Akina would be huge.

I can see the headline, now: "DBU guy heads to Cal!"

There are just as many people underwhelmed by Robinson. I think no matter who it is 50% will be unhappy, 50% will be happy but complain it wasn't early enough, and 50% will complain about it not being enough.

Hard to please anyone these days.

The program is in the dumps right now and Sonny dug himself into a pretty deep hole. It's going to take more than just a hire to get him out. Let's see some results on the field before we start backslapping each other.

It's not expecting a top 25 D with a new coaching staff. It's getting something below average instead of being basically the worst in college football

Akina maybe could've avoided the constant beat by the deep ball on the second snap of the series we saw with stewart

Of course, I agree. A DC matters, and the goal should always be to upgrade coaching personnel when necessary.

But we have pretty much the same D coming back. But if we get no impact JC/frosh recruits to this year, we are still the worst D in the Pac. I hope coaching can minimize our flaws and maximize our strengths (what is our strength on D -- take your time on that one) but anyone who saw our talent on D soberly knows we have a personnel problem - Buh and an incompetent staff exacerbated it.

Poke fun all you want, but please offer up a line of reasoning for Cal's D talent being "respectable" and how merely a different, better coach can make this group something other than a bottom of the conference D. Of course, this was Tedfords doing that Dykes has to deal with. It will take 2 more years, and that's assuming he has a great class this year and next. A bad recruiting cycle puts you back 3-5 years. We are in the middle right now I'd say.

Absolutely did not have any impact D players. But still should not have been the last D in the PAC. Johnson and Kelly and hopefully Scarlett and jalil up front hopefully are an upgrade. A better coached secondary. And then maybe we have the 6-8 range D in the PAC.

Yeah Kaufman....

Do you honestly believe Cal had the kind of personnel they had. Half our unit should not have seen the field, let alone start or get considerable minutes. Good coaching would have made us more like 100 out of 120, rather than 2nd to last

They make a great deal of impact on the DBs.
How much impact to DBs make on the game? Watch the NFC championship game tomorrow. If you miss it, watch every Cal game last year on replay.

No offense, but I think saying that even the best coach ever could have made our injury ridden, 3rd string D 6th or 8th in the Pac means you either didn't watch any games last year, or in complete denial about the quality/depth of our roster, or is smoking the hippie lettuce

well if we get avery, forbes, scarlett and jalil all back healthy, id say that we have respectable talent. if mcclure can also come back and play like did before his knee injury thatd help alot too. walker wasnt terrible last year. we have 4 jc recruits and sina where we need to see if they can make an impact. theres sufficient talent there with some actual luck on the injury front

Would you really rate wazzu OSU Colorado D even when we were injured talent wise better? I'm sorry. I would not. Probably AZ as a whole as well in that pot

akina is well respected in the coaching community. coaching makes a huge difference in player development and would for us considering that we have a lot of young dbs

There is no miracle cure or quick fix for sure. Great coaching, good luck and relatively few injuries and we can hope for a middling D that still will be bottom third in the Pac. I'd take that. Our D last year was historically pathetic.
wanderlust
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I probably would (and they were awful too, so don't see your point) because I don't think they were playing their 3rd string walk ons or true frosh that had no business playing yet.

I'm not arguing Bug wasn't part of the problem - or that we shouldn't bother fixing that. But please behonest and realistic about where we stand talent wise, relative to conference offenses. I'm rooting most for an influx in solid, savvy recruits more than getting the "best" DC however you measure that and whatever that means. But yes, we should try and improve both. Both matter.

That's pretty much where I'm at as well. A D that makes our 2nd halves matter

Maybe this will cheer you up (or maybe you'd just rather complain like most people here):

From Wikipedia on Art Kaufman:

Kaufman inherited a Red Raider defense ranked 114 out of 120 in total defense, and last in the country in rushing defense.[8] In the opening game of the 2012 season against the Northwestern State Demons, Kaufman's defense set a school record of only 84 yards allowed.[9] After the third game versus the New Mexico Lobos, the Red Raiders were 2nd in total defense in the country.[10] Following a bye the week of September 22, the Red Raiders rose to number 1 in total defense.[11] The Red Raiders maintained their number 1 ranking after a Week 5 defeat of their first Big 12 conference opponent, the Iowa State Cyclones. Kaufman's defense held the Cyclones to 189 yards of total offense.[12] Following this performance, Kaufman was named by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram as the frontrunner for the Broyles Award.[13]

After a loss at home to the 14th ranked Oklahoma Sooners and an upset victory over 5th ranked West Virginia Mountaineers, Kaufman's defense ranked 4th in total yards allowed.[14] In the upset victory over West Virginia, the Red Raiders held Heisman Trophy-frontrunner Geno Smith to 275 yards, a passing efficiency rating of 100.71, and one touchdown pass.[15] The win marked the most lopsided victory over a top-5 opponent in school history, and marked the debut of the Red Raiders in the BCS rankings at number 17. Kaufman was again praised for the performance of the defense, with Bruce Feldman of CBS Sports also naming him as the frontrunner for the Broyles Award.[16]

Thank you, Churchill. The current Cal program is entirely comparable to the WW2. It's not like you can actually hire a new coach or anything.
