Is this ethical? Cool with Sandy and/or the fans?

I personally think he should cool it with the cross-marketing of Cal and his seminar.

I agree. It's great for Cal.

Looking forward to #BearRaid 2.0

Clicked on this story at the same website. I guess a lot of folks were drinking the Koolaid back then.

I would only take issue with our OC inviting high school coaches to our Spring Ball if our offense was underperforming, which it was.

I don't see this as the horrible thing that other BI'ers seem to but, given last season's results, it's not a good thing either. I'm not sure what the solution is because it is a great networking tool with coaches .

When you're not coaching well you can't really do anything right

Leach has finally got Wazzu believing, so the closest to his "system," is "Dykes TFS," so it will happen here, too. Patience, patience.

It helps with recruiting. Players playing under TFS will likely commit to us. See Rubenzer.

Notice that this is going through the Cal Athletic Department (the site says to call Cal to schedule a visit).

Winning solves everything. If SD and TF can crank it up and actually have a winning season (like soon), I'm cool with all the cross promotion. However if there's no winning, yeah it looks like the epitome of chumpsterism and slacking/cheating on your main job.

I look at this way, many Cal profs have consulting businesses on the side. It works if the work is related and the prof does his job, takes care of all duties at Cal. That usually means continue research and publishing and teach your classes. For a OC, this means WINNING, grooming talent, recruiting, kicking butt.

Of course there is the caveat of pay rate. Given how much TF is being paid, if he was under my employ, I'd say knock off the side business until the main business is taken care of and fixed.

i dont have much of a problem with him inviting high school coaches out as our practices are open anyway. but i agree i hate seeing the Cal emblem on his site using it to sell his system.

I don't have a problem inviting high school coaches to practice, I think Tedford did that too, to help establish relationships with coaches. But he should not sell his system at practice, or require people buy it to attend practice, or use a Cal emblem on his on stuff, unless he is actually giving some of the proceeds to Cal.

I just fully checked out the TF System website for the first time. It doesn't have nearly the amount of Cal Logo / supposed Cal endorsements that I was led to believe based upon the groveling on this board.

Edited to add, I agree with Okaydo, his website is ugly and dated

Did they at least take off Yenser's testimonial from his website?
Agree this is a conflict, he's obviously not giving his full attention to being OC, his time and energy is being diverted to TFS.

Except that winning is not in any coaches contract as a basis to get paid.

I would guess that our AD let them put it in the contract for this guy to use Cal for any marketing he wants with tTFS, so that we could, you know, secure his awesomeness.

Not kidding. I would venture that this was all discussed and written down before he signed the line.

Doing well excuses a lot of things; true of ANY job.

I am relatively good at my job. So I get all the diet coke I want. No one even questions it.

Now we know why practices are open to the public. Perhaps we could take a percentage of revenue to help us pay for our next DC.

Personally, I think this is a good thing. I hope every high school and JC coach in the state of California (plus neighboring states, Texas and Hawaii) attend and form a close bond with the staff and speak well of us with their best players, all of whom will be groomed in the TFS.

Agree its a good thing. It only rubs me wrong since we are so dang crappy right now.

This is a perfect avenue for meeting coaches and recruits, develpoing pipelines, etc.

What I don't like is that we are seemingly limiting our exposure to high schools that run his system. There will undoubtedly be good players that don't play in tFS system. And I don't want to miss out on them because tony is busy pimpn his system out.

And of course there is the oft mentioned line of please try and focus more on CAL and less on your tFS.

Yeah we sure didn't surprise anyone all year with anything except for the fake FG whereas we looked surprised every game. But hey we have open practices so it's all good, much better than winning with closed practices.

If Franklin is out there teaching everyone he can reach about his fantastic system, isn't he giving out info on how to stop it too? I mean, if a convict told everyone how he was going to rob banks, he would have a very short career.

You want to build relationships with hs coaches, then put on long weekend seminars for free. Feed them three meals a day - have one seminar each for O,D, and ST.

Go over drills, strategies, schemes, stunts, blitzing - run, pass and otherwise. - how to block them etc. When the day is over invite them to bring film and watch their kids, their teams, and answer every question as best you can till dawn if necessary. But why would we do this when we could pick up extra cash doing thousand dollar seminars? Because it is what is best for Cal football and going the extra mile or twenty will not hurt Cal Football.

Distinguish yourself from the competition in a good way. Or continue to act like Tarleton St. - you think making cash on the side through something like TFS is new? Or impressive? It reeks of the medicine man rolling into town.

Year(s) from now people will look back on this and realize how ridiculous it was. We are basically paying a couple people to run our program into the ground and use our facilities while they're at it. It's laughable.

Hopefully, not with the fans, so long as our offense is performing so poorly. With respect to Sandy, she is completely clueless, so I'm not surprised that she just turns her head the other way. She is just totally incompetent and is not qualified to be athletic director at a major university.

Really good way to network with high school coaches to send recruits already versed in TFS to Cal

Has she ever addressed the apparent conflict of interest? Between the abyssmal grad rates which occurred on her watch and the worst Cal Football team ever (at least tied) why has she not gotten more heat? She does seem clueless but there has just got to be more to the story.

Right. How can anyone defend hiring Mike Montgomery, Lindsey Gottleib, Tara McKeever, and other world class coaches, standing up to the most hostile faculty of any major athletic program in the country, getting Memorial Stadium done despite costs zooming from groundless lawsuits and tree sitters, pushing baseball into actually actively raising money to support itself while improving the stadium, and many other such things, all without Phil Knight or some other big checkbook (Stanford) and with actual academic requirements. Is SD the right guy? Doubtful, but still an open question. We needed a house cleaning, we're getting one. May not work out at all. But she's "totally incompetent and is not qualified to be athletic director at a major u"? Come on, get a grip.

And how long does Cal get branded as "the TFS school?" Maybe one more year with Sonny & Co? Then how "cool" do these camps look? I agree, run the camps for free..bring in all the coaches..but make it "Cal" first, just like coaches and players bought into the Delaware Wing T..This smells like moonlighting and a big conflict of interest.
