How does Dykes really get fired?

He won't get canned (sadly) and the reason is that you don't go from the dumpster fire to 6 (and counting) wins in 3 years at Cal and get canned. Now again, some of those wins (grambling) should be discounted (I would point out that they are 8-2 - good for them!).

The problem is that future and the challenge that by extending him now it will make the inevitable (and it is inevitable) buy out that much more costly.

Why is the choice between firing and extension? He's got 2 years left on his existing contract. Can't Williams say "win next year, and we'll discuss an extension then"?

Query: if Dykes drops the TFS, how does that impact your views?

If Dykes drops the TFS, gets 3 good offensive coaches (RB, WR and OC), gets a good new DL coach who actually recruits, starts landing some decent linemen on O and D for the 2016 class and stops overstocking at WR to the detriment of the roster depth at other posiitions than that would impact my views.

In other words...NO

I agree that an offensive overhaul is what's needed. I like the direction Sonny has taken the program, and I like what Kaufman has done to the D. But I think the TFS has hit a wall, and the O Line needs some drastic changes (what's Michalczik doing these days??), and the WR's need a position coach. That would be ideal...but extremely unlikely.

This is really our only hope. Maybe Mike Williams is really a sneaky bastard who (as an ex wrestler) is disgusted with our soft, ineffective approach to football and is working behind the scenes to raise enough money to hire a competitive coaching staff (not just a head coach). Ok, I can dream can't I?

Or Mike Williams wants to extend Dykes because, regardless of his abilities, he would rather extend than actually go to work and do his job finding the right coach for Cal. After all, it is the holidays and he probably wants some time off.

Which of these coaches will be tasked with standing next to Sonny during games and reminding him that his job is to keep fighting until the clock hits 0:00? Or do we need to create a new staff position for this particular purpose? Maybe we get Tony Robbins on the sidelines instead of Adam Duritz?

Tough year to be in the market for a new coach. Look at the jobs that are open or soon to be... Southern Cal, LSU (likely), Missouri, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, U. of Miami, Maryland, Illinois, Syracuse, Central Florida and Virginia (likely), with a couple more good jobs to open as coaches jump ship for greener pastures. Lot of dominoes could fall, i.e. Jimbo Fisher takes the LSU job...

This off-season will certainly be seller's market. Doesn't seem like that's something Cal has the will or the $$$ to jump in to...

We lost a WR coach in the offseason due to off-field issues, I think that will be taken care of regardless. The TFS was decent last year, I am not so sure it fell off so suddenly just because the entire conference got smarter than us or because we are working with a patchwork OL that would barely get it done in the Mountain West. After UCLA we had to change the pass protection because even 3-man rushes were getting to Goff, although we starting seeing this back at Washington.

We're going to need a lot of these so called "Get back" coaches. The "Get back" coach is the guy who keeps players and coaches from inching farther and farther out on the field. I've noticed we also have a "Settle down Sonny" coach who has to restrain our head coach multiple times per game when he's blowing an o-ring at the officials. Now we'll need a "Balls" coach that will quietly say to Sonny at crucial times in the game "Balls, Sonny, show some balls".

Theoretically yes, but the conventional wisdom is that it becomes difficult to recruit quality talent because they know the recruiting coach probably won't be around.

..and you can't hire just anyone at Cal. You have to find someone that realizes the academics have to be taken seriously.

This doesn't help, but I'll point it out: Northwestern and Stanford (both private schools, but in our league academically) both hired winning coaches that were alumni. They love the programs. You can now put Harbaugh in Michigan in that category. Ron Rivera would be the obvious choice, but he's otherwise occupied at the moment. Is there another ex-Golden Bear that is having success in the college, pro, or even high school ranks as an assistant or a head coach?

He is currently 0-9 (corrected) against in-state opponents, and in his 3rd year has a bowl team. But when does the administration finally cut him lose? If we crash out this year to 6-7, does the extension go out the window along with him? If not, when?

Next year when he is 0-16 against in-state opponents?

Next year when we have a losing season?

Maybe he get a few more years to do the same?

Or does he get to stick around as long as our guys graduate, regardless of on-field performance?

Three wins and some diplomas keeps him employed.

He's our guy.

You hit on one really good point.
IMO the problems with the OLine are the most important.
Cal so often drives down field to the 10-7-5-3 yardline and has difficulty scoring a TD. In that territory it is difficult to complete passes because the field is so compressed. What is needed in those situations is a good OLine that can open holes for the running backs.
Sonny has had to keep one of the receivers back next to Goff to provide him protection against even a 3-man rush.
Cal's running game is not as productive as expected (again, because of poor Oline blocking).

I don't understand the criticism of TF in view of the number of yards that Cal has been able to put up even against a dominant defense like stanfurd has.
When the Cal Offense starts rocking and rolling it is a thing of beauty (until we get within the 10 yard line).

Dykes will be fired if attendance falls off. At Cal, that means season ticket sales needs to fall off because day of game ticket sales have been historically weak with few exceptions.

I've already decided that I will not renew my season tickets. If you complain about Dykes but renew next year you've given up your power, no matter how small that power may seem.

After 36 years of buying season tickets, I'm not renewing.

Sorry to hear that you will not be renewing season tix.
I have been buying mine since I was a Freshman -- 53 years ago.

I attend games to support the team NOT to support the coach (regardless whether I like the coach or not).
More important, attending a game in person is something that I LOVE to do.
If the game is within driving distance I MUST be there in person (watching a televised game is not enough).
If Cal wins a game that I attend in person, I get a "high" that lasts until the next game. If Cal loses a game that I attend in person I get over it by Monday. One win outweighs 4 losses.

If I were to refuse to renew my season tix I would be hurting myself more than I would be hurting the Cal Coach.

Besides, if I want to send a message that I hate how a coach is doing, I would do that directly and unequivocally. I do not take some action that could be misunderstood.
If I fail to renew my tix I could be dead or could be having financial problems or could have moved out of State. How is the ATO is supposed to know what my absence means (assuming the ATO notices it at all).

When Cal scheduled a "home" game at Levi Stadium I sent a written message to the ATO and BearBacker and followed up with a telephone call and told them clearly that I was cutting my BearBacker donation for the following year in half BECAUSE the Oregon game had been scheduled at Levi Stadium.
That made my message clear and I saved me some money and yet I did not have to give up my Cal in-person home games.

People who are not renewing because they've lost confidence in Dykes should specifically tell the ATO that. They should also cut their academic contributions to the school, and communicate that they're doing so because support for football, in terms of coaching salaries, for example, is insufficient. I will probably renew, because I go with my father, and it's a family thing. Candidly, I probably wouldn't review if I knew most of the home games would be at night.
Strykur

I always renew since I am Young Alumni and will be for several more years, but after that ends I am done unless we have a major reversal of trends at the moment. There may be several more years of decent attendance but once this current generation of Young Alumni begin to thin out, attendance will probably drop off substantially.

Oh, you can be sure that I will tell the Athletic Director, the Chancellor, and a few others why I will not be renewing. It isn't just about Dykes, although that solidified it.

I'm glad that you find value in attending Cal games. I used to feel that way until I came to understand that I was being taken for granted, despite all of the missives thanking me for my contributions to Cal Athletics. Actions speak very loud, indeed.
