Doesn't the last one go under "no brainer" not "uncomfortable?" That whole sentence was very funny...

Theoretically the wife could access my BI account, so my official answer is "No, not a no brainer. It would be very uncomfortable, especially for poor Kate."

Cal beat San Diego State--by a lot. San Diego State beat Air Force. The chance of Cal losing to Air Force is about the same as the chance of Kate Beckinsale and Scarlett Johansson calling me after the game and begging for a threesome. There's a chance. If the OP (heartofthebear) is so convinced that AF will win or cover the spread he should bet money on the game and use the winnings to pay his parents rent for his room in their basement (where he can read the Elders of Zion and continue to spew anti-semitic filth).

That's why they play the game ... and if AFA wins, say hello to Kate and Scarlett for all of us :p

High for Tuesday is now projected at 55. Monday is 41 so luckily we're missing that. Today of course it's 79. Crazy stuff. Just got an email from Cal warning it's going to be cold at the game and that they'd cancelled today's rally at Sundance Square due to weather.

This should be good. If there's one thing our fan base is more excited talking about than burritos it's the weather. Much fodder coming soon. I plan to post hourly weather reports as soon as I arrive on Monday.

Name one team outside of Michigan State that played AFA and wouldn't trade linebackers with us. I'm not saying it's not cause for concern, everything is always a cause for concern when you have a mediocre team, but we should have some confidence in our guys and our staff. We have far more talent across the board and 3 weeks to prepare for this.

And heart, you are completely ignoring the other big matchup. How are they going to match up with Goff? Who on their team can run with Treggs, Davis, Hansen? What are they going to do when Khalfani gets outside in space? We could score 50.

First of all Air Force has a decent pass defense with 2 DBs amongst leaders but I guess I can't say that because those are stats that don't take into consideration the holy SOS. They also have a decent overall defense.

I would say both Navy and SDS would not trade their group of LBs for our depleted group of LBs.

Consider this: Our SOS does not necessarily make us better prepared for the game. The SOS is part of why we are beat up on D. When you play in the pac-12, you are beat up at the end of the season. Air Force is much healthier.

Also: We keep expecting Cal to drop 50, but it's only happened once versus FBS opponent this year and pretty much everybody dropped 50 on OSU this year.

So heart - what do you think now about your prognosis? I know you are happy with the result and felt like poking at the bear.

My prediction faired pretty well - relatively comfortable dougle-digit win. However, I will say the defense was a little disappointing and HOTB's comments on that side of the ball were pretty accurate. If not for the touchback fumble Air Force puts up over 40 points on us and that is not good, I don't care if it is a unique offense.

I feel like our offense could have put up 70 points if it needed to though.

Absolutely. Goff had 6 TD passes in the 3rd quarter. Lawler said "I told the coaches we can just run by these guys, and we did." We basically ran out the clock for the last 15 minutes. We scored as many points as we needed.

What is amazing is that it only took us 11:27 TOTAL to score 7 TD's! One took almost 4 minutes and another took almost 3 minutes. The others took a little over 1 minute or less.

I guess this is what it felt like to be USC or UCLA fans against us, we couldn;t generate any pass rush and their QBs torched us... Hope that it will change next year, we've got to get better in the trenches to get to postseason next year with a new QB.

I don't think I was that far off. Generally speaking, I was right about the defense and the offense may have been aided by Boneheaded's targeting hit on Treggs.

I was very impressed with the passing game and Goff's draft status increased based on these last 2 games.

Clearly the outgoing seniors and juniors wanted to go out with 8 wins and a legacy. We will miss them. It would have been something had Cal done that against an in state rival or Oregon.

Basically I said that Cal would have to win on offense and that is what happened.
I said that AF would make some long passes on Cal and that is what happened.
I thought Cal would be better on STs and that is what happened.

However, the defense did a good job of being opportunistic and getting turnovers.
That was key.

You weren't that far off at all. Our defense had a few more 3 and outs than I thought, but we certainly had trouble stopping them consistently. The fumble, touchback and Rubenzer's interception helped.

I think you were pretty far off in that you called this a bad matchup for Cal when in fact it was a perfect matchup. We completely outclassed them athletically. They had no answers for our offense unless you call praying for unforced errors to be an answer. But for those unforced errors we score in the 70's.

Your central premise of looking at season stats and ignoring SOS was obviously in error. You said that both teams had a good offense but only AFA had a good defense. Certainly didn't appear that way in the game I saw.

You were right that we weren't able to shut them down completely on offense but I don't know if I would look purely to our LB unit as the reason for that or the fact that this was a typical Sonny Dykes barn burner basketball game.

The only chance AFA had to beat us is if we completely shat the bed or weren't ready to play - essentially if our coaches equated to negative 3 TDs.

I like you heart and appreciate your thoughtful posting history but this was a huge miss and a prime example of using statistics without appropriate context.

If Cal and AFA were to play 10 games, Cal would win all 10 by an increasing margin. Air Force was limited in what they could do offensively and Cal's D would have become much more accustomed to it in time. Yet AFA could not stop the Cal offense. Easily could have been 60 or 70 points. One stupid fake field goal and 2 other field goals converted would be in the 70's.

If their best DB didnt get ejected in the opening minutes, then it may have been different, especially regarding the long throws. Given that Heart mentioned their two good DBs as a key to his analysis, I think it is odd that you would claim he was off base.

Take away that ejection and his analysis might have been pretty good.

Also, FWIW, even our own radio personalities had the same analysis pregame. Lack of LB depth for us, good DB's who play aggressively for them.

^^^ That ejection hurt AFA quite a bit. On Cal's side it's like if the best LB went out right away and AFA started running right at the replacement. Might not pay off immediately but eventually it would.

really it was that ejection, and that fortunate fumble into the end zone that made this game a blowout.

but is it a "good matchup" for Air Force, or just Cal's usual defense? I think the latter.
Unit2Sucks
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I guess I'm not sure what would make for a better matchup for us out of the available mid tier bowl teams. I'd rather play AFA than SD State for example.

I think AFA was probably the third easiest team on our schedule after OSU and Grambling. Sure we had weaknesses at LB this game but we have weaknesses all over the field on defense against good teams. We had an overwhelming advantage on offense regardless of whether their safety goes down or not. Easily the worse secondary we faced all year so I'm not sure one extra all MWC safety would allow them to hold us down.
Vandalus
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm sorry, they didn't have one corner or safety that could run with our guys. If we only had one plus receiver I could see this analysis being on target. As it was, they tried to blitz and play man (just like asu) except they didn't have the back end athletes to stay with any of our guys while in man coverage. They played to their scheme (pressure) and when it didn't work they were doomed.

It wasn't like guys weren't open for those first 3-4 deep passes before he got kicked out of the game. He's one safety, he can't cover the entire field. He's not going to stop the sideline throws. He's not going to stop the linebackers filling in on the play action fake in our RPO game which resulted in at least 3 td's on slants.

It's lazy analysis to postulate that their one hard hitting safety was somehow going to turn the tide of the game in the backend. I'm not buying it.

It was late in the game, but I did admit that Cal was better after watching the AFA vs. SDS game on replay. Air force looked pretty slow defensively.

"Without that thread, we'd be 7-6 with a depressing long flight home," said Dykes. "To whomever came up with that thread, thank you."

I don't take strong positions.
I take minority positions.
There is a difference.

I never said Cal would lose.
I never said Cal didn't have a good match up on offense.

I said Cal would have to win with offense and that Air Force had a good defense.

That is not a strong position.
What happened was that folks took strong exception to my moderate position.
