About 40 years ago, I was a young field engineer whose job it was to visit industrial construction sites to install or start up mechanical and electrical equipment for the owners of chemical and industrial plants. Our territory was up and down the West Coast from the Mexican border in the South to the Columbia River in the North.
My boss and I had been doing a job in Indio, not far from the Mexican border. The weather was very hot, 115 degF in the shade, and after three days, we were exhausted. After work, we decided to drive straight home non-stop to San Francisco, to get out of the heat. We arrived in San Francisco at 2AM, tired and hungry. We figured that in Chinatown, there might be a restaurant open, and there was. My boss left to use the telephone to call his wife and tell her we had returned, and to check for messages. He returned to the table, and told me that the management of a company in LA wanted to have us sign a contract to service their equipment in the LA area. They wanted us to meet them for lunch in LA the next day at noon. They also wanted us to do an installation job for them while were down in LA. This meant we would have to take our truck and all our equipment and instruments with us. I was now 3AM, so this would give us time to go home, shower, and get on the road to drive back to LA.
My fortune cookie after the meal said, "Your place in the pathway of life is in the driver's seat."
I have been a firm believer in fortune cookies ever since.
So look out for Sonny Dykes and the Bears this season!
