I admire your patience, OTB, in dealing with the variation du jour of The Script, Year 3 (blame the schedule).

Nice cherry pick of the data on UCLA.

Cal lost 52 straight games to UCLA in basketball from 1961 until 1986, so I think that Cal should not play UCLA in basketball this season since Cal has not been competitive with UCLA in the past.

there was a reason my first response was merely "sigh". My first inclination was much more in line with yours but I would have had a few other things to say and let's just say that there are things that once you say them, you can't unsay them. "Sigh" was the better choice for me at that moment.

You still feel the need to lay out the argument for the umpteenth time, bless your heart. The world needs more hopeful dreamers like you.

I believe that IrishBear brought it up, but as I recall LSJU was considered by some to be a slightly better team with Elway (though the talent level was relatively close), and I think that LSJU would have gone to a bowl if they had won the Big Game.

Elway was obviously going to have the press, but Cal had a lot of talent. The defense had seniors Gary Plummer (long time NFL guy) and Reggie Camp (played several years in the NFL - had 14 sacks one year, and I believe was an All American), and junior Ron Rivera. Cal had a very solid defensive backfield, though none were pros. On offense Gale Gilbert would go on to have a long NFL career as a QB backup (including 5 superbowls in a row - I love that stat). John Tuggle was in the pros for a couple years before tragically dying of cancer. David Lewis was drafted as a TE and had a couple years. Harvey Salem was a tackle in the league for ten years with 126 starts.

No way were we any kind of significant underdog or overmatched from a talent perspective in that game. And we frankly outplayed them. The final play was miracle, but the outcome was not.

I agree that Cal outplayed LSJU (except on that 4th and 17 play on the last LSJU drive) and may well have had better overall talent, but I think the perception by some at the time that LSJU was the (marginally) better team, mainly due to the press that Elway received.

Certainly, there will be a mismatch in talent tomorrow, unfortunately.

Good post. The spin we have to read around Dykes (ESPN's Ted ? said Dykes doing "outstanding job") is nauseating.
Yes, and love the way he keeps starters in against terrible opponents. And we're supposed to give him credit for academics - recruiting two and three star players.

Tomorrow will be telling.

Indeed. But, there was even more of a talent disparity a few weeks back when Stanford played the Cougs; and the Cardinal was quite fortunate to have won that game. Reason for hope, I suppose...

People forget that it took a furd miracle for Cal to need a miracle. Furd was around their own 10 yard line with about a minute left. They had a 4th down and 16 to go! when Elway delivered a 35 yard strike downfield. Then Cal allowed a long run and a medium FG to go ahead. But furd blew. These days, no time would have been left on the clock when Harmon kicked the FG. Cal outplayed furd, but the Elway to Tolliver combination ate Cal up.

I'm a season ticket holder, and I don't leave games early but this post, unfortunately, is very accurate about where the program still needs to go. We are beating the weak teams on our schedule and building a lot of stats, but until we can beat a very good team, i.e. Stanfurd, there will always be doubts about how good we really are, lower bowl-bound or not. A complete game on both sides of the ball in which we strike fast and take control would truly be an eye-opener.

It all comes down to our Offensive Line pass-blocking.
Protection - we win. Porous - we lose.
Protection - complete passes to set up run. Porous - stagnant offense.
Protection - we keep furd off the field. Porous - 3 & outs and drives where we need play-maker miracles to score
Protection - defense gets to rest. Porous - defense gets methodically run down

SDSU looks like the class of the MWC and is headed for a 9 or 10-win season.

Game Day Summary:

The Soviet Bears visit Leland’s Horse Farm and play the role of “Teaser Horse” - despite their efforts, they are pulled away from the Mare at the last moment and are forced to watch from the sidelines as the genetically superior Breeder Stallion finishes the job. Once again, the Horse Farm staff demonstrates how hard work does not pay off; the key to success is genetic dominance (see David Starr Jordan, William Shockley, Lewis/Fred Terman).

Nice job plagiarizing SCMindstorm's art from ten years ago.

How lazy/coddled/uncreative do you have to be to stoop so low as to copy a Trojan's homework? Asked and answered.

Today is going to be 6 in a row.
Back when we won 7 in a row - the scoreboard was always close. But did you guys ever have the lead once during that stretch?
Your starting cornerback ended up getting a superbowl ring, but was there any chance he could've caught our backup fullback in the 1999 Big Game?
Things got interesting after you stopped trying and almost closed your football program in 2000.
The 2011 game was a classic - we could've beat you by 5 touchdowns but the scoreboard was close the whole time.
The way recruiting classes are going I'd be surprised if we don't win 10 in a row.
Keep trying, Teaser Horses!

Is this moron actually proud of William Shockley's association with Stanford? Shockley was proud of his racist views and a proponent of eugenics.

You need to look more closely at SDSU.

They went 1-3 out of conference including losing to an FCS team. Only win was against San Diego.

They do not play the top three teams in the other division of their conference.

They have not played the second place team in their division.

The team with the best conference record they have played is 4-3.

Second place Nevada lost big to UA.

Third place SJSU lost to Oregon State by 14.

Basically they've played the bad teams in an awful conference. In my opinion they'd struggle to win 2 games in the Pac 12
