happy birth day doonesbury!

that morning, my first quarter at cal, woke up in our tilted-brick apartment on warring, shared with three other kids, just south of tri-delta house. random fall saturdays (surprise!) the street was mobbed.

neighborly memorial was of course left wide open all the time [pooower to the peeeople, right on], so now and then we'd run laps on the field before breakfast.

about a year later finally saw a first game from tightwad, all other particulars long gone bye-bye.

Probably returning from an extremely isolated & boring (albeit classified & astounding) mission, somewhere in the South Pacific...

... a journey during which four Thor Heyerdahl-inspired dudes, trying to cross from Ecuador to Australia on three balsa logs, needed helpfood, water, batteries and teeth pulledall duly provided courtesy of U.S. taxpayers...

... and the biggest thing going were the games of a Strat-o-matic football league, nightly held in sick bay with crowds so big they had to dangle from overhead vents...

All the while dreaming of Berkeley...

In 1970, three quarters of the cars you would see on the streets of Berzerkeley were VW's.

Ha... I was in 8th grade at King Jr High in Berkeley. Actually, The Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Junior Memorial Junior High School. Try saying that in one breath.

Some years later I ended up going to the same law school as Joanie Caucus.

Let's see. October 1970...I would have been in 5th grade at Columbus School in Berkeley. Columbus School is now known as Rosa Parks School and has been rebuilt since I was a student there.

In those days, busing was common for elementary school kids. I lived in North Berkeley but was bused to Columbus School in West Berkeley.

I also recall reading Doonesbury in the SF Chronicle.

P.S. October 26th was only 9 days after the infamous 1970 Cal vs. UCLA game where Dennis Dummit was awarded a phantom TD after crawling into the end zone from the 2.

I was a few months into a 6 year stint, living in Medellin, Colombia.
(7 years out of Cal).

Yes it was most interesting.!!! Plenty of stories to tell.

We could hear Cal football live on the Armed Forces Station on short wave radio.

To answer the questions below...

Colombia has a ton of very gorgeous women.

That big drug kingpin in those days lived with some extended family just down the street. One of his nephews about age 10 hopped the fence to our yard and stole my 3 year old son's choo choo train toy....about 18 inches in size.
Our muchacha/maid went after him yelling and got it back.

Later on, one nite she heard noise in the kitchen, and our Doberman was going crazy....we adults were not home.....she yelled my husband's name making it seem like he was on site...and the thief ran.

so we moved across town some 10 miles away to a large finca/farm...AND acquired two very vociferous dogs. German shepherds no more trouble.

Inserting wood disk in the septum/lip was a practice in the Amazon Basin area. Long way away.

Also an 8th grader, across the bay, at the generically named "Central School" (in San Carlos). Interesting to see the various vintages of Bear on this board.

Two questions:

1) Did you escape with your septum?
2) Did you find, as I did in Cali, that Colombia is chalked full of smok'in hotties?

Where was I?
I was a young 2d LT, Admin Officer of the Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the 15th Support Brigade at Fort Lewis, Washington.

The H&HC provided logistical support to the training facility at Ft. Lewis.
One of my primary jobs was to process troops to Vietnam and back to Ft. Lewis before their discharge from active duty.

As a graduate of that Commie, Pinko University - Berzerkley, I took a lot of cr*p from the "Lifers" stationed at "Lewis". Never mind that I had been ROTC, all Berkeley students were the same - Pot-smoking Dirty Hippies.

...of Larry Zeno's mystery crawling TD a couple of years earlier. You can thank Earl Boles for that one. Boles was an "unlikeable" PE teacher at Portola JHS in 1956. Zeno was arrested for burglary (not to be confused with theft of the game).
