Going winless in '99? I guess that is technically correct.

I thought this was a well-reasoned analysis and not just piling on.

Geezus. What could be worse . . .

Let's pretend I never said that. The spiral seems to keep going down further just when I think it can't get worse. THAT would be bottom.

Very fair assessment unfortunately.

"But if you're a Cal fan, there's not much to feel good about when you look at 2013. Grade: F"

The only thing on the internet that could accurately give a recap on the season is an obscene Shaggy Bevo thread.

Have we hit rock bottom yet?

NO!

As long as Buh is still coaching the LBs we haven't hit rock bottom. Ask yourself why we've lost more LBs to various defections than any other position.

Yup. Not even a soft F. Very deserved hard F.

Wisconsin had one of the top defenses in 2012 when Buh was LB coach. From what I recall, Bielema was also planning to bring him to Arkansas for a good amount of coin. He clearly can't coordinate a defense, but I wouldn't discount Buh's ability to develop LBs if he has no other responsibilities. It's just sad that we have to pay him $500k a year for that sole task.

An F seems a bit generous. I have never given a student an F- before. But I think it is warranted in this case.

I really think that what coaches do at other schools can't be directly applied to the coaching conditions at Cal. I'm probably the only one who thinks this. I agree that it is reasonable to think Buh can coach LBs and I suppose I am willing to give him a mulligan. But the quality of play at LB last year was the biggest disappointment for me amongst a sea of disappointments and I don't think it was because Buh was distracted.

You are much better informed than me, how much of this was due to "free-lancing" by our LB crew vs scheme based mistakes?

I agree with the overall grade of F

However I'd give the special teams a C+ or B- (not a C-). As pointed out, FG/Extra Points was pretty good, and coverage was average.

Although we KO and Punt returning was not a weapon, it didn't have any major breakdowns either

Offense might be a little harsh too...I don't think they deserve the D- but being the lowest scoring offense in the league means they shouldn't get a much higher grade either.

Buh's choice of who to play is questionable. Barton should have been playing more. Jefferson regressed from the year before and Fortt regressed during the year. Gibson was not returned to LB even though he was not being used at DB and there was a need at LB after there were injuries there.

Some of the play could be on the players because they seemed to play at half speed at times and did not finish tackles.

Talked to some Furd alums, including a player that was coached by Buh..they all felt he was a good LB coach, definitely not DC material..

I think if you really break it down, much of LB play is impacted by the front four/three, no question we were anemic in quality DL play this year. That said, no question that youth and inexperience was also a factor with our LBS..
