OT - Autoplay ads

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I know this subject waxes and wanes along with aggragate aggravation as settings and software changes. For me, the last few weeks of the autoplay of the Pac-12 videos has been particularly annoying. I am on a Mac using Safari. I have Flash and Java disabled on the site and yet those videos still play. The only way I can get them to stop is to disable Java throughout Safari--but then I lose functionality I need. AdBlock blocks too much and I've run into video playback issues when I use that plug-in. Can't BI just stop having ads that autoplay? Shouldn't audio and video be an opt-in by user rather than a gotcha bombardment?

Annoyance aside, the bigger problem is that I like to tab all the posts I want to read and then go through them one by one--if I do that Java runs on each tab and not only Safari cache but my laptop CPU is hogged and everything slows to molasses. Super aggravating.

Anything that can be done?

I use adblock plus and haven't had any of those playback issues that you mentioned. You can always selectively enable specific sites if you do run into those problems.

i'm a desktop user running FireFox. the early november release v42.0 seems made for you..

snip > Tab audio indicators. Now, when another tab in the browser is annoying you with audio, you can find it and mute the audio right on the tab.

good luck C

With AdBloc on, I still see the video. With it disabled, I don't see and hear the video. Weird.

Agree it is super annoying. Even when it is muted when I open new tabs they will play although the player shows the muted symbol.

Agree, it's also a drain on CPU and bandwidth and seriously impairs user experience on this board.

I'm a Mac user as well. My preferred browser is Firefox, and I find using the Ghostery Add-on really helps. I can can selectively shut off any of the video players that advertisers use, and turn them on if there is something that I want to see. Ghostery also blocks all of those intrusive trackers that are following your every move. I pretty much never see any video unless I want to.

I'll give it a try.

I just don't get why there isn't more outcry against the practice of autoplay video on the internet in general. Make your content interesting enough that I want to click on it. Don't force it on me. Advertising on the internet has actually now surpassed TV in its invasiveness.

I am mystified how with flash and java both blocked on the BI site that video still plays--how does that video get around the block? Can BI force their advertisers to NOT have autoplay? Especially for paid subscribers.

Ahhhhhhh. Happy happy relief. I gave AdBlock another try. After some adjustments (that video refused to die) it's now gone. So still and quiet. Just the peaceful tranquil bickering of Cal fans now the way the internet is supposed to be.

It's AdChoices. All the sites I see that logo are quickly becoming trash.

It's ok. If web sites are mostly junk now, it frees up my time to read books and watch cat videos.

Can't check right now, on mobile, but there's an option to selectively disable the ads that get through by clicking on them. Once you clear them out, they never pop up again. Click on the icon for the options.
