Until he wins. As someone once said, "Winning is the ultimate deodorant." If we go 8-4 or better next year, all Sonny's machinations will be forgotten. Then the question will be, "Can we pay him enough to keep him from leaving?" You have to divorce yourself from any ideas about what should be the inherent value of a football coach. What matters is what the market says he's worth, and whether you agree and want to pay it or not.

Anyone here who doesn't see the aim of establishing market value to an employer probably has never negotiated salary on the job, if you haven't done it then you are a sucker. If Dykes had signed the extension as-is by Williams early on, then next year crashed out to under .500, then I doubt anybody here would care that Dykes was a man of "integrity" and whatnot for wanting to stick with us on our terms, we would be wanting to send his ass out on a rail anyway. With this extension however, I think Dykes understands the expectations here, whether or not Goff leaves. Not to say we shouldn't be annoyed with a shitty year next year, but the ante has been upped.

Correct. It's like all the focus that's put on the 1-11 season. I get that people were pissed, but if he had one three or four games, versus one, the losses had been blowouts like most of the losses were, I don't think that would have changed the very mixed feelings the fan base has about Sonny now. Although I don't like the 7-win standard, especially not knowing the buyout terms, at least the minimum bar Sonny has to achieve is clear. There's some value in clarity going forward.

What a bunch of coach speak gobbledygook...nothing whatsoever inaccurate in the reporting.

In other press conference news:

"Fresh off renewing my vows to my wife of 3 years, that will keep committed to her through the 2019 season, CalGrad95 spoke with media Friday afternoon for the first time since Cal's Nov. 28 win over Arizona State.

I admitted that the reports that I was interested in having an affair with other women including those on the the Ashley Madison site, which The Chronicle confirmed I had a profile with last Tuesday made me "a little bit uncomfortable."

"A lot of the stuff that came out was not right," CalGrad95 said. "It was a lot of speculation, a lot of inaccuracies. But again, the most important thing is I'm excited about renewing my marriage vows and all that stuff that's in front of us."

When asked what was misreported, CalGrad95 said, "A lot of stuff. I'm not going to get into it specifically, but a lot of stuff."

/sarcasm

Dykes said jack about what happened. Talk about non-speak and vague. I could say there were lies about me, but then again, I could also be talking about my agents talking points with the media. I don't think the alums/donors will be that forgiving.

What Sonny did is what most people in his situation do.
Deny the rumors in general terms.
Don't get caught up in denial of specific matters otherwise (i) there is an implied admission of those parts that are not expressly denied and (ii) you have to support your specific denials and (iii) you may have to face "gotcha" evidence.
After you have made your general denials don't go back to explain. Just Move On.

Safe move. Smart move.

Checking the out of town scoreboard:

Mizzou 1 Sonny 0 (final, overtime)
UVa 1 Sonny 0
Memphis 1 Sonny 0
Maryland 1 Sonny 0
Dieter 1 BI 1 (called on account of rain)
Sonny 1 Dieter 0 (Dieter is now mentally checked out of all of our consciousness)
Sonny 1 MW 0
UT 1 (OC hiring) TFS 1 (actual game)
Powerhouse Pac-12 teams 12 Sonny 0
Sonny 2 Washington Pac-12 schools 0

Before people get bent out of shape, just joking.

Of course winning solves most everything. If he wins I WANT HIM BACK. What I'm saying is that he's just made winning tougher because his players now have some doubt about his 'buy-in'. Every coach recruiting against him will point out that he wanted to leave Cal. Every time he slips up fans will remember this and be quicker with the boos (until enough time has passed or he wins). It all gets tougher. I guess I have no problem testing the market. I say 'I guess' because I did stay in the same job for 30 years until I was fired. I understand other folks want to keep moving, keep making more money, etc. It's just that Sonny's shopping became very public and it doesn't look good and there is absolutely no benefit to Cal football that it did. But what are you going to do? He's back and I hope he/we win.
