"Cheap Shot" is a phrase which has been used inappropriately in the past; it implies poverty and criminal use of firearms. Because it is a coded term with racial connotations, it should be strictly avoided.

Anyone know how long these type of things take to review by the P12? I'm assuming they'd have to decide before the next game if they were to suspend Victor, right?

On the "thug" stuff, most are aware that it's often used as code for the N word. But yeah, I highly doubt that's what the OP was implying. IMO, no harm in pointed that out, though.

Sorry but MOST people do not know it is code for the N word. SOME people understand it to be.
I have heard the word used recently in circumstances that the speaker was avoiding the use of the N word. So used Thug instead. Is that racist. Does that make use of the word racist.

If that person had said "sonofabit**" instead of "Thug" would that have made "sonofabit**" a code word for the N word?

Also I have heard the word used in situations which were not intented to be a racial slur but more a slur on the chacter of the individuals to whom the term was applied.

On one occasion the person was Latino on another that person was white.

When it is commonly known and used to refer derrogatorily primarily toward an African American (as are the N word or the C word) then use of the new T word will be racist. Until then judge not that you shall not be judged.

We are running out of letters .... (No N word, no C word, no T word) ....

Having read too much of this thread for too long, I finally have to comment. As most know here I have been around way too long, and fossilized in thought, but probably on this issue more out of tune with what is "in" in the last 20 years or so due to my lack of youth. Went to a mixed high school in the late fifties (black and white mixed, little latino) and never until this thread have I heard or associated the word "thug" as a derogatory term towards blacks. My whole life experience is that a thug was some bad ass guy, and either a feisty, fight seeking punk or a biker type. Funny, I always associated it with whites, but could imagine if the "thug" were Latino or black it would similarly apply.

So now maybe with rap and changing youth culture of which I am not attuned, the usage of the word thug is to be silenced. Sorry, not with me. I would certainly be sensitive, now that I have been informed, not to use it with racial intonations at all, but that aside, the word thug means to me as it always has. Political correctness has reached much too far.

I'm old too I also agree that this stuff can get too PC. The use of "thug" as code for the N word is a recent development and I never thought the OP meant it that way.

What will the Pac12, CP ... and Law Enforcement do? Other sports (i.e. hockey) have had players arrested, indicted, convicted for assault and battery, which is the essence of Victor's filmed crime.

I was thinking PAC would let it slide. and if anything, Petersen imposes a half to 1 quarter suspension

If the word thug can be used in common parlance without an racial overtones then use of the word by itself is not racist. Maybe it can be used in circumstances where it was clearly intended to be derogatory but the racial aspects arise from the circumstances plus the word.

The N word and the C word have no mistakable meaning. Whether whispered or said aloud. There is a difference. Use of those words is racist unless in a historical context.

My feeling exactly. I'm a firm believer in racist code words (and I even agree with Richard Sherman sometimes) but criticism of the word thug in this post seems overly sensitive. Weird tangent.

Since we know Cal/Sonny reported the play to the Pac-12, it seems entirely appropriate for fans such as those who read this board to email the conference asking for an explanation as to what action (if any) the league took. Anyone have an email address or two they'd like to share?

Is it OK if we ask them what action they took on the thug?

I am glad this is starting to snowball. Victor not only took a cheap shot on Kenny as he was helpless and helmet less on the ground. But it could have ended his season and his career. It must be dealt with strongly.
