I mean ever, since this is supposed to be the payoff year.

You win OTB.

Some mid-tier bowl should be fun in some cold place.

On the bright side. I'd be willing to bet now that we get back both Goff and Lawler next year.

Goff should leave. He has already mastered the art of running for his life. As for going to the Rose Bowl - I just want to see a game where we hold our own at the line of scrimmage.

Same result next year. I would run for the hills if I was them.

Goff's stock is dropping fast - he tends to do poorly in big games.

Big games, meaning against good opponents. Our OLine can't give him a second.

His own job isn't so secure. He wants to run up the score to demonstrate that he has a good team.

Hopefully this stops the extension talk. We should be talking about what he needs to do to keep his job.

Hey I'm disappointed but did ANYONE seriously expect the Bears to be competing for the RB 3 years after 2012 and 2 years after 2013?

Yes low level bowl very likely 8 wins still possible. That's a pretty good season all things considered.

And... If we were serious about a RB maybe we should try paying better than worst in the Pac 12 for coaches. Just saying...

Still love this team. It'll be ok.

Go Bears!!

It will be ok? How? No running game, no pass protection,no pass rush, no special teams to score points.... Not a formula for success.

You know, people say a lot of things about certain coaches who, at first glance, don't appear to be able to amount to anything. They say things like, "Oh, he's an idiot" and "he won't win here" or "he isn't championship-caliber."

What I'm trying to say is that it's too early to make that assessment. He might take California to a Rose Bowl. Then again, he might not.

Bottom line is that Sonny Dykes has done a good job so far. Will he set the world on fire? I don't know, but you cannot deny that he has done good things in Berkeley.

I think that is right and I also think that those are the goals that WIlliams has laid out for Sonny - as well as all the academic accolades in the USA today piece today.

Yup. I just think it is brutally obvious though that 8 wins is about the ceiling for the program under the current PAC-12 and under a regime that cares about academics.

Problem is that 7-8 wins a year is a satisfactory goal for the athletic department. I hear many top donors and AD staff acknowledging that Cal is "never" likely to make the RB or (lol) the playoff. If you want to know when it is going to change--it will be around 20 years from now when the lack of attendance and ESP's lead to a default on the stadium bonds. Then the idea of trying to actually have a winning program will occur to someone. If it weren't for the stadium and Haas, there would be s serious movement to leave the P12 and try to re-classify as FCS and form a conference with the Sac States and Bakersfields of the world.

Then how does Stanford do it?

I don't think it is brutally obvious at all. I think we are far too comfortable coming up with excuses why we aren't better. It is absolutely 'doable.'

No Rose Bowl since 59........ UNREAL.

Right on! The expectations of our administration and our fans are just too low.

Agreed. I find it especially maddening that Stanford can field a 9 or 10 win team and not sell out. If we had a 10 win team the fans would practically tear Memorial down.

Oh the irony that the Pac12 video in the margin is showing video of McCaffrey's record-setting game against UCLA! How can so many OTHER Pac 12 teams rise to the occasion of a big game and actually surprise and beat the favored team? When has Cal actually done this? A VERY long time.

This loss tells me everything I need to know about Sonny. He CANNOT get the team up for the big games. He cannot get them to punch above their weight. Total failure. A few more wins this season won't change this fact. I'd almost be willing to say winning out wouldn't change it, but winning out would be a COMPLETE surprise turnaround. But since he couldn't beat up on and take advantage of a thin UCLA team, he's proven that the idea of winning out is completely laughable. An impossibility.

Get ready to replace Dykes soon. He can't get it done. His yelling at the refs tonight was a sure sign that he just doesn't get it.

Let's just keep bringing in people at $2MM/year and we'll eventually get it right. Lots of hungry coaches out there willing to burn the midnight oil to find the right way to get a Cal team to be competitive.
