At first glance, this is an excellent hire. Looks like our best position coach or at least one with the most proven track record.

I can't believe how often this happens on this forum... Do people really not look at dates on articles? I'll let this one slide, as it's almost 2 years to the day and at quick glance you could think it was an article from yesterday, but come on...

My bad... it is the second link in Google. Higher up than his hire at UMass...

I don't mind be the butt of a joke if it is Burns.

UMass Bio:
The 2013 season will mark Burns' 17th as a football coach, with stops at Purdue, Arizona State, Kansas State, USC, Louisville and in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to his credit. He has coached in 10 bowl games, including four BCS Bowls, and was part of USC's back-to-back National Championship-winning coaching staff in 2003 and 2004.

Last season with Purdue, three of the Boilermakers' five players named to Big 10 All-Conference teams came from Burns' secondary. During his tenure, he has coached notables such as Troy Polamalu, Darnel Bing, Antonio Roundtree and Ronde Barber.

Burns joined the Purdue staff after spending the previous four seasons (2008-11) as the cornerbacks coach at Arizona State. The Sun Devils led the then-Pac-10 and finished among the nation's top units in rushing, passing and total defense in 2009.

Burns has found success at many levels during his coaching career, spending 2006 as the defensive backs coach of the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers after coaching the secondary at USC under Pete Carroll for four years (2002-05). Burns also coached for four seasons at Louisville (1998-2001) as well as one season at Idaho (1997).

During his time at Southern California, Burns developed a reputation as one of the brightest young secondary coaches in the country and mentored a number of stand-out performers, including All-American safeties Troy Polamalu (2002) and Darnell Bing (2005). He also coached first-team All-Pacific-10 Conference cornerback Will Poole in 2003. Burns also produced six All-Conference USA cornerbacks during his tenure at Louisville, including first-teamers Anthony Floyd (2000 and 2001) and Antonio Roundtree (1998). Burns also coached All-Pro cornerback Ronde Barber while with the Buccaneers.

Burns was a four-year letterwinner (1991-93, 1995) at Washington State, earning honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors in 1992. He earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from Washington State in 1995 and his master's from Washington State in 1997.

He and his wife Crystal have three sons, Cristopher, Carter and Cooper.

I like his USC experience under Pete Carrol (with Pete being a former DB coach, Burns either was carried by Pete or learned from a great mentor and has become great himself) and his NFL experience. However, his career doesn't have a logical progression and seems to be up and down. Strange, but doesn't fill me with disappointment. I remain vaguely optimistic.

Serious question: Why does it seem like his career peaked in Tampa Bay and then progressed downwards afterward?

Apparently none of the above posters have considered whether the move to Cal would be considered by others as an 'up' or 'down' move for him. [OMG, how sad, he went to Cal...Seriously folks, are we all so down in the dumps that we automatically dis anyone who would come to Cal to coach???] Ignoring the up/down silliness, let's be glad that he has experience and has some coaching 'results' to show for it. I like that. Whether he 'fits' with whatever culture it is that our coaching staff (and new DC) are establishing, is of course something we can't know. I suspect our new DC had a lot to do with this hire as he builds his own staff and that he did well in finding and securing such an experienced hand this late in the game.

UMass also went 1-11 in 2012, so let's maybe not read too much into the quality of DB coaching in 2013. UMass scored a touchdown or fewer five times in 2013. They were just a shitty overall team.

Sounds familiar. It begs the question why Mr. Burns is applying for a gig there then. I guess the same can be said for us. But at least we have shiny new facilities.

In regards to the coach from Texas, the coach was indeed supposed to be Manny Diaz...the deal was a done deal, ianbearnson was correct on that until last minute MD took the LT job. That's why it's taken so long.

regardless -- this is a better hire imo.

Can't be. We all KNOW that no decent coach would take the job at Cal since SD is "incompetent". Ergo, the new guy can't be any good. Right?:sarc:

Akina was just a juke move? My ankles feel broken. Between Manny and Greg, I am glad we got Greg. Between Akina and Greg, I am a bit more torn. In either case, I am hopeful.

Yes but their pass defense was actually somewhat respectable at 41st in the nation...their offense and run defense were abysmal.

I thought Akina was the Texas guy for DB coach. Diaz and Robinson were names in the DC mix at some point? I have no idea.
