Charles Phan of Slanted Door fame has plans to open a cafe in Wurster Hall. Bravo Bob Lalanne, newish vice chancellor of Real estate, for increasing usage of Cal property. I believe Bob actually lived on Bancroft within view of Wurster hall while an undergrad.

Great. I spent many nights there cramming for finals (it was the only building that didn't kick you out after hours). I heard that he went to Cal - didn't know he was in architecture.

I lived in Wurster Hall. My big regret at Cal was that I did not make more of an effort to pull away from that building and experience the rest of the campus and students.
Can't believe Phan is opening up there. It was sandwiches and chips at the cafe back then.

Phan is a Cal alum. He also dropped out as a Arch major so he's familiar with Wuster. See, sometimes education has limited benefits.

Now onto some wursterbating!

We'd been going to (and loving) Slanted Door for years, but it wasn't until the dinner for Byron's opening there a few years ago that I finally realized the famous Charles Phan was the Charles I went to Cal with. I remember an epic party at the Oakland warehouse they converted into a loft when they were roommates....

Really happy for his success!

Agree, I'm happy he made it big and glad I know someone who did. It's proof it does happen. Back in the day who could have guessed who would have made it? I wouldn't have tagged Chuck but I wouldn't have tagged anyone I knew. Just figured everyone would do reasonably well or okay. When he first opened, didn't have a clue how he'd do...then Bill Clinton stopped by.

As to why a place at Wurster? Probably revenge.
