It would have been a bigger win if we had put the game away by 7 or 14, but it's still a big win. For one thing, Sonny Dykes has now done something that Jeff Tedford was not able to do, which is a boost for the program and for the coach. Seven or eight wins now looks possible.
The game also showed us where we still have a ways to go. The talent level of this team is still, in my judgment, substantially below that of Tedford's best teams, particularly in terms of speed. Given the reemphasis on academics, and how far the program had fallen, the talent pool we're drawing from is probably not as deep as it used to be, in terms of who can be recruited. That means we probably have to spread the net wider, in terms of recruiting nationally, to find kids that meet the program standards academically, athletically and behaviorally. Building back up to where the program was athletically under Tedford is going to take time, I think. We need to get to a bowl and win it to give Dykes that additional breathing room, in my opinion.
