Well, Greece just lucked in, so they'll improve that number.
Damn, Asia and Africa are doing pitiful. Sucks because the game needs to keep growing in Asia.

But what a bad call. Greece could be the least-deserving team through.

When Arsenal tried to buy Suarez last summer, Arsene Wenger, perhaps the most intellectual of managers, very calm and collected, said Suarez is a dream player: a beast on the field, angry, driven but the nicest guy off of it. The line between greatness (Suarez is a top five player) and insanity is very, very thin--we saw that with Zidane. Interesting that both times it was against the Italians who are known for diving, getting under your skin and just plain irritating the hell out of you.
The last two times he bit someone it was so his club team would sell him. First time it worked, second time Liverpool stuck with him. Over the last few days, his camp has been telling the media he wants to move to Barcelona (or maybe Madrid)--both of whom would take him in a heart beat.

at a certain point if im suarez, i just wouldnt want to be known for that. its got to be embarrassing. if it ends up that hes slightly lessor of a player, but can refrain from bizzare behavior, im sure most soccer fans and teams would take that guy rather than this version. sounds like the guy needs to take it down a notch.

but not at the expense of CONCACAF.
I can just see FIFA taking a bid away for 2018 despite the strong performances of the US, Mexico, and Costa Rica.

I can see the call being technically correct (maybe TheBearsHaveWon can comment on the specifics of what draws a foul), as the Ivory Coast defender did seem to step on the Greek player's foot as he was winding up to take a shot. Still, what a rough time for that call to be made.

Yes, he was trying to take Chiellini down a notch. On his shoulder.

A more adequate translation of puto would be whore and when directed at a man, it is implied that he is gay male whore. In this context, though, I think puto would be equivalent to "p-ssy".
The weird part is that FIFA is upset about this but gives Russia the next world cup.

I have a coworker friend who's from Mexico City (moved here a year ago) and straight up told me that puto in this context means "f*gg*t." FIFA is interpreting this correctly.

f@ggot = maricon, joto, and yes, puto
Puto is much more nuanced than that, though...
Is Oswaldo Sanchez gay? No - Not that there is anything wrong with that.
Over 10 years ago, Atlas fans started this chant against this goalie because he switched from Atlas to Chivas. Are they calling him gay? No, they were calling him a traitor, a prostitute.

Agree it's nuanced but a Mexican from Mexico told me that's what it means in this context. It's possible something was lost in translation but his English is quite decent so I'll take his word for it.
The thing that may be out of context is how widely the word is used in Mexico versus "f*****t" here which has generally seen as an unacceptable slur but I can't really speak to that.

That's a penalty. It's also dangerous play. You can't block a player's leg when he goes to kick the ball. 100% right call. Otherwise everytime the goalie kicks the ball, you might as well grab his leg, too.

And now all three have advanced to the Round of 16. Hard to see how they could justify taking a spot away now.
