Exceptions. Look at all the JC lineman currently, or recently on the team - none were ever in the mix for playing time. There is a reason they went the JC route - and if they came to Cal it wasn't because of their academic deficiencies. If he is able to help out and add depth, great, but we can win with the 5 kids out there now - assuming our running backs stay healthy.

We can't look at the JC linemen currently on the team. There are none. 2013: Tyndall. Slated to start but derailed by injuries, Matt Williams moved to DT because of injuries. 2012: Matt Williams -didn't contribute. 2011: Just Williams and Tyndall 2010: Donovan Edwards: Starter. 2009: Edwards: Starter.

JC OL coming in to start isn't guaranteed by any means but certainly better odds than a freshman OL doing so.

and, if they 'shirt, they still have two years to play in addition to their JC experience, which has been evaluated playing at a higher level than most HS linemen, O & D (as well as their college academics).

You are correct, MB. Far from being a gamble, taking a JC tackle in this last class was important.

Aside from Moore, we have little returning experience on the OL's exterior. While guys like Farley, Okafor, A Cochran, Johnson, Bunte, etc., may well become good players at RT (or, in some cases, another position), it is by no means a given to happen this year, or in 2015 for that matter.

Like those mentioned above, Granado is not certain to become a stud OT or even a starter at Cal. However, it makes good sense to take a kid with some JC starting experience to increase our depth and chances of finding a good option at an important position, particularly where the kid has demonstrated a bit of a mean streak (which, IMO, we have lacked in recent years).

Does he need to put on some weight? Probably, but that can be said for others as well. None of the incumbents are without vulnerability or relative shortcoming. It would've helped had he been here in the spring, for obvious reasons, but that doesn't mean Granado won't become a good player here. It all remains to be seen. The more competition, the better.

Go Bears!

Fraizer is a JC kid... I thought there was another, but I guess I was thinking of Williams.

Frazier's a walkon with no scholarship. Can't point to him as an example. There aren't any other JC OL.

Masau, who are 'your' 5 OLs that we can win with?

Between Moore, Borrayo, Rigsbee, Crosthwaite, Farley, Okafor, Adcock (assuming he is healthy) and Matt Cochran you have kids returning with starting experience, and with the exception of the latter two, a group (the first 5) that has played together the entire spring as a unit - something that we didn't have last year at all. A healthy Lasco running behind them makes everything else click on offense - the spring game clips of Lasco are very encouraging. Having Isi and CJ being able to run inside made the defenses honest enough that Maynard was OK effective - Goff is already much more so and will benefit immensely from a balanced offense.

The JC tackle is not coming in as a project. He is being counted on to start at Rt,where we are extremely weak.Okafor is going to be good, and very well could end up starting their.Farley had one start last season and lasted about two series in that start, and never sniffed the field the rest of the season. No upper body strength, lousy foot work on his pass protection. Not on scholarship for a reason. If Adcock can go at center,we may very well see Rigsbee out at RT if the JC kid cannot crack the top five. The starting five for the spring game will be entirely different by anywhere from two to three players come fall.

I thought you'd list Farley. Do you apply the same level of 'gamble' to walkons as to recruited JC players? I hope we have 5 OL guys who can excel in this system. I don't care if they come from a JC or if they walkon or if Sonny has to fly them in from the moon. I miss having a decent running game and a QB that has time to throw more than a 5 yard pass.

Well said DLS DAD,his hidden agenda is all about Farley on this site and another one. That JC tackle was recruited to play from day one because of the obvious problems out their right now. They didn't have Rigsbee out their running reps because he is a natural tackle.
