No one who is any good will take this position bc Dykes is gone in 1-2 years. Too risky. Plus, you can't coach/play defense when the defense is on the field for 40 minutes a game.
When Dykes was hired, there were rumors that DeWayne Walker was in-line to be his DC.
He just spent the last year as the DB coach for Jacksonville. Coincidence? Probably, but I'll throw his name out there anyway.

I would be happy with Walker. Hell of a recruiter. Did pretty well at UCLA as I recall and left to be a head coach of a terrible program.

yeah, probably not over Auburn. Could have gotten him if Auburn wasn't looking. The guy was at a shitty school and no one else was giving him a look...

I would think Walker might actually want the job. He knows California and can recruit. His NFL experience will be a plus since I don't believe we currently have any coaches on this staff with any NFL experience. Coached for Carroll at USC and then obviously the DC at UCLA. He had some very good defenses at UCLA if I recall correctly.
Him and Dykes seem to be familiar with each other, as well. All things considered I would be happy with Walker.

A DC who knows he's good and has HC aspirations would jump at the job, for all the reasons you just mentioned. Look how close Ed O came to getting the HC at USC.
As for your theory about the defense being on the field a long time, ask Nick Aliotti if it's possible to be a good DC with the D on the field a long time. He's got some time now after retiring with glory, maybe he can explain it to you.

The Diaz rose is tarnished, I would stay away. English, Walker... those would make sense. Not sure that Shannon is a West Coast kind of guy but he'd be good too

Nope. He knew he'd be able to pick his job of choice in the next couple of years while at Arkansas St. Plus, he was a HS coach in Arkansas for a long time, he knew the area and liked it.

As far as I'm concerned, Randy Shannon, Walker, or Ron English would all be absolute home runs. The fact that Walker is from LA and is such a good recruiter, he would be at the top of my personal list, but really - if any of those three wanted to come to Cal, I would do backflips.

Not sure if this was said in jest or not, but that guy who is the Carolina HC, I just spoke with his secretary, apparently his calendar is too full to do an interview with Dykes this week.
Remember when we did this last time? Look what we got..and now HE (and she) get to pick again???? I got tired of all the HC speculation and then saw what we got..this is even worse..

Shoulda stayed with Buh so that you could be happier. Agreed.
Walker is my first choice (and was my first choice from the beginning), but I don't see Walker coming here.
English is my second choice. He's probably a miserable HC, but he was a very good DC while at Michigan. I think he'd be a nice fit and he's definitely available.
