Beatles, Dylan, Bruce, and I'm gonna throw in The Band because critics loved them and they were good

I'd make my same comment about the Stones. I wanted to deepen my knowledge of the Stones beyond just what is played on classic rock stations so 6 months ago I bought Exile on Main Street. What a lousy album. The only song worth listening to is Tumbling Dice.

Vin Scully loves that album

Ok, OP... Give it up, turn it loose.
If I was stranded on a desert island and could only listen to one artist, it'd be The Godfather of Soul. You old crackers can keep the Stones.

I am a dinosaur who stills buys CDs. Soul Brother # 1's Greatest Hits Album is awesome. But I find myself listening to Al Green's Greatest Hits more often. Love and Happiness has to be one of the better songs of all time. The organ player on that song was unreal.

Good call. Al Green is one of the all time greats. Bill Withers greatest hits has got to be up there too, along with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes.

Couldn't agree more. Heard Ain't No Sunshine playing in my head just reading your post. Interesting stories about him in the media within the last year.

8 albums? That's a lot more than most people produce. Is that Too Short?muddlehead1;842644044 said:
One group, or artist tops the list in the book with 8 albums.

Critics loved Bowie because there was a lot of artifice and he kept reinventing himself. An interesting performer but how many of you have 8 David Bowie albums? I'm going on 3,

The proof is in the pudding. The last several cuts on his greatest hits double album markedly tail off in quality--but that first disc is pretty solid. Guns and Roses Greatest Hits pretty much shoots its wad after 5 tracks and Red Hot Chili Peppers Greatest Hits gets a bit deeper. Stones, Doors, Beatles, Led Zep, and Who can go for miles. Pearl Jam's GH is two pretty solid discs.

With Pearl Jam it's pretty much Alive only.
Bowie fans rate everything he did as great, but he did have some clunkers like Lodger from 1979:

Exile is BY FAR the best stones album. BY FAR!!!
I think the stones are clearly the answer to this, by the way. The best stretch from the 65 to 83. The albums from 68 to 78 (eight of them) would be on the list.

You are probably right about it being the Stones. They are overrated in my book. Yes, they have a good number of great songs, but they produced a lot of material and most of it I have no interest in.

This is exactly how I feel. They have maybe five or six songs I would listen to regularly, and in fact I think Gimme Shelter is the single greatest rock recording ever made. It's a frickin' masterpiece. But outside of a few songs, I have no interest in them.
That's funny, this is also the only Stones album I own, although I probably like it a little better than you. Happy is probably my favorite from this album, and Mick's not even singing it.
Looking back, I probably avoided the Stones because when I was a freshman in high school, "Miss You" was the big song, and I can't stand that song. That probably soured me on exploring their music.

Pearl Jam Ten is one of the great all time albums. You can't name a bad track. Vs. is also very good. Vitalogy is hit-and-miss and it goes downhill from there. The Pearl Jam 20 documentary has a great segment that kind of reveals (if you're paying attention) the music quality goes downhill over time as Eddie Vedder takes over songwriting duties from Stone Gossard (though Vedder always wrote the lyrics).

Until Bowie passed I had no idea how many albums he made. That's a lot of songs nobody has any interest in hearing. He has a hit rate something like a 2-star college recruit.
My theory being not all popular songs are any good, but most really good songs do achieve some level of popularity.
Flame away. . .
