My Final Thoughts On The Aztec-Cal Game

I have mixed feelings about that game a few days later but here they are.

First off. The best team won. Cal beat us AND beat us when we knew exactly what they were going to try and do. That was impressive.

Of course our stupid 15 yard penalties played a key part but that is part of the game. I thought pretty much all of the calls were correct. Rocky Long said he questions 2 calls but that leaves 9 others.

On Cal, I was so impressed with Goff. He knew we were coming...He knew he was going to get smacked...But he stayed in the pocket and hit his men. He made a couple of great throws in that game. We didn't get to him as much as I would like but we did hit him a few times. Love that QB.

I expected Cal to get yards on the ground but not run all over us. I thought the Aztecs did a pretty good job in that area.

A HUGE part of Cals success and Aztecs downfall was something I was very worried about going in. You had real good Receivers with speed. We had decent receivers with avg speed for D1 football. Your guys got open and Goff hit them. Our guys couldn't get open.

Looking back. The first half (with exception of the last minute) went pretty much like I expected it would and had hoped it would. That was the Aztec plan I mentioned last week. Control on the ground. Hit a couple of passes. With the control, keep Cals offense off the field.

With 2 minutes left in the half and us marching, I looked at my friend and said..."If we go in with a 10-7 or 14-7 lead we might win this one. And I'm ok with 7-7 at the half".

When we turned the ball over with 2 minutes left I looked at my friend and said..."We can't afford to let them score in this last 2 minutes."

It happened and I think it really changed the momentum of the game right there.
____________________________________

I don't want to talk much about the 2nd half. I am just too disappointed with what I saw from our players and the penalties. Unacceptable.

I blame players and staff on that one. But I don't blame the head coach as much as some are. No Rocky Long team has been that out of control with penalties of the type we got at Cal in his 7 years here. So my focus goes to the assistants. Yes it all falls on the Head Coach, but I know Rocky Long is not happy with what he saw out there.
___________________________________

For the rest of the year...

I don't think Cal beat a bad Aztec team. I think Cal beat a pretty good Aztec team that is slow out of the gates and working thru some problems. I expect the Aztecs to win 9 games (8 minimum) and win the MWC West. They might win the MWC. It is all up from here for the Aztecs.

I think Cal is a little better than some think. Defense wasn't bad (not great), but good enough to keep you in some games with that offense.

I think Cal goes bowling this season and finishes in the upper half of the Pac.

Again...It was a blast being in the Stadium and mingling with the Cal fans. What a day that was. And it has been great chatting here on the board (a real message board...Ha).

I can't wait for next years Aztec/Cal game. Many of us need to hook up for Beers before the game.

Really appreciate your posts... you've been fun to have around and incredibly gracious post mortem.

The one penalty I did NOT like on you guys was the one, I think on 88... Yeah, the play had gone by but that just seemed like a football play. Had that call been on Cal, i would have been pissed.

I'm really glad you enjoyed your time in Memorial. I had a couple of Aztecs folks sitting by us and we had a nice time talking. No stupid trash talking, just talking. Obviously, selfishly we're rooting for you the rest of the season, but I also always have a soft spot for SDSU!

See you next year!

Thanks for the game comments and the gracious posts all week. I'm an Aztec fan now.

The score doesn't really tell the whole story.

I was surprised at how good the SDSU defense was. Yes, I heard about it all week, but still surprised. That Munson guy could start for 1/2 the teams in the Pac and compete for a starting spot in the other 1/2. He is legit. Anytime he was in a play, it was a negative one for us.

Just bad timing for you guys. I suspect your team would have beat us against the teams we fielding in 2011, 2012, 2013, etc. You guys just ran into arguably the best QB in college fb with receivers he's been throwing to for 3 years.

You guys will compete for a title in the MWC mainly bc of the D. The O has a lot to be desired, but a dominant D can often be enough to win games.

If that's the play I'm thinking of, we were lucky not to be the ones to get flagged. We have a certain senior o-lineman who seems to think it is OK to continue drive blocking after the play and he's been called on it before. I'm all for snap to whistle but he keeps going and it's going to bite us at some point this season.

Don't know if it is the one xul is thinking of, but the one you are talking about should have been 15 on Cal. Classic case of the refs catching the retaliation.

No, the one I am thinking of was in the 2nd quarter.

Quote:

Sdsu 1-10 at Cal47 SAN DIEGO STATE drive start at 10:24.
Sdsu 1-10 at Cal47 10-CHAPMAN, Christian at QB for San Diego State.
Sdsu 1-10 at Cal47 19-PUMPHREY, Donnel rush for 21 yards to the CAL26, 1ST DOWN SDSU, out-of-bounds (95-Wilson, DeVante).
Sdsu 1-10 at Cal26 PENALTY SDSU personal foul (88-WELLS, David) 15 yards to the CAL41.

Really changed the complexion of that drive. I just caught the replay on the video board, but it looked like he threw a hard block behind the play... I don't know, like I said, had they called that on Cal I would have been annoyed.

Well, Steve, just remember that your team may get its revenge next year.
1. It will be in San Diego
2. QB Goff may have moved on the the pros
3. Next year our offense loses a LOT of talent due to graduation: our main RB (Lasco), plus WRs Treggs, Harris, Davis & Powe (and who knows, maybe Lawlor will leave early as well if he gets offered), plus our reliable punter Leininger.

This is why 2015 is our best chance to make some noise - next year we're likely to regress.

Thanks for coming by, Steve. Personally, I always enjoy the interplay with the fans from opposing teams. If they're friendly and reasonable, like you, great. If they're not, that can be fun too, sometimes. If they're simply MIA like "fans" from our arch-rival, that's a shame.

I've noticed that our bone formation this year only consists of one blocker...is it because #99 acts as 2?

It's true we lose a lot of good players for next year and I perused the SDSU football roster and learned they are really a young team. So next year we better keep improving and I hope Goff stays as we have no one to replace that I can see. Maybe Rubenzer can change things up by high percentage short passes and his running to keep the defense honest. Texas' Head Coach commented that "Goff is a statue and never runs".

Finally,Steve or anyone else on this board where do you go to read SDSU fan forum? I tried everything: Athletic Forum, Football Forum, Chat Room, Athletic Board and only came up with a few posts and some were from 2014. Anyone can help?
