Wow!!! Thought they couldn't resist going after a big name.

I agree...WOW!!! This just seems so Cal like. Seems like a decent coach and guy but I can't imagine he's the best candidate and why wouldn't you go after the best? Must be the same reason as why Penn St. hired Sandy. Let's be safe for now after the **** storms.

So Cal like? I guess I will hold off on my opinion of that until Sonny beats his rival, and ends up in the Pac-12 Championship game.
I was hoping for recruiting disruption for $C-this adds to the continuity in that area. I also was hoping that Cal might make a move on some of the SC assistants(especially defense) because they would be lame ducks-I guess that isn't happening either, unless they take a position guy and make him D-Coordinator.

Must be slim pickings in the HC supply market.

Like the "Cal like" AD hire. Can't believe the best AD available was our assistant AD taking job he admittedly wasn't sure he wanted.
Like the "Cal like" Tom Holmoe hire. Can't believe the best coaching candidate was our awful DC.
Those "Cal like" hires.

I wasn't clear. I know folks will take offense when I take a shot at Cal. No harm.

Let's hope they didn't back-in to a HOF coach like they did with Petey.

With the way the players rallied around Helton and the tales that the players were unhappy with Helton not getting the head coach position after his last interim tenure I don't think USC had a lot of choice.

Will be interesting to see if Helton can keep the team winning now. Next season the team probably won't feel like they are playing for his job and they might not be as "up" as they were in the 2nd half of this season.

I'm sure you're right and the players played a huge role in this. Don't know if that is a good way to make your most important AD hire though. It's SC, however. I could coach that team to 8 wins. Ok, maybe 4 wins.

Look at the PAC-12 South, it's not like there are other juggernauts competing for the title anytime soon, Helton just needs to win LA and he will be a game from Roses every single year.

That's good for us. Their best coaches have not been from the SC family:

John Mckay
John Robinson
Pete (Cheat) Carroll

Are you serious?

Utah, UCLA, and USC were all good this year and not to mention USC also had Oregon, ND, & Stanford on the schedule

Not allowed on the bus if he loses in a blowout. Haden has his standards.

It's going to get ugly down there after furd beats them 30-0. Cue everyone saying "This is who we got?"

This is interesting, not even USC sees good candidates in today's market.

You really have to hope Sonny is the real deal instead of starting over right now.

Good for us as it takes one opening off the table if we end up having to hire a new coach.

Frankly this is a good move by U$C. Trying to re-capture and ride the Pete Carroll years was weak, lazy and short-sighted. With the resources U$C puts into FB, the talent they recruit and no drama to distract, $C could be formidable with a coach who isn't an idiot.

Regarding history, U$C only wins with non-$C types...and Irish Catholic coaches: McKay, Robinson and Carroll. And two of those guys were likely born in Pinkoville, Bagdad by the Bay.

For reference, Cal players campaigned for Bozeman's hire. Not usually a wise move to let the players choose the coach.

Don't understand the timing. As others have noted, what if 'SC shits the bed vs LSJU? Another week also freezes the coaching carousel for everyone else. Not like Helton was going to bail or they would lose their entire recruiting class in the next week.

I also love how a couple news articles I came across also used the term "permanent head coach". So I guess that means USC is never firing Helton, nor is he leaving. Awesome.

This is a good hire for USC. I was at Saturday's game. Packed house. Very few Ruins fans present. What SC needs most at this point is stability. The post-Carroll years were an absolute **** show, and Helton is continuing to recruit a lot of great talent. He seems like a guy who fits in the SC Culture which is sacrosanct, and he also seems like a guy who knows how to get things done and stay under the radar, which is a really good thing for them at the moment. I'm just waiting to see how long Mora stays at fUCLA. He seems like a total hot-head, and a lot of the faithful think he's taken the program to the 3 yard line, but can't punch it in. On the other hand Rosen is the real deal. Very interesting, however, that he showed his age when SC was able to bring the pressure. I'm sure he'll get over that in the next year or so, and his mobility is pretty amazing considering he also has a gun.

I was rooting for USC vs ucla for this very reason. A win vs. ucla could motivate the ucla powers-that-be to remove the "interim" from his title and would keep usc from offering Kelley or some other more successful coach.

Shrewd move by Haden, his first as AD.

They're going Furd and calling the position the John Robinson Memorial Head Coach in Perpetuity.

I'm surprised, too. I'm guessing they examined him closely the past few months, with a skeptical eye, and liked what they saw.
