Three thoughts:

1) I would not be surprised if Buh resigns soon. He will continued to get paid the full DC amount, even as a position coach. So this will be good for us.

2) I thought of our four defensive position coaches, Sacks and Stewart did a better job than Cachere and Buh.

3) We paid top dollar for Buh. It wasn't like he was all we could afford. Our coordinators are extremely well paid.

#1) Buh's under contract to coach for us, if he voluntarily resigns from a coaching position with us he is no longer guaranteed his money. I'd look for him to ride it out a year (like he did with Stanford) until he can wrestle up another DC position at another school next season.

Not sure what all the wows are for. The only wow is why it took so long. At the end of the season when Dykes still backed Buh, I had zero hope for the program. Now I guess there's a glimmer of hope, but we'll see who he can get to work for him.

Look for Buh to be the LB position coach....

That would be an interesting move.

In fairness, the players share some of the blame for the deficiency of the 2013 defense. A coach can only do so much. With injuries, inexperience and a tough schedule Buh obviously did what he could, but clearly it wasn't enough. We hope that Sonny learned from this experience.

No doubt the players share some of the blame.

You can blame a guy for making a bad hire, but you can't make him justify it. Obviously he thought Buh was a good choice at the time. Any explanation now would just be Monday morning quarterbacking.

Okay, fair enough. I guess my reaction is if it happened before, with your arch rival, you'd think about it or should at least be aware.

So, is Pendergast available? He knows the area and he can coach.

1. Normally hate Silver's tweets but agree with everything he's saying today.

2. Thread title should have been simply "Buh Bye" not "Buh-bye Buh" or the chosen "Bye Buh"

3. This is a savvy move, let Buh choose whether or not to mail it in for a year and be embarrassed. Hopefully he quits and saves us money.

Players take the blame as well. However the lack of fundamentals on D were astounding. No one seemed to tackle well, or understood pursuit angles and the DBs never played the ball. Unfortunately those are coaching.

On the positive side, Furd improved (how much?) after the same move, so Cal should as well if the replacement hire is decent.

im not sure pendy is the permanent option that we are looking for because he is not a motivated or very good recruiter. but then again working for Dykes may not be a very permanent position as Dykes himself still may be gone soon

Given the potential pension implications, I don't think Buh will walk away for frilly reasons. If I'm correct, he needs 3 years in the UC system to qualify for his pension, and at 3% per year (x 3 years) of his highest pay rate, that is approx. $50,000 per year in retirement. Nothing to sneeze at.

At about 42 years of age, that's a great retirement start, and gives him plenty of motivation to excel the next 2 years.

Sonny scapegoated Buh, but didn't completely remove his buddy..F him..there is no "wow" here - We get another third tier DC since nobody is going to come and coach with a losing program for the next few years and get taken out when the HC gets fired and replaced by another third tier HC..

I'd guess that the later tweet (season ticket renewals) touches on one of the main reasons. Probably a lot of people not renewing. Consequently some change has to be made to convince the undecideds and, maybe, some who were not going to renew.

Seems pretty clear from the timing that they were waiting for all the bowl games to be played, for whatever reason. I would assume this means the changes have been known internally for some time, maybe even communicated to recruits. Still, it's a welcome development and something I wasn't convinced was actually going to happen.

I think this makes sense....also, something no one mentioned is that maybe Buh actually took stock and realized he was in over his head and actually suggested stepping down and maybe restructuring his contract. Yes, I know most coaches/players have EGOs so large they would never admit this, but sometimes logic and reason win over....we'll never know but I'd like to think this was arrived at mutually.

No I am not happy. Our football program continues to bottom out and I am overly tired of the thinking that "hiring" new coaches can cure what is deeply flawed institutionally with Cal football. We are currently pathetic beyond losing lots of games. Trying to hire a new DC for a couple of seasons doesn't inspire me. Sorry.

So we should have stayed pat then... Not made any changes even after having the second worst Def in football?

My thoughts as well. Either 1) he'll chill as a highly paid position coach or 2) this is a way of showing him the door and encouraging him to look for a DC position elsewhere so we won't be on the hook for his payout.

If it's 1), you gotta question whether he'll be motivated to put in the effort after a demotion. So 2) is a high possibility.

One small tidbit...

I got a call from a Gold Standard rep last week asking why I hadn't renewed my tickets yet. I'm hardly a high-roller (I had 2 New Alumni seats last year), so I was surprised to get the call.

I gave the standard answer: I haven't decided yet, but I was very unhappy with the 1-11 season and the lack of visible changes. I said I was hoping for some sign that they were moving forward, and that I was especially looking at the DC position.

He tried to redirect and blame it on injuries, but I replied that I still thought the coaching was problematic. He explained the early renewal deadline, thanked me for my time, and hung up.

With the announcement happening now, without also announcing a new DC, I have to wonder if a partial goal is to get on-the-fence people like me to buy 2014 tickets.

Buh should have been demoted mid season...

When he admitted to not being able to handle the PSU formations and plays.

I think that was (regardless of timing) his point

Not if the new DC shows promise and is a plausible candidate for the head coaching job. Happens all the time.

Sonny does "x".

Buh seems like a really straight up guy. Remember he was seen on The Drive saying "I'm sorry" to Sonny which Sonny immediately dismissed that kind of talk. I can picture Buh feeling sheepish about his season and allowing Sonny to make a personnel move on him. If that's the case, I have respect for the guy.

If everyone was on twitter, Okaydo wouldn't feel the need to post every tweet that catches his eye. Why would you deprive him of that?

In all seriousness I am on twitter and follow some industry people but almost no sports figures and rarely spend any time reviewing my feed because it's like a firehose, and not in a good way.

I'm surprised that Sacks was fired and not Cachere. The DT position was the best group on defense IMO. DE's were terrible, no pass rush and never set the edge on outside runs.

Chachere has worked with Dykes before.

What's even odder is that Chachere's background is coaching TE/ST/RB/WR/LB/DB and from what I can tell the first time he ever coached D-Line is here at Cal. Why in the world did we hire him for it?
