanted to play," he said, "so I went back in," Goff said.

His final pass of the day, a 62-yard completion to Richard Rodgers with 7:06 left in the first half, gave him Cal's single-season records for passing yardage (3,508) and total offense (3,446).*

Sonny Dykes and Cal's season in three little paragraphs. I'm so proud. GRRRAAAAH. Congratulations, Coach. :sarc:

And, young Mr. Goff, I sincerely wish you future success at Cal. I think you have talent. I also hope to hell something else happens to take the place of this *accomplishment* so you can have a more esteemed team-oriented story to someday tell your children and grandchildren about your Cal legacy.

Sandy should not be firing anyone. She was a PC hire. She is not D-1 material. And Tedford's winning rebuilt the stadium. Not the damn AD who came to Cal after the winning had started. She hired a great women's BB coach. Even the blind squirrel...

David Shaw has complete confidence Dykes will turn the program around. That's all we need to hear to know the right guy is on the job. Barbour knows too, and with Shaw's endorsement, she can pat herself on the back for making the right hire.

Shaw: By the end of his 5th year, I am convinced the Big Game margin of defeat with Sonny's leadership will narrow to the 17-24 point range, a more than 50% improvement over 2013.

Based on his post game quotes regarding the size of our players, whatever Sonny does about the coaches he better do it quickly and he better put in an order with the football gods for each player to grow 1-2 inches and 20 to 40lbs in 9 months because if he puts a team like this year's 2013 team on the field, they're still going to have trouble with physically matching up with teams on our schedule and making tackles. Another year in the schemes may mean that guys are in the right positions, but they have to be physically ready to play which was a problem at the OL, DL, LB, DB and ST positions.

I'm sure Shaw wasn't thinking "gee, if I say nice things about Dykes, maybe they'll keep him and wing the BG forever."

Sometimes coaches say things just to be nice and sometimes they see things we don't see. The coaching world thinks very highly of Tedford and Dykes. Cal fans don't think as highly of these coaches (though amazingly a number of Cal fans NOW support retaining Tedford, LOL!!), and the coaching fraternity has indicated its disdain for Cal fans, who are seen as schitzo, disloyal and unreasonable (which we kinda are - we want a Rose Bowl team and complain about paying a Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl-level coach's salary).

That's not to say the opinions of coaches is sacrosanct, but at least worth listening to. The CBB coaches had a very low opinion of Bozeman, who they saw as dishonest and undeserving of his HC position (and they were right), but a high opinion of Camp (and they were wrong).

It's good to weigh observations of coaches, sports writers and intelligent fans of other teams in the evaluation process. We shouldn't put all our trust in these opinions, but they provide a balance against the hyperemotional opinions of Cal fans.

I'm fine with keeping Dykes. Until Sandy is replaced there's no point in attempting another HC change. I'm done with her, she can go burn some other school's money.

The opinions of other coaches mean nothing. They are members of the same fraternity/union and never say a bad word about one another because,

1. They might have to work with that person some day; and

2. They will see that person at the annual coaches convention.

Only when a coach clearly violates the COACHES' code of ethics, repeatedly, egregiously, might some veiled reference be made. Bozeman is the case that proves the point. It takes that much to get a peep out of these guys. Coaching effectiveness? Forget it.

Oh, and by the way, all coaches have disdain for fan opinions/opposition. Fans are supposed to yell like crazy when the other team has the ball, give like crazy, even if they can't afford it, and otherwise rubber stamp everything the coach says or shut up.

Cal fans are treated with particular disdain by coaches, commentators and pretty much anyone else following football. As I said, they ask the world and expect the coach to deliver it for 2/3 the going rate... but they won't actually show up at the game until AFTER the coach delivers on their demands.

Cal fans complain about firing the winningst coach in Cal football history a year after the fact, then complain that he was given too long of an extension, then complain he wasn't fired sooner, then complain we didn't keep his assistants after he was fired, except for the ones who left while he was here, for which he should be fired and then un-fired a year later because, dammit, it's all that PC-hire AD's fault. If only we had someone with a penis as our AD - wait, I didn't say that, I meant someone with football experience like Kessl- I mean like Pat Hayden. There's no excuse for Cal not being in the Rose Bowl and I'm not attending one single game until they bring back the pro set and stop running on first down. Maybe utilize a spread like Baylor or Oklahoma State. But what we really need is a defensive-minded coach whose also an offensive and special teams genius and who will get us to the Rose Bowl on a salary that barely pays for a 6-win-season-level coach, which is a ridiculous amount to may, by the way. We're a natural draw and should be as good as Michigan while donating 1/10th of what UM's fan bases contributes. And no I'm not sexist, crazy, delusional, childish or unreasonable.

All twenty of the voices in my head called Tedford "Poncho" and not one of them complained about it. Just because you never heard a fan use the term doesn't mean it didn't happen. So I can call the AD whatever I want, LOL for calling me out. I PLAYED FOOTBALL IN HIGH SCHOOL - scored three TDs in One Game, so I know our entire problem centers on the QB.

So after we fire the woman and put in a man... with experience in hiring football coaches... AND we pay him in leftover pizzas from Blondies, AND he starts recruiting 5* talent that's secretly dying to come here but doesn't want to play for an AD with a vajayjay, AND we win every game leading up to the Big Game... THEN I'll come to the games and support the team and resume my annual donation of quarter to the Cal Athletic Department.

But only if the game is at 2:27pm, so I don't miss my kid's soccer game but it's not too early for me to get to bed at a decent hour. And only if they give me more leg room and put in more flushing toilets. And of course this is all dependent on the weather being clear but not so sunny as to cause a sunburn. And the offense utilizing the run while not being boring. And if they are wearing the right uniforms.

It's not like we Cal fan ask for much. How hard is it to find an AD who will LISTEN?!?!

The vast majority of Cal fans, even on this site, have a pretty level headed view of what has just transpired with regards to the firing of Tedford and the hiring of Dykes. Tedford needed to go and it looks like Dykes may been in over his head. Those are the dominant views I see on this board. Pretty reasonable if you ask me. David Shaw's opinion that Cal hired the right guy is based on nothing but being polite. And we have this season to show that. He's got nothing to back up his opinion.

Yikes, Beachy. You shouldn't confuse your reading of an internet board to equate with the real world. You are giving way too much weight to dissenting opinions on BI. I think most of us are far more grounded than you make it sound.

Fans are fanatical in all fanbases. Imagine what you would be reading on a Bama board after a 3-9 season with Saban and then 1-10 with the next coach.

My opinion is that Tedford left the program in worse shape than anyone could imagine. I don't know that Dykes is I'm over his head yet, as for fans on this site having any idea about what is going on I have 2 examples to refute that

1- majority wanted Snyder let go after first 2 years

2- many questioned Tedford's firing

Fans do not know what's going on
As for Dykes we need to see how he recruits the next 2 years and we need to see marked improvement on the field

But I can see this board wanting Snyder gone. I don't even remember how his early Cal teams played. I'm sure most fans thought he was a bust. Many questioned Tedford's firing but boy on this board most of his ardent supporters finally came around to seeing that he was done. I think we are both saying that hiring and firing FBS football coaches is a tough deal. I won't argue that.

But here's the thing I will argue: fans know one thing, how the team is playing on the field. And true football fans (football enthusiasts if you will) can see signs of quality or signs of ineptitude. They aren't right in all cases but the more I read this board the popular opinion (of those who seem reasonable) tends to be the correct one. And fans don't have to concern themselves with all the other things that can cloud ones judgement about the quality of play, like an AD must, like opposing coaches must, like even tv commentators must. We don't have to worry about budgets or our jobs or a producer or about a fellow coaching fraternity member, etc. The beauty of sports is that from a fan's perspective there really isn't too much bs. You either see decent play or you don't and you don't have to explain it or have a viable solution for it. I always find it silly when posters respond to someone by asking what they would do if they were coach. Just because you can see a problem doesn't mean you are any good at solving it. And this is why it was so stupid of Sonny to even reference the BI opinions during one of his press conferences. We don't have to know anything about coaching to know a bad team when we see it. Hey, bottomline, Sonny will get another year to show what he can do. It will be a long off season though.

BTW, you made a good, thoughtful post. I appreciate that.

Unfortunately, Dykes has lost the support of many, many fans after the worst season in the history of Cal football. I think he's done, unless a miracle occurs next season. He doesn't have two years to recruit, barring that miracle.

Weber State has fired its coach after just two seasons.
Jody Sears went 4-19 in his two seasons as coach of the Wildcats, who play in the Big Sky Conference. The northern Utah school announced Sears' dismissal Tuesday afternoon.

Athletic director Jerry Bovee acknowledged Sears inherited a difficult situation but added that he didn't see the progress he wanted. Sears was given a three-year contract in November 2012.

Is Dykes going to get more than 3 wins in 2014? The question is, what if he gets the 3 wins in 2014, is it enough for him to keep his job? His two year total would be 4-20. Just something to think about.

Hate to tell you, this has nothing to do with our AD being female. Rather, SB is simply a bad AD. I am a woman who grew up watching and loving football since the age of twelve. Maybe not playing football in HS like you because it wasn't made available to women; although, I did gymnastics, basketball, and swimming. Nonetheless, I, like you and many others here, saw problems with SB's decisions; often in advance and not in hindsight. Make your point without spinning off into a sexist rant.

1. Whole lot of self loathing

2 Cal fans aren't treated with disdain by anybody but Cal fans. Mostly people don't care about us because our program sucks. Cal fans have been supportive when the team has done something to support. Pretty much like most west coast fans.

3. Some of your points are valid. However, maybe it is just me, but I don't think flush toilets are much to ask.

Sandy should not be firing anyone. She was a PC hire. She is not D-1 material. And Tedford's winning rebuilt the stadium. Not the damn AD who came to Cal after the winning had started. She hired a great women's BB coach. Even the blind squirrel...

are a good reason to avoid the site.

She was hired because of her proven success in raising money. When she came to Cal, an earthquake during a Cal home football game would have killed upwards of 20,000 people. We had the worst training facilities in D-1. She built a new stadium and new facilities at a time of financial crisis for the state and the university, fighting the tree sitters and lawsuits for years. Right, even a blind squirrel could do that.

I think many of us acknowledge that Sandy has skills when it comes to donor relations. That is a big part of the job and she does deserve a hat tip for that. It helped get a stadium done.

What isn't at all clear is that she understands/appreciates COACHING and may lack (and this may be a blameless function of sexism) the ties throughout the revenue sport world to be able to reach out and make solid selections.

I think we all have to now admit that the Sonny hire was horrifically bad. THe fact that he was "the best we could do" simply speaks oodles of how overmatched she is when it comes to finding the right candidate. Does ANYONE want to argue that Mike Montgomery was anything other than a case of wonderful luck - a HOF coach who loves the Bay Area who was on the beach at precisely the right time. Does anyone have ANY confidence she is the one to manage the challenge of the sometime in the future MM retirement? I don't. Nor, as we found out, did she have the ability to manage the Toshgate affair to any sort of decent conclusion. Lets not even mention the long-festering problems of academics under Braun and Tedford.

But, ultimately, it may be nothing more than bad timing for Sandy. We MUST make another coaching change after next year. Football is too important and the program is in free fall. I can not imagine donors putting in the sufficient $$$ with Sandy whose main message will be "I learned so much from complete failure, just give me another chance." If we stay with her, get ready for a hire from even something less than LTech at probably under a million. Lots of HS coaches ready to make the leap to the Pac-12 so I am sure we will be served well.

Can Sandy Barbour hire good coaches?

I say the book is still open on Sonny Dykes. Here is a list of her football and basketball coaching hires.

1. Tommy Bowden (Tulane football), went 7-4, then 12-0 in two seasons.
2. Mike Montgomery, HOF coach, for men's basketball (109-59)
3. Joanne Boyle, women's basketball (137-64), Sweet Sixteen
4. Lindsay Gottlieb, women's basketball (57-14), Final Four

2. Mike Montgomery, HOF coach, for men's basketball (109-59) Fortunately, MM was available.
3. Joanne Boyle, women's basketball (137-64), Sweet Sixteen I was a JB fan, but I believe she underachieved with the talent she got from the previous coach, plus all the transfers and not being able to develop a bench.
4. Lindsay Gottlieb, women's basketball (57-14), Final Four Agree 100%
