I'm not a huge fan of that album either but Keef maintains it is the Stones best album and some of Mick Taylor's finest slide guitar work is on it. I like Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and Get Yer Ya Yas Out.

Ok, OP... Give it up, turn it loose.

If I was stranded on a desert island and could only listen to one artist, it'd be The Godfather of Soul. You old crackers can keep the Stones.

1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
That's a tough one because the list sounds subjective, unlike sales.

I'm gonna guess Pink Floyd is one of them.

When do we get the answer, 'cause the urge to cheat is strong.

I am a dinosaur who stills buys CDs. Soul Brother # 1's Greatest Hits Album is awesome. But I find myself listening to Al Green's Greatest Hits more often. Love and Happiness has to be one of the better songs of all time. The organ player on that song was unreal.

Good call. Al Green is one of the all time greats. Bill Withers greatest hits has got to be up there too, along with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes.

Couldn't agree more. Heard Ain't No Sunshine playing in my head just reading your post. Interesting stories about him in the media within the last year.

8 albums? That's a lot more than most people produce. Is that Too Short?

First with 8 is not the Flamin Groovies, Flaming Lips, Fever Tree, Free, The Fuggs, Frigid Pink, Funk Inc or even the Foo Fighters. Real rare to have 8 great albums. Narrows the field you might say. When he died recently, I had not ever, once, heard one of his albums start to finish. Last week I listened to Ziggy Stardust and Hunky Dory. Pretty good. Number one with eight albums for this book - David Bowie. Seven - Dylan, Fab Four, Neil Young.

The Band. Bunch of kick ass Canadian rock n rollers (plus Levon) who worshiped Southern roots music then gave it a new twist.

Yeah it's overrated, but there is still some quality to nearly everything the Stones did from 1965 to Tattoo You, that's a really impressive bit of longevity for a rock and roll band.

Critics loved Bowie because there was a lot of artifice and he kept reinventing himself. An interesting performer but how many of you have 8 David Bowie albums? I'm going on 3,

The proof is in the pudding. The last several cuts on his greatest hits double album markedly tail off in quality--but that first disc is pretty solid. Guns and Roses Greatest Hits pretty much shoots its wad after 5 tracks and Red Hot Chili Peppers Greatest Hits gets a bit deeper. Stones, Doors, Beatles, Led Zep, and Who can go for miles. Pearl Jam's GH is two pretty solid discs.

With Pearl Jam it's pretty much Alive only.

Bowie fans rate everything he did as great, but he did have some clunkers like Lodger from 1979:

Reminds me of my Chicago's Greatest Hits CD. First disc is incredible but I threw the second one out years ago.

Exile is BY FAR the best stones album. BY FAR!!!

I think the stones are clearly the answer to this, by the way. The best stretch from the 65 to 83. The albums from 68 to 78 (eight of them) would be on the list.

You are probably right about it being the Stones. They are overrated in my book. Yes, they have a good number of great songs, but they produced a lot of material and most of it I have no interest in. Yes, I understand I am probably in the minority on that.

It really annoys me when they talk about them playing blues music. To me, they sound like what a white person that's never been around black people thinks blues music sounds like. Sort of like Jesse Jaymes rap song, "Shake It Like A White Girl" (you should look him up, he's a billionaire now). To me, Rolling Stones are the rock music equivalent of "Shake It Like A White Girl". You want to hear amazing blues music from a 60's rocker? Get the Jimi Hendrix Blues compilation.

Pearl Jam Ten is one of the great all time albums. You can't name a bad track. Vs. is also very good. Vitalogy is hit-and-miss and it goes downhill from there. The Pearl Jam 20 documentary has a great segment that kind of reveals (if you're paying attention) the music quality goes downhill over time as Eddie Vedder takes over songwriting duties from Stone Gossard (though Vedder always wrote the lyrics).

This is exactly how I feel. They have maybe five or six songs I would listen to regularly, and in fact I think Gimme Shelter is the single greatest rock recording ever made. It's a frickin' masterpiece. But outside of a few songs, I have no interest in them.

That's funny, this is also the only Stones album I own, although I probably like it a little better than you. Happy is probably my favorite from this album, and Mick's not even singing it.

Looking back, I probably avoided the Stones because when I was a freshman in high school, "Miss You" was the big song, and I can't stand that song. That probably soured me on exploring their music.

But you have to give them this much...Mick Taylor's solo on this kind of hits it out of the park as does Keef and Mick's dueling guitars:

Same here. It was a great issue of debate amongst my friends growing up. I've always preferred The Who.

Pearl Jam (especially Eddie Vedder's voice) make me want to curl up and die.

dajo9;842644133 said:

Until Bowie passed I had no idea how many albums he made. That's a lot of songs nobody has any interest in hearing. He has a hit rate something like a 2-star college recruit.

My theory being not all popular songs are any good, but most really good songs do achieve some level of popularity.

Flame away. . .

Of course this stuff is all subjective, but I think there's a lot of amazing music that never becomes popular. Most of Bowie's big hits in the 80's are trash, imo. However, I really like his earlier stuff on Hunky Dory, Low, Aladdin Sane etc., which I'm guessing were not very popular.
