Hooray. If this is combined with the hiring of Akina, I would be stoked. We have lots of young DBs that could really turn into solid defenders with proper technique. To see a D that may provide some resistance is something that gives me hope. Now the offense of course has to do its part too (tTFS pls forget about stats - give us efficiency). We just can't have those 4-5 three and out drives in a row to start seemingly all our games. The game is over right there.

why only a one year hire? Oh right because you think if he has a good year he will leave. Even though a good year by him means a good year by us and a good year by us means we are moving up. We are a top job in a good area.

I didn't say it was a bad hire, just that Sonny should be prepared so we aren't left scrambling. Given he's had two one-year stops in a row I don't see why we are so special that he's going to stick around here in the likely case a better school offers.

Well he was fired from his last job so it wasn't like he was picking and choosing. And he just went with Tuberville to Cincy from Texas Tech. So his last two moves weren't as a result him looking to bolt.

He wasn't retained by the new staff at Cincy (not really 'fired'), right? Still, it's a good point that it wasn't his decision. So, fair point, I guess I am being cynical with bad info.

Not quite. He followed Tuberville from Texas Tech to Cincy but after a year, Tuberville dropped him for reason that aren't clear (and seem to be unrelated to the teqm's defensive performance).

I would definitely not call it a firing. His performance was quite good. A lot of times coaches just want to clean house and bring in a new staff.

He was hired by Tuberville at TT... Tuberville went to Cincy and he took Kaufman with him which is pretty standard for a HC to do if he has a good DC. He only left TT for Cincy because the HC left. Before that he was with North Carolina where he was there until they had a HC change and that person brought in his own guy. He hasn't been job jumping.

We've never given coordinators significant pay increases because JT would burn through them like crack. If the D makes significant progress and we win accordingly, it really isn't crazy to believe that he gets a bump. Considering how loyal to "his guys" Sonny seems to be, I can't imagine he wouldn't figure out a way to limit staff turnover via increased money.

I want to see his contract; I hope we didn't give him a three year deal as with Buh. That was a lot of money down the rat hole.

fallcamp, i don't believe a multi-year deal for Kaufman is unrealistic or un-savvy. Kaufman comes from a place of extensive experience and tangible results. if there is someone you would give a multi-year contract to, imo, it would be a guy like Kaufman.

the mistake was giving a nobody like Buh such a fantastic deal.

True. That's what he said but there's gotta be more to it. Why dump a coach that oversaw such marked performance improvement? I could be wrong but I'd think there was some sort of personal falling-out with Tuberville, which isn't a red flag to me because Tuberville seems like a real A-hole.
