well i disagree that we're getting whoever we want and need. miller and the other jc OT were our first choices. granado was a plan b guy. leniu wasnt our first choice, calhoun was. pickett was our first choice cb, we got white. harvey was our preference at wr and we got brown. its not to say that these guys we got arent arguably better, but i dont think your statement is accurate

i agree with you re: OL.

Leniu is definitely not a plan B type, he just didn't have the hype/name coming into the recruiting cycle. but yes, we missed on all our other Plan A/B LB targets.

We got the better end of the Harvey for Brown WR trade. Brown is everything Harvey is, plus better grades.

Don't mistake first offer with preference. They'd much rather have Brown and Leniu than Harvey and Calhoun and they're much better academically, too.

Both guys committed early so that has something to do it, too.

We only lose 2 OL in Tags and Tyndall. We return 4 FR OT who red shirted last year. We are bring in a center, OG, and JC OT... lose two add 3...

As for LB we lose 4 and we will get 4. Watch for us to close with 3 more LBs before we are done.

Four linebackers??? Which four do you think we end up with?

If we are lucky, Noah Westfield, Chandler Leniu, Nifae Lealao, Asiea Tongilava.

We have at least three four-star LB recruits scheduled to visit this weekend. Plus the LB (SJSU decommit) who visited last weekend and who's currently very high on Cal.

both Marquis Ware and Jamardre Cobb will not visit CAL and re committed to ARZ guess they did not care for the Kaufman hire ...

sonny and art are on the road making home visits so when feb 5 comes we will see

They cancelled their visits before Art was announced, but nice try.

lol those 2 were not coming to Cal no matter who got hired.
MoragaBear

They were a package deal with their cousin Rodney Carr and all aren't the strongest of students. Cal's gone down that path before and we all know how that worked out.

Cal's already got great relationships lined up with guys they like a lot as well as Downs on campus already and he's most likely to play LB, though he's still considering giving RB a shot.

The DC hire had zero to do with this. I let people know in chat last night they wouldn't be coming.

Immediate playing time is always a selling point to players. That's the upside of having a bad team in the prior season.

New recruits not only see that we were bad last year on D, but we had a lot of injuries...this is what points to immediate playing time for them and that they can be a part of a tremendously improved D next year.

What was expected? We're ranked #9 in the Pac and #54 overall. In the Pac we're ahead of WSU, Washington (who has 1 less 4-star) and Colorado.

As long as we keep Brown, Farmer and Watson we shouldn't fall any further. Any other 4 stars in play?

Top-3 won't happen unless we add at least 3 more 4-star commits based on the current ranking.

That's beating the expectation, baby!

lol top 3 is not even a remote possibility. it's going to Furd LA and $C in the topgroup, then probably Oregon.

the class is actually if rbz pans out shockingly good. No. Not by any definition a top 3, but something that SD can work with (assuming SD IS the man)

assuming rbz pans out we got a qb for the future (think of how many qb recruits actually pan out.)

Watson and Enwere are as good a rb duo as any program gets. I take Watson over Mixon any day of the week yeah that's heresy but the #s don't lie and Watson did that against top LA competition. He's a gamer, Enwere is a beast and Vickers is in play as well.

Brown, Davis and maybe Fields for WR. That's awesome too.

The DL class IF they close Griffin and Lealaowe would take that any year let alone coming off of 1-11.

LB of Downs, Leniu, Tongilava +/- westerfield/weber/cook or whomever is ok. certainly decent.

Safety is good Farmer, Tartabull and Atoe.that's a SOLID group

CB if they flip culver would be really solid too. No it's not wadood and pickett, but.

OLthis one hit a need with Granado, but that was certainly plan C or D. Trani is solid pickup for the future. Bennett seems like he's got project written all over him and we didn't (as of yet) get a hs OT stud/project or otherwise. This may be where the 1-11 hurt us ALTHOUGH this isn't as critical a short term need given we actually have A LOT of returning OL.

I'm responding to you moonpod, but it's an open question. Did we have any early entrants this year that we can check off and stop worrying about? With all the departures, is it looking like we are going to have a full 25 member class?

We had five spring enrollments - 4 JC (Atoe, Davis, Johnson, Kelly) and 1 High School (Downs).

It's not that shocking. It's a mediocre class by every rating service.
However, due to the fact that we are a Pac-12 school, with a coach who is still new, we are going to be the 2nd and 3rd choice of many players who didn't get offered by the most exciting programs. Those players aren't terrible, and a few may even turn out to be stars if coached well. That's why a program can turn around quickly, because mediocre recruits can play well by the time they're juniors and seniors if and only if they are coached and trained well.

it just amazes me how every year we're able to get all of the underrated recruits deserving of more stars. Amazing !

Lots of pumping on this thread for a class SCOUT ranks as having only 1 four star recruit.

But then again, they ALWAYS underrate OUR commits, right?

I don't except much coming off a 1 win season and a coach on the hot seat. But, c'mon, this is not a great or even good class. It's pretty mediocre.

You base this on what insight? Your scan of the precise, scientific rating on Scout? Your stay at Holiday Inn? You're amazed that some people may have their own independent assessment and not just blindly count the number of stars on Scout? You know, maybe you do have a point. All those recruits rated four/five stars during 2009-2011 brought us such great results the last two years. Scout is infallible. Chris Harper was truly only the 83rd best WR coming out of his class.

I agree with you that most of the "insight" on this board is only blind leading the blind. However, none of us (including me and including you) should pretend that we have any real vision or mock others for being blind. In particular, none of us posters should categorize our recruits as mediocre, especially when such assessment is coming from a place of complete ignorance.

You did see the year Rubenzer had right? Top 10 in the elite 11, one of the top players at the Opening, huge stats, Arizona player of the year, Arizona state champ, MVP of a HS all star game, etc. If he isn't a 4 star I don't know who is. 61 TDs to 3 Ints this year and 130 TD to 13 Int for his HS career and that doesn't even touch his back to back over 1000 yard rushing seasons with 10 TDs in each.

Same with Tre Watson who should be an easy 4 star recruit after a monster season where he rushed for 50TDs playing a very tough schedule. Hell even Rivals finally bumped him to a 4 star.

Besides those two who are the obviously ridiculous misses the only other guy who is a legit 4 star without question to me is Army All American Downs, but I won't complain because he was hurt and missed all year so the drop makes sense. You can make an argument about Koa Farmer and Vic Enewere also, but if Watson isn't a 4 star how can any other 3 star player complain. Everyone else is about right at 3 stars.
