Luke looked pretty good at Safety.

He is a natural. The trouble is, he is tiny. Most likely, the SC sized tight ends might kill him. He made plenty of mistakes to learn from the "digital files(?)". He can be coached up, but can he be stretched?

Man, that Grambling State Band was fun!

Luke at QB is undersized, but don't sell him "short".
At 6', 195 he's a good size for safety.
S&C will continue to improve his size, strength and speed as it's done for others.
He's an athlete and smart, so he'll get lots of field time.

Agree he is a natural. His move on the int was a thing of beauty. I thought it was a TD for sure the he came up with the ball.

He also made a couple of other good plays.

Yeah he doesn't have great speed, you saw that when he was trying to chase the guy down the sidelines and Vanderbilt actually came from behind where Luke was and ran the guy down

Rubenzer is like Turner, Quarterbacks in high school who can play other positions. As I remember as a kid, quarterbacks were lots of times extremely talented, competitive leader type kids who could play multiple positions and chose being a quarterback because it was the most important. There use to be some coaches back in the day at lessor schools who drafted nothing but fast quarterbacks who couldn't throw well and converted them to DB's Oregon state was one. Heck, I think that is why they took turner, even though he can throw pretty well. Its those other abilities that stand out. Heck, some think Mike Vick would of made a better corner back. Jamarcus "the Hut -after Jaba the hut" Russel, the old bust quarterback of the Raiders at 300lbs would of been a great center. Ahahahahaha - I make me laugh.

that was really impressive by Vanderbilt. I believe he outran Luke and Hawkins

I thought Rubenzer was second string. However, it seemed to me he played most of the game.

Yesterday Rubenzer played smart and showed that he is not afraid at all to hit. As noted above, he'll only get better.

Luke is definitely a baller and will work to perfect his new role as a safety.
QB is too stacked with better talent but Luke has earned more field time at his new position.

Luke's play at safety and Chase's play at QB mean that we will be seeing a lot of Luke at safety.

I wondered who that was. #39 (I believe?) wasn't listed in my program.

I liked too that he played with energy, enthusiasm and passion. No sulking with this kid.

Troy Polamalu is 5'10", #210, so Rube is big enough. The kid is a FB player and he wants to play, good for him.

I've stood next to Troy a few times and he seems bigger than that. He also ran sub 4.4 at the combine.

Luke is a huge step up from what we have had at safety the last few years, but he needs to play disciplined and make great decisions because he doesn't have recovery speed and won't overwhelm you with physicality.

I thought the pick was great and he could be better for us than Piatt if he can stay disciplined. Guys who are overmatched can have a tendency to cheat a little in order to get an advantage which can leave them flat footed and out of position of they guessed wrong. I think we have seen that a number of times in the last few years and would be good to avoid if possible.

There were at least a couple recent number changes out there yesterday. Vanderbilt wore 29 most of camp. Turner wore 5 iirc, whatever it was it wasn't 19 like yesterday.

Speaking of Piatt, where was he yesterday? Pardon me for tuning out during the offseason.

Piatt practiced some during camp but has been delayed from full service while he restrengthens his knee.
He is due back in a few weeks, probably for the in conference games.

Has Piatt already used his red shirt? Any chance that the decide on keeping Piatt on the shelf depending on how Drew, Stefan, Kairi, Derron, and Luke hold up?
MoragaBear

Yes, Piatt's used his redshirt. He's practiced some but not full contact. I agree that he'll probably be back around the start of P12 play.

As for Rubenzer, in what world is a 5-11/190 safety tiny?

All I know is in one of the full-contact scrimmages, Enwere had a run up the middle and Rubenzer dropped him in his tracks, right at the line of scrimmage.

The guy can hit and he most definitely has ball skills. Could be a bit faster but shouldn't be hurt by it unless he gets isolated in space one on one against a speedy receiver and the qb makes a really good throw.

Was curious what NFL safety sizes were just to see. Earl Thomas of the Seahawks is 5'10...Eric Weddle of the Chargers is 5'11, both are about 200lbs..so 6' is about right it seems.

exactly! 5 foot nothin', a hundred and nothin', but a pick, nearly two, and tenacity the likes of which we haven't seen in a long time. nigel burton was a tremendous back at UW many years ago, purely with heart. tiniest db i've ever seen. rube's one of my favorites now. this team is really exciting.

Wondering out loud-Did they limit McClure's minutes?

Seems that they limited the minutes of most of the 1s DBs - building needed real depth through on-field reps.

I am really rooting for this guy
he was a warrior last year, and some how kept making plays even through the defense knew he would run

this year he's behind Goff and a redshirt freshmen

so what does he do? whine, sit in a corner, transfer?

no...he marches into Sonny's office and say I want to get on the field

yeah, he doesn't have the tangibles you'd like to see in a safety, mainly speed, but he's like a coaches son...he has a high football IQ, and that is a VERY good trait in a safety

Not sure how much PT he will get, but given our troubles in the secondary, my guess is a lot

LOL, why do you guys keep talking about how small he is? He's not small. Drew's exactly his size and so is Tartabull. No one calls them tiny or even undersized. McClure's the same height and 10 lbs heavier. Turner's the same size and lighter.
