The place looks great compared to what we had before. Webcam:

Ooooh, thanks for posting this. Gotta check it out one for a pregame this year. Anyone know if they leaving tables set up on the plaza all the time, or just for events? Not enough outdoor plazas with tables like that. I remember seeing a big plaza outside the student union at UCSD a while back and thought it was something that Cal should have... now if bums just park their bum asses there all day, that might ruin it pretty quickly.

I generally like the renovation EXCEPT for the weird roof line of the extension of the old Student Union toward Bancroft Ave. the weird angle makes the building look like something out of Dr. Suess. Had the roof line been built parallel with the existing balcony line it could have served as a new balcony overlooking Bancroft Avenue.
Oh well, the entire facility looks better than it did originally. So 3 steps forward and 1 step back.

Funny, the roofline, and the aesthetics from bancroft are what I like the most.

My thoughts: The plaza itself needs green. Lots and lots of green. Planters/trees etc. Way too much empty space. As far as the new digs inside... they're really nice. Very spacious, very open, tons of seating/tables. Outlets everywhere! The original staircase in MLK looks awesome, and the new one that spills out towards the plaza is pretty stunning. The whole place feels like you're inside a fancy new tech campus.

EDIT: Just saw the note about the tailgate... which is interesting because ASUC just told me Bear's Lair wont open until next week...

Gotta sell those out-of-staters on the tech aspect. Then jack up OOS tuition even more. I'm only half kidding. I do think state schools that draw big out of state dollars end up sprucing up a lot of student service buildings to attract $$$. People with $$$ don't like decrepit.

I had the same thoughts about greenery. There are new planters on the north end and of the plaza. Also, the staircase leading to upper Sproul has plants now and less concrete, and wheelchair accessible.
