Oaktown: In a vacuum the Spavital hire is concerning. But I think that he might team up with Dykes very well. In that sense he might be similar to TF but without the ego to always have things his way. That gives me hope that some of the problem areas with TF could go by the wayside, namely the vertical scheme, and the overaggressive playcalling on 3rd down etc.

I mean Spavital is young and has his career ahead of him.
Do you really think he needs to promote a system and generate meaningless late game stats like TF did?

Will Spavital want to go for the TD instead of the winning field goal late in the ASU game? Something that Dykes thankfully overruled resulting in Anderson's winning kick on 3rd down.

Will Spavital throw long on 3rd and 7?

Will Spavital keep Lasco and Goff in the game late against SDS if Cal is up by 28 points resulting in a season changing injury to Lasco?

You liked the Counzo Martin hire.
But Martin's ego is forcing Cal into half court basketball which isn't the strength of his players.
Martin is a great recruiter and so is Spavital. But I doubt Spavital will control the system like Martin does and hence I think those issues may not play out.

The problem with Franklin was that Dykes didn't really control him until the end. Spavital will be controlled.

I know this places a lot of faith in Dykes, something I don't think you have. And I would agree if we were talking about defense. But I'm not concerned about Dykes when it comes to offense.

Mechanics aren't the reason why they aren't great pro qb's. Liquor, making it rain and weed is.

Extreme side aches due to increased bubbles to the side. Screening recommended.

Delusions of grandeur and hallucinations. If you experience these symptoms, take Spavital with bourbon. Marijuana is recommended with Spavital; in fact it's encouraged. If you encounter symptoms of depression or feel suicidal, do not seek professional help. Take more Spavital, whiskey and marijuana until it goes away. If it doesn't go away, repeat

I know very little about Jake Spavital. I hope he does well.

However, I question bringing in a coordinator that has to accept the existing staff.

It will be interesting to compare Spavital's success at Cal in 2016 vs. Hoke as DC at Oregon who was also required to accept their existing defensive staff including the incompetent Don Pellum.

For the record, my (drunken) recollection is that we milked the last ~20 seconds, so we aren't talking about a choice between going for it and if we don't get the TD we lose the game. My recollection was that we had enough time to take a shot at the endzone, and if it failed we had a TO to burn to bring in the kicker for the win. SD overruled him and just let the clock wind down before sending the kicker out.

Yes
That is what happened.
I was there.

Initially there was about a minute left or maybe it was 40 secs.
But they ran a play to center it and then kicked.
They could have gone for the end zone several times before that but I think that Anderson was on a streak and Dykes had confidence in him.
Most were OK with the decision although I'm sure the other decision would have been OK too.

I don't know. If you can't kick a 20 yard game-winning field goal (while simultaneously taking all of the time off the clock) then you really shouldn't be in a power conference. And yeah, I know that Leach had some bad luck there, but his call was absolutely the right one - Even given that Halliday had set the NCAA record for passing yards against our D in that game. Sonny made the right call to kick it against ASU. I think taking a shot in the end zone would have been insane. If that had resulted in a pick, we would still be melting down. And rightly so.

Cal was up by 21 in the beginning of the 4th Quarter running out the clock when the injury to Lasco happened. I feel it is a gray area, especially in light of Arizona's huge comeback win against us the previous year where AZ scored 36 of its 49 points in the 4th quarter.

Comparing the SDS offense in 2015 to the UA offense of 2014 is really a stretch.
SDS had 7 points and there was less than 10 minutes.

If Cal had been playing Arizona I would not have had a problem with it.
For one thing UA is a conference game.

I also would not have had a problem with it had SDS closed it to 14. Go ahead and put them back in.
This may seem nitpicky on my part, but if it had been Goff that got hurt, everyone would be complaining about it and Cal would have won 4 games last season.

Yes, but AZ only had 13 at about this time in the game. Both were early season games.

Same results against almost the exact same opponents, but minus an All Conference QB? I think it won't be about just about the OC Coordinator, but also the Defensive Coordinator.

It's football. Injuries happen. No blame needs to be laid at anyone's feet for Lasco's injury. I'm disappointed that this is still being discussed. Frankly, it's ridiculous. He's a running back, and it was the beginning of the 4th Q in the second game of the season. **** happens.

There are only really TWO assistant coaches on offense he has to "accept" .... Jones and Peeler. No way you get rid of either one of those. He gets to pick his on RB coach )assuming we lose a D coach). What is the issue?

Poor origjnal post...

Probably outside wide receivers as well. Can't imagine we're going to continue with 2 DB coaches.

I take Spavital for my heartburn. I hope it works.

Jones must have pushed hard last year to get rid of the VS ... he's the OL coach and doing a great job.
Peeler - Recruiting sez it all and the receivers seemed to know what to do, got coached.

Dykes is HC and that's certainly part of the reason TF moved on ... because Dykes is being the HC, the guy in charge.
Anyone doubt that Dykes and Spav discussed staff, roles and responsibilities?
Coaching is also a Team effort; chaos abounds when it's not.
We've seen the result when the HC abdicates his responsibility, doesn't do his HC job.
