I admire your patience, OTB, in dealing with the variation du jour of The Script, Year 3 (blame the schedule).

Nice cherry pick of the data on UCLA.

I believe that IrishBear brought it up, but as I recall LSJU was considered by some to be a slightly better team with Elway (though the talent level was relatively close), and I think that LSJU would have gone to a bowl if they had won the Big Game.

No way were we any kind of significant underdog or overmatched from a talent perspective in that game. And we frankly outplayed them. The final play was miracle, but the outcome was not.

I agree that Cal outplayed LSJU (except on that 4th and 17 play on the last LSJU drive) and may well have had better overall talent, but I think the perception by some at the time that LSJU was the (marginally) better team, mainly due to the press that Elway received.
Certainly, there will be a mismatch in talent tomorrow, unfortunately.

Elway was obviously going to have the press, but Cal had a lot of talent. The defense had seniors Gary Plummer (long time NFL guy) and Reggie Camp (played several years in the NFL - had 14 sacks one year, and I believe was an All American), and junior Ron Rivera. Cal had a very solid defensive backfield, though none were pros. On offense Gale Gilbert would go on to have a long NFL career as a QB backup (including 5 superbowls in a row - I love that stat). John Tuggle was in the pros for a couple years before tragically dying of cancer. David Lewis was drafted as a TE and had a couple years. Harvey Salem was a tackle in the league for ten years with 126 starts.

You still feel the need to lay out the argument for the umpteenth time, bless your heart. The world needs more hopeful dreamers like you.

Cal lost 52 straight games to UCLA in basketball from 1961 until 1986, so I think that Cal should not play UCLA in basketball this season since Cal has not been competitive with UCLA in the past.

I'm a season ticket holder, and I don't leave games early but this post, unfortunately, is very accurate about where the program still needs to go. We are beating the weak teams on our schedule and building a lot of stats, but until we can beat a very good team, i.e. Stanfurd, there will always be doubts about how good we really are, lower bowl-bound or not. A complete game on both sides of the ball in which we strike fast and take control would truly be an eye-opener.

+1. And given how WSU has done since we beat them....id say we HAvE beaten a good team.

Game Day Summary:
The Soviet Bears visit Leland's Horse Farm and play the role of "Teaser Horse" - despite their efforts, they are pulled away from the Mare at the last moment and are forced to watch from the sidelines as the genetically superior Breeder Stallion finishes the job. Once again, the Horse Farm staff demonstrates how hard work does not pay off; the key to success is genetic dominance (see David Starr Jordan, William Shockley, Lewis/Fred Terman).

SDSU looks like the class of the MWC and is headed for a 9 or 10-win season.
