Jared Goff, Cal QB (50-1): Goff's numbers (62 percent completion rate, 35 TDs, 7 INTs) were in the same ballpark as Kessler's, which is quite the compliment, considering Cal is still working its way back and doesn't have nearly the skill-player firepower of USC.

There's a sense from Pac-12 folks that Goff -- a QB prototype at 6-foot-4, 210 pounds -- could really break out in his third season and elevate his name on NFL draft boards. The Heisman radar could very well work in concert with Goff's professional prospects.

The chances of any Cal player, no matter his numbers, getting a Heisman has odds between slim and none.
Lasco could run for 2000 yards and he might get a mention, but that's it.

We've had a few players deserving, and they ended up far down the list, if on it at all.
The most extreme was '75 when Muncie was the clear choice, but they gave it to the tOSU guy for the second year in a row.

Goff's odds are tied to the team breaking out nationally.

Exactly. We will have to win at least 9 games (excluding bowl) for Goff to be in the discussion. Guys that put up huge stats on mediocre teams don't win heismans.

not just Goff but any candidate. Kessler's odds are gonna be tied to how he does against top 25 competition this year. His #s from last year against to 25 competition are actually really bad. BUT he plays for a team that will have the national spotlight right out of the gate. Goff will need to not only have a good season, but the TEAM needs to win so the spotlight "sees" him. Factor in he's west coast too

not so fast .. number of wins is relative to how the rest of top teams finish out .. if 8 wins is second in division /3rd in conference and the wins come in highlight fashion that will factor ... if we play like we did first half vs ARZ in whole games vs ranked or top teams

then there will be usual bias

goff goes into austin and wins with play and leadership he will be "getting hot " in the Heisman race

He needs 3 things to happen:

1. Top 5 passing numbers

2. A BIG performance in Austin

3. Cal playing in the Pac 12 championship game

If those things happen he will be invited.

Go Bears

i dont think 3 is a must and he can be top 10 passing numbers across the board cut down on fumbles ...

gotta have signature wins plan and simple

A true Heisman candidate would have been in the end-zone successfully defending that AZ Hail Mary.

Hmm. Goff needs to sacrifice some Furd blood to get the Heisman, defeat the usurpers Trojans, Bruins, etc., and then take the Rose Bowl. Before winter comes.

Important, too, is looking REALLY good on some plays that make the highlights and, when one of our games is being televised to a wide audience, doing some great things and never having a rotten game. (Every time we play so late that they are already asleep on the East Coast, that will work against him, too... unless it helps him hide a bad game.)

He needs to be SC, and win in LA, and take Stanford and Texas down. Do all of that, and get 10 wins total, and he will be in the running. Anything less and he is perhaps on the stage but not in the winners circle.

I think the bigger prize for him is #1 draft pick. And that is all about being tough, accurate and a winner, which I think he is. No drop-off against the best teams and he will do OK there.

Muncie would have had a better shot if Cal had gone to the RB that season (which would have happened if Cal had gotten it done vs. ucla.

Muncie deserved to win - people just voted for Archie again because of the novelty of having a 2-time winner.

Wouldn't hurt to win/end pivotal games in style like the opposite of UCLA and BYU last year.

nope
The East Coast Boyzclub wasn't about to award the Heisman to a guy from Hippie U.
Griffin's stats were meh compared to Muncie, not to mention the comparative value of each to his team.

10 wins, including a bowl game will get him to NYC- but that will not be enough to win. Watch out for what you wish for. This means he will consider leaving for the NFL. The deciding factor will be when the two Heisman candidates (Kessler and Goff) match up at Memorial Stadium when Cal plays SC. College Game Day in Berkeley?
