Wow!!! Thought they couldn't resist going after a big name.

I agree...WOW!!! This just seems so Cal like. Seems like a decent coach and guy but I can't imagine he's the best candidate and why wouldn't you go after the best? Must be the same reason as why Penn St. hired Sandy. Let's be safe for now after the **** storms.

So Cal like? I guess I will hold off on my opinion of that until Sonny beats his rival, and ends up in the Pac-12 Championship game.
I was hoping for recruiting disruption for $C-this adds to the continuity in that area. I also was hoping that Cal might make a move on some of the SC assistants(especially defense) because they would be lame ducks-I guess that isn't happening either, unless they take a position guy and make him D-Coordinator.

Like the "Cal like" AD hire. Can't believe the best AD available was our assistant AD taking job he admittedly wasn't sure he wanted.
Like the "Cal like" Tom Holmoe hire. Can't believe the best coaching candidate was our awful DC.
Those "Cal like" hires.

With the way the players rallied around Helton and the tales that the players were unhappy with Helton not getting the head coach position after his last interim tenure I don't think USC had a lot of choice.
Will be interesting to see if Helton can keep the team winning now. Next season the team probably won't feel like they are playing for his job and they might not be as "up" as they were in the 2nd half of this season.

Look at the PAC-12 South, it's not like there are other juggernauts competing for the title anytime soon, Helton just needs to win LA and he will be a game from Roses every single year.

I wonder if he's canned after a blow out loss in the championship game

I'm sure you're right and the players played a huge role in this. Don't know if that is a good way to make your most important AD hire though. It's SC, however. I could coach that team to 8 wins. Ok, maybe 4 wins.

Frankly this is a good move by U$C. Trying to re-capture and ride the Pete Carroll years was weak, lazy and short-sighted. With the resources U$C puts into FB, the talent they recruit and no drama to distract, $C could be formidable with a coach who isn't an idiot.
Regarding history, U$C only wins without non-$C types...and Irish Catholic coaches: McKay, Robinson and Carroll. And two of those guys were likely born in Pinkoville, Bagdad by the Bay.

I also love how a couple news articles I came across also used the term "permanent head coach". So I guess that means USC is never firing Helton, nor is he leaving. Awesome.
