LOL, why do you guys keep talking about how small he is? He's not small. Drew's exactly his size and so is Tartabull. No one calls them tiny or even undersized. McClure's the same height and 10 lbs heavier. Turner's the same size and lighter.

Sonny started it. (See Lonny Powell) I know. Let it go.

P.S. Anyone know the logic of giving "tiny" Luke a shot at Safety but not Lonny "Lott" Pow!! I mean hes wasting away on the bench. Makes no sense.

I think everybody is rooting for him! He represents everything I love about Cal. Students from blue collar backgrounds who over achieve.

I would not call Luke Rubenzer's background "blue collar." He grew up in affluent Scottsdale, AZ (home is worth seven figures) the son of succesful parents (his mom is a VP at PF Chang). His dad paid for the best professional training and coaching he could get. That does not take anything away from Luke, his grit, determination and love for the game.

I think the disconnect is that "blue-collar" is loosed used as a complimentary adjective for all Cal recruits/players we deem underrated in HS rankings, or to describe players who are tough. lunch pail, hard hat, and all...

I'm glad you understood my metaphor. I suppose I could have used it better.

Powell's never played DB and it's hard to call a freshman redshirt season wasting away. No way would he be seeing time at safety this year if he played there.

As for Powell's size at LB, yes, 5-10/210 is too small. He doesn't have the frame to play at 230+ effectively in the staff's opinion and I can't argue with that.

I think there is some merit in keeping Luke in the QB loop, he could be a great change of pace guy out of the wildcat or other short yardage situations, especially since opponents don't expect hm this year and won't be prepared. Would love to see that once in the middle of a big game this season.
