Well, Greece just lucked in, so they'll improve that number.

Damn, Asia and Africa are doing pitiful. Sucks because the game needs to keep growing in Asia.

Ivory Coast probably "deserved" to advance based on their overall play, but dems the breaks.

Can't say the same for any of the Asian teams.

But what a bad call. Greece could be the least-deserving team through.

I can see the call being technically correct (maybe TheBearsHaveWon can comment on the specifics of what draws a foul), as the Ivory Coast defender did seem to step on the Greek player's foot as he was winding up to take a shot. Still, what a rough time for that call to be made.

Algeria will probably make it.

When Arsenal tried to buy Suarez last summer, Arsene Wenger, perhaps the most intellectual of managers, very calm and collected, said Suarez is a dream player: a beast on the field, angry, driven but the nicest guy off of it. The line between greatness (Suarez is a top five player) and insanity is very, very thin--we saw that with Zidane. Interesting that both times it was against the Italians who are known for diving, getting under your skin and just plain irritating the hell out of you.

The last two times he bit someone it was so his club team would sell him. First time it worked, second time Liverpool stuck with him. Over the last few days, his camp has been telling the media he wants to move to Barcelona (or maybe Madrid)--both of whom would take him in a heart beat.

at a certain point if im suarez, i just wouldnt want to be known for that. its got to be embarrassing. if it ends up that hes slightly lessor of a player, but can refrain from bizzare behavior, im sure most soccer fans and teams would take that guy rather than this version. sounds like the guy needs to take it down a notch.

but not at the expense of CONCACAF.

I can just see FIFA taking a bid away for 2018 despite the strong performances of the US, Mexico, and Costa Rica.

Yes, he was trying to take Chiellini down a notch. On his shoulder.

We have 3.5 bids because of Jack Warner's crooked ass and the insane amount of Caribbean votes that he always swung Blatter and Co.'s way.

Now that Warner's reign is over and he's pretty much in quarantine in Trinidad because of a U.S. federal investigation who knows how "in" we are.

Somehow I doubt they mess with that half spot considering that FIFA may need the U.S. Soccer Federation to step in and host the 2022 World Cup. Concacaf just needs to keep growing.

That's a penalty. It's also dangerous play. You can't block a player's leg when he goes to kick the ball. 100% right call. Otherwise everytime the goalie kicks the ball, you might as well grab his leg, too.

Someone just needs to take out his teeth, with their elbow. I mean seriously, hats off to Chillini for sort of keeping his composure. The video of him doing it to the chelsea guy (Ivanez?) is really egregious. He latched onto his arm good there. What a psycho.

A more adequate translation of puto would be whore and when directed at a man, it is implied that he is gay male whore. In this context, though, I think puto would be equivalent to "p-ssy".

The weird part is that FIFA is upset about this but gives Russia the next world cup.

I have a coworker friend who's from Mexico City (moved here a year ago) and straight up told me that puto in this context means "f*gg*t." FIFA is interpreting this correctly.

f@ggot = maricon, joto, and yes, puto

Puto is much more nuanced than that, though...

Is Oswaldo Sanchez gay? No - Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Over 10 years ago, Atlas fans started this chant against this goalie because he switched from Atlas to Chivas. Are they calling him gay? No, they were calling him a traitor, a prostitute.

Agree it's nuanced but a Mexican from Mexico told me that's what it means in this context. It's possible something was lost in translation but his English is quite decent so I'll take his word for it.

The thing that may be out of context is how widely the word is used in Mexico versus "f*****t" here which has generally seen as an unacceptable slur but I can't really speak to that.

Fag is pretty common.

Edit: and the justification for its use is very similar.

"No, no. In this context it means lame or sissy, or pussy. Not gay..."

The similarities are pretty close.

Nice win for Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The only newcomers in the World Cup and their first win.

sycasey:
Fouls and Misconduct are covered under Law 12.

For something to be a "Foul" the action must meet four requirements:
1. The ball must be in play
2. The action must occur on the field of play
3. The action must be committed by a player
4. The action must be against an opponent (you cannot foul a teammate)

There are 10 Direct Free Kick (DFK) Fouls.
If one of these DFK fouls is committed by a player within his own penalty area (anywhere within the larger of the two marked rectangular areas in front of each goal) the result is a penalty kick (PK) - regardless of the position of the ball as long as the ball was in play at the time of the offense.

The 10 DFK fouls are:
1 kicks or attempts to kick an opponent
2 trips or attempts to trip an opponent
3 jumps at an opponent
4 charges an opponent (illegally)
5 strikes or attempts to strike an opponent
6 pushes an opponent
7 tackles an opponent (illegally)

(Note: for 1, 2 and 5, the attempted action need not be successful for a foul to be called, simply trying to do this is enough, hence a trip could be called even if the intended target never falls down...)

8 holds an opponent
9 spits at an opponent

This is in a special category as it is always also misconduct and a
straight red card offense. If it is not directed at an opponent, then it
would not be a foul. However, spitting at anyone is still misconduct
and a send off offense.
10 handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his
own penalty area)
Note - this would seem not to meet the strict definition of a foul in
that the action is not directed against an opponent.
However, handling is considered an offense against the entire opposing
team.

I separated the first seven as the referee must consider whether misconduct also occurred.

If the action is careless - no misconduct simple foul. DFK and move on.
If the action is reckless - misconduct - caution the miscreant - DFK
If the action is with excessive force - misconduct - send off the miscreant - DFK

Careless, reckless and excessive force are defined as follows:
(yes, in practice, the gradation becomes subjective judgement from one referee to another)

Careless” means that the player has shown a lack of attention or
consideration when making a challenge or that he acted without precaution.

"Reckless” means that the player has acted with complete disregard to the danger to, or consequences for, his opponent.

Using excessive force” means that the player has far exceeded the necessary use of force and is in danger of injuring his opponent

Wild -
Playing in a dangerous manner (PIADM) requires that there be NO contact as it is only an Indirect Free Kick offense (IFK).
Once there is contact, PIADM is no longer a consideration as the action has risen to DFK level.

Perhaps you meant that tripping or tackling an opponent in such a manner is also misconduct as there was a disregard for the danger to (reckless), or actual danger of injuring (excessive force) an opponent.

In these cases the misconduct is sanctioned with a caution or a send off.
Further, if the action is a DFK foul and if committed by a player in his own penalty area, the restart is a PK.

And now all three have advanced to the Round of 16. Hard to see how they could justify taking a spot away now.

Plenty of pundits had CONCACAF with 0 teams advancing to the round of 16. Having 3 teams is a pretty remarkable feat. Leads me to believe that CONCACAF players are underrepresented in Europe.

Damn, Algeria's fans looked like they were about ready to burn the stadium down after scoring that equalizer against Russia.
