Ironic considering the only reason to kick on 3rd down was in case of a bad snap.

But they used their last time out before the snap, so they would have has to scramble to get another kick off. Just bad clock/game management. That's a tough kick from that close on the hash.

The margin for error for the Buffs is too damn narrow in the Pac 12. Going 2-4 and losing on the final drive each week is every bit as brutal as getting curb stomped.

Upcoming games against USC, UCLA, UDub, Arizona, Oregon, and Utah aren't going to be any easier. 2-10 looks likely.

MacIntyre has been milking as much as he can out of our youthful and largely unheralded recruits. After leaving it all out on the field and coming up losers, the big question now is how much more emotion is left in the tank to keep up the facade of respectability.

The coaching staff will be miracle workers to keep up the gritty level of play now that bowl aspirations have pretty much evaporated. Injuries are starting to pile up, without much depth to compensate.

This team so desperately needs a conference win to keep the fans engaged.

uDuh is yours. Buffs will grind them into the dust.
Way to soon to get that discouraged.

actually when WSU used their timeout they might have forced the field goal on themselves. I remember the sequence and it looks like Connor got hurt for a second time during that drive. He came up limping after one of the plays. After that WSU tried to run the ball into the endzone, but the 2nd down play not only resulted in no gain, but the tangle of bodies wasn't unpiling quickly. The timeout was so WSU didn't run out of time just waiting for everyone to unpile.

But that meant they had no time out left and if the play didn't stop the clock they'd never get a field goal off. If Connor was hurt, they were basically forced to kick right then since they couldn't count on a pass. Not in the red zone where you'll get tight man coverage since you don't fear a receiver turning and going deep.

And I just watched the ESPN recap. Watch it and during the final WSU drive you'll see Connor's final pass attempt. It was a short pass that Mayle ran down to the 2 for the first and goal. Pay attention to Connor because he gets folded in half by a blitzing Cal player just after he releases the ball. I expect if we ask we'll find out that he was hurt by that hit. I'd have to watch a replay of the Pac-12 broadcast to see the aftermath of that play, but that might be why WSU didn't try throwing for the endzone from the two.

They could always take a delay-of-game penalty and move back five yards for a better angle. With the clock already stopped by their time out, there shouldn't be a run-off for the penalty.

Remember that an offensive penalty in the last minutes of a half can be penalized with a time run off rather than yardage. Cal could have just allowed the clock to run out rather than back the ball up to make the kick easier.

That's only when the clock is running in the last minute of either half. In this case the clock was stopped, so there's no 10-second run-off.

Cal can still refuse the yardage if they think the delay penalty is to improve the field goal angle. I've seen it happen.
