He knows what he is doing. He just doesn't have the horses and is dealing with a very difficult offensive philosophy for a DC. Just give him time.

A couple of questions I would like to hear asked of AK:


Who do you see as the defensive MVP for Cal so far this season?

What do you think this defense is capable of doing performance wise before the end of the year?

Kaufman is getting more and more relaxed in every interview.
He projects a very positive attitude and is a great teacher which is absolutely necessary because we are so f'ing young and inexperienced.
He's having fun and, while few would believe it, our D is improving.

How is he as a recruiter?

"9 guys right and 2 wrong" - that's about right...

can't wait until we get 11 doing it right. he does look calm, given the circumstances. that tells me he has Dykes total support, his defense is making progress, and he knows it. Look for a good game from the Cal defense this week.

Supposedly that is why he was fired at Cincinnati ... not much on recruiting. Supposedly. I'm not bothered if coordinators don't do a lot of recruiting - as long as the position coaches do...

So far the defensive MVP is Jalen Jefferson. He made game saving plays against NU (two) and against CU (sacked QB).

I think he went out and found Wainwright, who is a good value-add already IMO.

can agree with both ... can wait till wainwright is full go at LB and not just special teams he plays with his head on fire... and loves his team did you see the hug he gave to goff at end of wash st game

I really like his demeanor - definitely has that keep calm and carry on attitude. I will like him even more when we start stopping other teams' offenses. Really hoping that begins this Saturday.

The thing I like about wainwright is his ability to hit. Wow. I mean, knock out blows. But I am glad we have enough depth where he isn't really playing right away.

what's a realistic timetable for getting this D turned around? we saw some flashes or good play on D the first 10 quarters of the season. Injuries, lack of depth, experience, and talent have been blamed. Assuming the scheme is OK, how and when do we get better? So far we only have three defensive players committed, and we will be losing Lowe and Clark to graduation and possibly Scarlett and Jalil to the draft. Even if we do add some talent with this recruiting class, how many are realistically ready to contribute as freshman enough to help turn the D around? Many of the 2015 kids are already committed elsewhere, so do you guys see improvement on the horizon? I do feel like Kaufman and Burns are good teachers (just a gut feeling), so hopefully our current underclassmen can be coached up. We have a couple of DL, Looney and Palmer, ready to go next year as well as others in S&C who will be ready.
I also don't think we'll lose either Scarlett or Moose.

I don't doubt that, but draft grades + opportunity for paycheck weighed against the risk of further injury will leads to a couple of WRs looking at it, IMO.
