Sorry, had to ask. Otherwise try to limit tweeting with a 18 year old.

This is awesome.

I'm always cautious about heralding a player as a new coach because not all players can coach, but in this case, Jahvid truly is one of the good guys with no blemishes at all....I hope he succeeds and is as dynamic a coach as he was a runner....

Welcome back Jahvid! It is also being reported that he is coming back to finish his degree, so more good news.

This is awesome. One of my favorite Bears of all time and a good guy. Great rep for the Cal Bears! Now let's see if he can flip Mixon!

Can GA's actively recruit? But what a great mentor he'll be!

Fantastic. And he's getting his degree? He embodies why the Cal degree is in fact very important. Great add Coach Dykes.

Wow I think he's also a walking talking cautionary tale. And in this day and age these kids need to hear it and see it from a "peer". Jhavid is peerless as a Cal runner.
Go Bears!!

Amazing news! Although he won't be able to recruit as a GA, it would be great having such an true Bear back in our camp! First replacing our unqualified DC and now bringing Best. I'm slowly moving over to the side of hopeful again.

Under NCAA rules, graduate assistants are paid an amount equal to a school's full grant-in-aid. G.A.s must be full-time students in grad school.

As for coaching duties, grad assistants can be like full-time coaches, but they aren't permitted to contact or evaluate recruits off campus. G.A.s can phone prospects, though.

We've had some amazing backs and Best was one of the most exciting to watch. He also had a tremendous work ethic which I hope rubs off on the guys.

He won't be able to recruit, but he will be able to share his story to those who come to campus. "No matter how great you are, you can find yourself unemployed in an instant. What then?"

He can recruit on campus and over the phone I believe, he just can't travel to recruit off campus....someone correct me if I'm wrong but I looked it up and they just have to be on a grad program in good standing. The can do everything else a coach does but recruit away from the school.

Interesting.

I love Jahvid and he was an amazing back. It's great to have him back at Cal.

With that said, we'll have to see if he makes a difference with Ingram and our OL. Great to have his support but i question whether we'll see a difference on the field.

Think just can't recruit off campus, but he can contact recruits on campus, which will still be a good thing.

A lot of football is just mental toughness... Even if he doesn't have the coaching ability his work ethic and NFL experience alone will be a huge help

In addition to being full-time students, GAs are essentially like slaves, who work looong hours.

Here's an article on GA Kevin Daft, and his 7 am to 1 am daily schedule. It's a grind.
http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/pac10/2004-11-18-cal-ga-side_x.htm

So, no way are Tony Gonzalez and Nnamdi going to work that hard as gophers.

Nnamdi -- let's repeat this again! -- has a baby coming and his wife works insane hours already in Los Angeles. So, no, he's not going to neglect his new child and wife.

Tony is retiring from the daily grind. Being a GA would be another daily grind.

Tony is currently deciding which NFL pregame show he should join -- if he joins one at all. (Either CBS or Fox Sports1, but he doesn't want to bump his friend Shannon Sharpe, or so I've read....Fox NFL Sunday would be perfect for him, but that show is kicking CBS' butt, and Fox doesn't want to mess with the chemistry, or so I've read.)

Jahvid left after his junior year. If he is a GA, that means he must have finished his BA at some point after retiring from the NFL. If so, that is awesome!

I think it is more likely Jahvid will be an "Undergraduate Assistant Coach" which is much the same, except he will receive a scholarship to finish his Cal degree. He can coach on the field, but cannot recruit off campus (or make phone calls to recruits).
