Huh?

I just wish that Kaufman was the guy we gave a three year to last year.

lol, i'm just glad we signed Kaufman.

i can totally imagine Sandy messing it overcorrecting, saying "hmm, BI wasn't happy about 3-year guaranteed contracts... Sorry, Art, you're getting a 1-year deal only," and thus screwing us out of any legit candidates.

If the D makes significant progress and we win accordingly, it really isn't crazy to believe that he gets a bump. Considering how loyal to "his guys" Sonny seems to be, I can't imagine he wouldn't figure out a way to limit staff turnover via increased money.

very true, unless we give them the money to start with (like with Buh). there is also a big check coming from the new BCS/Rose Bowl in spring 2015. And maybe some p12 network money if the startup costs are paid off.

Almost every other major CFB team will also be receiving similar money, so if we don't actually spend some of it on football, we will fall behind because others will be.

The reason was clear. Tuberville said it was about recruiting.

Tuberville is a Tuberville.

But we did get a legit DC...(and I get what you are saying... overcorrecting would have been bad in this case, you might as well keep Buh at that point with the tenuous ground the entire staff is on). Every sports agent out there knows what Buh got. So yeah, Cal can come back and say $500k was just the yearly budget, which very well might be true. But by every metric kauffman is a stronger hire than Buh was.

I think it would be better for both parties to have a $650k contract for 2 years than $500k for three years...obviously those aren't real numbers, but to say it for the 1000x time on this board, the bug contract was surprising because of the raise over clancy AND the guarantee. I'm all for paying a higher rate than 'market' but with less guaranteed years since turnover is definitely a cost of doing business in this game.

Based on his history, he looks like the guy we need now but may not be around in 3 years. I'll be happy if he can turn things around. Generally he doesn't seem like a long term kind of guy given the way he's gone from school to school.

True. That's what he said but there's gotta be more to it. Why dump a coach that oversaw such marked performance improvement? I could be wrong but I'd think there was some sort of personal falling-out with Tuberville, which isn't a red flag to me because Tuberville seems like a real A-hole.

Well, we did see Tommy take a swipe at him on the sidelines with players looking on. Might have been the last straw.

That was Assistant Kevin Oliver, not the Kauffer.

Yeah I would think there is a little more to it then recruiting, especially since he was partially replaced at Cincinnati by Hank Hughes out of UConn who has pretty much no Midwest experience. Theres a lot of Banter in the Cininciati forums wondering why he was let go, I don't think many of them think it was based on recruiting either. Regardless though, I doubt there are any big issues probably just Tubervilles strong personality and I like the hire.

Actually, that was a graduate assistant that got whacked, not even a full-time salaried assistant.

I think your correct Colorado, better two than three years. Plus, if Dykes gets fired after next season, then Cal will only owe the DC, Tedford, and Franklin a years pay along with Dykes' three. I hope this isn't the case because it's getting very expensive. This would be the worst case scenario, but after this year, I hope lightening doesn't strike twice.

We still have to pay Tedford even though he is the OC for Tampa Bay?... Thought once he had a job we were off the hook.

Nope. His pay only mitigates our obligation, but it's capped at the first $150k, and then any amount above $500k I believe. It's been a while since I looked at it, but I'm pretty sure that's the deal.

It's technically: we get half of the first $300K per year ($150K). Then we get half of anything above $1.5M per year (not likely it would seem). So we're going to be saving $150K per year on his 2014 and 2015 salary (sounds like both are lump sump by April of each year). Tedford will still make $1.8M (2014) and $1.95M (2015) (original contract was $2.3M per year). So total payment while working for the Bucs under settlement is $2.75M - $.3M = $2.45M.
