Reminded me of that Jeremy Ross scrum v. Wazzu.

although I was also a fan of fundamentally sound DB play and reasonably tight coverage. The pick right before the half was huge. Otherwise, they might have been at least able to pin us with a punt, and we may have played it a lot differently.

How about Trevor Davis - 46 yards per catch x 3.

+1 ...and he was a blast to watch.

Don't know how his future pans out but I predict he's going to be a fan favorite...and he made his mom proud.

I'd add Jake Kearny to the unsung hero list. There was a play late in the game where SDSU did a sweep to their right. Kearny spotted it immediately and ran to cut off the outside, taking on two or three blockers in the process. Other defenders swarmed to the ball and killed the play. Looked to me Kearny played it exactly right and will be praised after further film review.

Not sure if he was sung or unsung, but I really liked the way Allensworth played. I remember at least three plays where I thought to myself, that was a great play, and then it was Allensworth.

Good call today, but I'm getting the feeling that MMCM is going to quickly develop into one of the most popular Bears... maybe ever. I mean, how long before they just HAVE TO give him the ball? And what's going to happen when he scores a TD in the Big Game, bowling over the frailer, outmatched Benedict Scarlett?

Basically, the dude's gonna be a "sung hero". Very sung.

Gotta disagree. If we're to compete for the conference championship, we can't make drive-killing mistakes. We have to play Oregon, USC, UCLA & furd.We don't have any room for error. And, that penalty kept Goff from setting the record today.

Haven't rewatched the game but Cole Leininger had a nice game. No big returns, mostly fair catches, if I recall correctly.

Chad Hansen, nice grab on the sideline! No way that is offensive PI (well, maybe in powder puff football). The defender just misjudged it........

In my view, it was a "soft" offensive PI. But it was a push-off. Nevertheless, a heckuva catch by Hansen, and great job keeping his foot in bounds.

I'm in the camp that push-offs should be called much more tightly than they are. So I thought it was kind of ballsy for the ref to call it. I do think it was the correct call.

thought the Ray Hudson sideline catch was also very nice.

still got to reduce the number of drops. treggs is so eager to take off that he starts turning before he secured the ball. Powe with a missed catch that popped up and was almost intercepted.

2 passes from SDSU were sure INTs, but dropped. the only one I remember was Coleman's

Nah, Chad barely touched the defender. The coverage was good but the defender just misjudged the ball and the ref got fooled into thinking "it must have been a push off, otherwise how did the defender miss that?" I bet Sonny apologizes in his presser for going off on Chad.

The SI piece on McMorris is awesome. He puts the shot, so he must have great feet and coordination. Watch to the end and watch a 300+ dude get air on a push up!

Wait, so is MMcM a schollie player? I don't see him on the 2015 commit list.

Despite his awards and honors in HS, at a top school, Mater Dei, in a competitive league, MMcM is a WALK-ON and was poo-poo'd by the neeners because he was too short and didn't have a lot of offers.
Now some neeners are creeping out and praising MMcM.

MMcM has a great story (we're getting a lot of players with great stories) and attending Cal has been EARNED in the classroom and on the field.
Kudos to the coaches for putting him to great use ... and wait'll he carries the ball and catches a pass or two. He has nimble feet and can move.

My wife asked me, "Why do our guys keep dropping the interceptions?" And I told her, "That's why they're defenders and not receivers. It's not as easy as it looks." Yeah, it would've been an even bigger laugher if we'd hauled those in.

Q. What do you call a 4.5 receiver with bad hands ?
A. A defensive back.

Demarriay Drew
He came from across the field to make a tackle on a kick-off
In general we saw DBs making open field tackles that would have gone for TDs last year.
McClure, Allensworth and Drew.

+1 on MMcM's feet and I think he would make a good DL too if the coaches need more depth there at some point in the future. Our Bone package is only used so often, after all.

Also, an Unsung Heroes shout out for James Looney. What a great addition. Yes, he is undersized but he is so active and runs really, really well for a DT. He looks like he could play 3-4 end.

And you can tell he is a fiery competitor. When a guy eludes his grasp he is demonstrably pissed off, even if it's not a play he is supposed to make!

Anyway, in the first quarter, Looney's play of the quarter was the first play from scrimmage. He defeats his block and destroys the ballcarrier for a TFL.

Let's see if we can defeat a certain stupid thread that has had too much life already. I want to talk about Ray Davison's play to end the first quarter (yes, I'm rewatching the game). From his OLB position, SDSU runs a reverse in his direction. Stringing out the play, he takes on and defeats the fullback's block, then the pulling guard's block, and then chases the ballcarrier out of bounds for no gain! 3 on 1 but Ray wins the play.

Coleman was a WR first!!! hope we seize those opportunities in our next 9 games. against tougher opponents, we'll need every opportunity & possession.

Minot, i think the Broussard one was harder to bring down, right?

+ 1,000,000 for Damariay. He played a great first half. Flies to the ball and so, so physical. He made a bunch of tackles but one of my favorite plays was on a SDSU run with about 3-4 minutes to go in the first quarter. Their WR #5 comes out to stalk block DD and DD just smokes him, knocking him backward onto his butt, then gets in on the tackle.

Rewatching the game and I'm really impressed with the tackling of both our safeties in the first quarter and a half. McClure is a beast in the run game and not at all afraid to hit someone. These two guys are going to scare some people.

Tell mrs Bggb2 that Coleman is charging hard to make the tackle. When that ball is released from the QB's hand, he has no choice but to assume the WR is going to make that catch and his primary responsibility at that point is not to miss that tackle and give up YAC or worse, a TD. He's leaning in, and focused on the receiver. If he was allowed to sit back and just look for tipped balls, he makes the interception 10 times out of 10. But that's not what he is coached to do, and for good reason. Sometimes we get lucky- if that ball was six inches lower maybe it hits him in the chest and we're off to the races.

It is a myth that DBs do not have good hands. These guys are consummate athletes. Caleb has very good hands. He would not be in the rotation otherwise.

(I haven't gotten to #22's drop on the DVR yet. . . but yeah, LBs sometimes don't have the best hands)

I thought Coleman's drop looked horrible live at the game but rewatching it on tv, it was tipped by the receiver and it subtly changed directions. That's actually a tough catch on a ball with zip on it.

Devante Downs!

On Devante Wilson's sack at about the 9:00 mark of the second quarter, SDSU ran what Yogi Roth referred to as a "naked" waggle or bootleg - run play action to the right but with the quarterback keeping the ball and rolling out to his left with the fullback in the flat. They ran it once before to great effect. This time, we were ready.

Devante Wilson, of course, stayed home and ended up making the sack. But what made that possible was Devante Downs, the WLB on that side. He read the play and immediately jumped on the fullback's route. With pressure bearing down, the QB would normally dump it off to the FB but with Downs right there, he had nowhere to go and nothing to do but to eat the football. Chomp.

Who was allegedly bashing Morris for being too short? 6 feet isn't short for a running back? Also just who was allegedly bashing him for being a walk on????
MoragaBear
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Morris is 5'10" and there were people responding to some enthusiastic posts about getting him to walk on at Cal by saying he's too short and he has no offers and that he'd have offers if he was legit so what's all the excitement about? Not many but some.

Sometimes very good players who don't have the proper measurables for their projected positions get passed over.

Sometimes programs and ratings services just get things wrong. In Cal's 2015 class, only 1 of the 5 4 star guys is playing (Hawkins) and he was 3rd string and is now on the shelf till next season while lots of 3 star guys are playing and even unsung 2 star Patrick Mekari is backup OT and played in both games. Don't get me wrong. I like all the 4 star guys in the class and some are at impacted positions but still, they're not ahead of the rest of their class, at least initially.

From the 2014 class, of the three 4 star recruits, Lenui switched his commitment to WSU and redshirted and has two tackles in a backup role for the mighty cougs. Brown apparently is transferring out after redshirting and Watson is solid but 3rd string behind fellow 2014 commit 3 star Ewere. Meanwhile 2 star recruits Granado and Kearney are starting and fellow 2 stars Westerfield and Davis are key backups after Westerfield started some as a true frosh.

I'm not saying ratings don't matter. They're right much more often than they're wrong. I just think a lot of Cal fans kind of turn their nose up at recruits if they're not rated highly enough or don't have the offers they'd like to see.

So far it seems like this staff has a pretty good eye for talent so hopefully people will trust their judgment more and more when it comes to recruiting in the future -unless they give people ample reason not to.
