The scene a few weeks ago where MattM is undercover in the drug house and the cops are coming and the bullets flying was a masterpiece of film making.

The chick from last night's episode was a masterpiece.

2 things: She wasn't alive when Cheers was on the air. (Born 2 months after the series finale).

On the day Woody Harrelson celebrated his 32nd birthday, she was born.

True. This show has seriously ramped up trailer trash skanks to stratospheric heights. If the Downton Abbey girls put out like that, someone might watch it.

That advice should be given to our most heinous repeat-offender criminals: It'd save the taxpayers a lot of money. Oh! I can't believe I just wrote that! Please don't tell anybody I wrote that!

How is this series going to end up in two weeks? Rust and Marty team up together again and find the Yellow King somewhere in the Tuttle Empire? Sounds almost too predictable.

BTW, I swear I didn't steal this off a website somewhere. but if it turns out that Marty's ex got pregnant from her hook-up with Cohle and produced him a daughter to replace the one he lost, well, then, you heard it here first. (Waaaay too schmaltzy for this series, though.)

Are we sure this isn't just his advice for Cal football fans?

This show is awesome so far -- can't wait to see where they take it.

Also, Marty's first mistress was hotter.

Yes, Alessandra "The president has seen my boobs" Daddario is very, very hot. I think last night's chick was more stunning.

I just got done watching last weeks episode so I won't read any of the posts until next week. Man, has MM turned into a big time actor or what? Some of his latest work is nothing short of awesome.

Now that busy people have had a week to watch the finale at their leisure...

I thought the finale was good, but fell short in some places. Still, an A+ series, all in all.

I think that in many cases people's expectations and wacky theories had gone so far that the finale was only going to fail to live up to them. Personally, I was satisfied. I liked that the final episode reinforced that the show was really about the two detectives and the changes to their worldviews rather than any kind of crazy plot twists or mystical subtext.

My only criticism is that I don't know if it was really that important to see so much of the killer's home life. It was still compelling, but in retrospect I don't know how much it added to the show.

I don't know. I just thought the ending that came after the closing credits, in which Rust and Marty become surfing detectives, was kind of jarring and didn't fit with the theme of the show.

I agree. This was basically a buddy movie. In the end the two guys reunite, kick a$$ and are better for it. The plot was incidental.

I thought the detail on the killer's home was fantastic-just because it really added a mood of horror and foreboding to those scenes.

I agree with everything above. It was a "buddy movie". And it was a "mood of horror and foreboding" movie ("series", of course, not "movie").

However, it was also set up as an intricate plot series, but there were some parts in the last episode that didn't work. The way Rust and Marty managed to survive was lacking in credibility, as was the clue that enabled them to solve the mystery. And I would've liked to see more resolution of the plot, i.e. the relationship between the three whacko killers and the more prominent society members who were also involved.

Still, it was a winner, w/o question. It is supposed to continue next year, right? I understand it will be with an entirely different cast and plot (nothing continues from this season), am I right?

Cary Fukunaga -- the Oakland-born, UC Santa Cruz-educated feature film director who directed every episode of this season (which is unusual for TV), including the tracking shot ending to Episode 4 -- won't be back as a director next season. But he'll still remain as an executive producer.

My initial reaction after watching the finale was the realization that Breaking Bad and Bryan Cranston might lose at the Emmys. This may still be the case, but after giving it some further thought, I think it's safe to say the show fell short of its promise. Don't get me wrong. The finale was highly entertaining and had me on the edge of my seat, but it simply left too much unanswered. I get that that wasn't the intent, and I got a kick out of the Breaking Bad homage with the "hired assassin" gag. Still, while Breaking Bad may have gone to an extreme in tying up seemingly every loose end, I thought True Detective went too far in the other direction. Still a great show, and if it does go on to unseat Breaking Bad, I won't be too upset about it.

Actually, that's definitely not going to happen.

1. True Detective will compete in the Emmy category for TV miniseries, Breaking Bad will compete as a TV drama.

As an anthology series with a different cast each season, True Detective can compete as a miniseries. And it most certainly will to avoid the Breaking Bad competition.

If you look at American Horror Story, several of its actresses have been nominated in the TV movie/miniseries category in recent years because it, too, is an anthology series.

2. For the first time in several years, the TV movie and the TV miniseries category will be split in two (they were combined due to the lack of quality TV movies in recent years. But TV movies made a comeback.)

So True Detective will have its own TV miniseries category to itself.

Every time I see Woody Harrelson's face I laugh just thinking about his role as the German transvestite hooker, Galaxia, in Anger Management. Now that is f'ing funny.

I guess this is what happens when you base your assumptions on something you read on Wikipedia. Should be a fierce battle for best drama. I wonder who the odds makers would favor between True Detective and Breaking Bad.

My only mistake was using the word "will" -- something I learned not to do at the Daily Cal. Should've said "is expected."

Because HBO was widely expected, not based on Wikipedia, to submit True Detective for the easy miniseries category.

So, yes, it's a shocker that they're going with the drama category. And so, so unexpected.

Which is why HBO's decision is so newsworthy, with headlines like:

"The Emmy Race Just Got Crazier"

As for who will win, maybe HBO is banking on Emmy voters thinking it rewarded Breaking Bad for its final season already.

Saw the first post in this thread, but was afraid of reading into for fear or encountering spoilers. I just started and I am a few episodes deep, Marty got tossed out of the house by Maggie, and Cohle says to him "With all the dick swagger you roll, you can't spot crazy p*ssy??"

haha. so far so good.

You also said "that's definitely not going to happen" when I mentioned the prospects of Breaking Bad going against True Detective for best drama and best actor. If I had to predict right now, I'd guess that BB wins best drama, but Cranston loses to McConaughey for best actor. From what I understand, just one episode is submitted, and Ozymandias was easily better than any single episode from True Detective. At the same time, Emmy voters seem to want to reward movie stars. Hence, McConaughey beats out Cranston. But who knows. It's been a pretty long time since Breaking Bad went off the air. Could be out of sight, out of mind.

Re: McConaughey: What if Emmy voters have McConaughey fatigue? What if they're pissed that he's only gracing TV with his presence for one season, then bailing? What if they're disappointed with the True Detective ending, as many were? Meanwhile, Breaking Bad stars have a way of staying in the news (Cranston was on The View a few weeks back promoting his LBJ Broadway show) and there should be Better Call Saul promos by the time of the Emmys, which are in August this year due to Sunday Night Football.

Really was engrossed watching TD, very well done. I had to watch it delayed so avoided this thread until now. I was surprised by the happy ending, I was sure that either Cole or Hart would die, depending on how they wanted to play it. But I wasn't disappointed, it was grim enough as is, the ending was a relief.

As far as Emmys go, I was surprised HBO entered TD as a drama. Because Game of Thrones is going to win. Seriously, knowing what is to come, it's going to have a great chance.

As much as I loved Breaking Bad it should only win once for the 5th season...
