“A lot of the stuff that came out was not right,” Dykes said. “It was a lot of speculation, a lot of inaccuracies. But again, the most important thing is I’m excited about the bowl game and playing against Air Force and all that stuff that’s in front of us.”

When asked what was misreported, he said, “A lot of stuff. I'm not going to get into it specifically, but a lot of stuff."

Wow. Lonny Powell a 4* recruit is not coming back because he feels he can't crack the 4-man rotation.
What does this tell us about relying on stars to predict the best players,

In all due respect. Lonny Powell is and was a stud. He was a four star on both sides of the ball (as far as im concerned). Should of been allowed to play defense but Sonny refused.

Why would you want a 5'9", 210 lb. quitter to play linebacker? You keep beating this dead horse, but it just makes you sound like a bitter idiot. How do you know Kaufman didn't want him because he is undersized and slow?

The article didn't say that's why he left the team. The number of people on the depth chart was just a comment by the article writer. BTW - Tre Watson and Khalfani were both 4*, possibly 1-2 in the rotation next year, so that tells me that stars are pretty good at predicting best players.

Really? Watson and Khalfani step up to a new level and keep improving, but Powell leaves.
Dozier? Hope he can step up but not looking like a 4* superstar yet.
Erik Brown is gone also, 4* WR ...
but all the stars that didn't make it is on the coaches, right? Or maybe not.

You read into "stars" whatever makes you feel giddy; ignore those situations that don't.

Sorry but first stat book assigned, non-text, was How To Lie With Statistics, and lecture based on "Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics".
Blue book written test on the book and lecture a week later.
Got an A for understanding the use and misuse, sense and nonsense, of Statistics.

So, NO ... understand stat (including correlations, descriptive vs sampling) but that's different from being a f "fan" of stat.
Averages (mean) without SD is almost meaningless, as well as no shape of the "average" curve (kurtosis), and I don't "assume" it's bell-shaped.

If you put your "faith" in stat, you're a prime candidate for a Ponzi scheme.

It tells us that this coaching staff believes in playing the best players and true competition. And sometimes a 4 or even 5 star will not cut it.

Best of luck to Powell.

Read your link with interest. When finished I was surprised how the Comical defined each and every player and his injuries and whether or not they would play in the bowl game. Player by player run down. We only get that in bits and pieces over time and in multiple links on Bear Insider. It is as if all is either "top secret" or a "potential law suit in the making". Don't get it.

Dykes was asked specific questions which named players.
He responded: Yes, No, Maybe ... so your "either..or": "top secret" or "lawsuit" is in Your mind,

Pretty presumptuous to assume he left because he "couldn't crack the rotation" and label him a quitter. It's safe to say most guys who leave during the first year aren't playing time related but more likely "program fit" or something along those lines.

And to deny that the ratings are at all indicative, broadly speaking, of potential future success is laughable. You can go ahead and cite as many 2* guys who made it and as many 5* guys who didn't but proportionally speaking, a lot more guys rated highly find success. Of course there isn't a perfect, 1 to 1 relationship but to believe stars don't have any relationship with likelihood of football success is silly.

I agree with this completely.

I'm relatively scared of our recruiting performance this year. We're a team "on the upswing", headed to a bowl, new student workout center, and yet our recruiting is no better than the other 2 Sonny Dykes years. We blamed those on bad on-field record, which isn't the case this year.

We're losing Goff & most of our wide receivers, have no all-league defenders, and have a coach now locked into a long-term contract.

If I'm Sonny, I take that assistant pay $$$ and clean house. I know it sounds jerky, but we need younger, more aggressive recruiters. Preferably ones with a touch of NFL experience. It's hard to undervalue the impact of an Adrian Klemm or Tee Martin or Scott Frost. We have none of those.

I think we'll have to settle into being more like a Vanderbilt football team (minus the raping, hopefully).

What a bunch of coach speak gobbledygook...nothing whatsoever inaccurate in the reporting.

In other press conference news:

"Fresh off renewing my vows to my wife of 3 years, that will keep committed to her through the 2019 season, CalGrad95 spoke with media Friday afternoon for the first time since Cal's Nov. 28 win over Arizona State.

I admitted that the reports that I was interested in having an affair with other women including those on the the Ashley Madison site, which The Chronicle confirmed I had a profile with last Tuesday made me "a little bit uncomfortable."

"A lot of the stuff that came out was not right," CalGrad95 said. "It was a lot of speculation, a lot of inaccuracies. But again, the most important thing is I'm excited about renewing my marriage vows and all that stuff that's in front of us."

When asked what was misreported, CalGrad95 said, "A lot of stuff. I'm not going to get into it specifically, but a lot of stuff."

that you still have no idea if it's even related to his athletic ability, or if it's academic-related.

also, I imagine it would've been difficult for Erik Brown to immediately get into the rotation after not being to practice due to class issues.

Actually the metaphor is NOT spot on. Taking a coaching job is NOT like getting married. As John Madden once said: all coaches are going to get fired eventually unless you are lucky enough to retire first. (or words to that effect).
How many marriage vows read: "Until death do us part or we get divorced."

This is far closer to spot on. Coaching is a job and checking the market is a business decision. I don't have much respect for those for whom marriage is a business.

Really poor analogy. Followed, of course, by the self congratulation. How special.

You are right. But once you are a coach that (publicly) shops around after seasons how much meaning do things like the team buy-in ranking charts have? Even though college players know what's going on how fired up can you be 'buying in' to a coach who was one 'yes' away from leaving your team? Sonny's relationship is now permanently changed with his Cal team, their fans and it's administration and not in a positive way.

Until he wins. As someone once said, "Winning is the ultimate deodorant." If we go 8-4 or better next year, all Sonny's machinations will be forgotten. Then the question will be, "Can we pay him enough to keep him from leaving?" You have to divorce yourself from any ideas about what should be the inherent value of a football coach. What matters is what the market says he's worth, and whether you agree and want to pay it or not.
