There is a large construction going on, currently foundation, bulldozing, etc. on the SE corner of Hearst and Shattuck?
It takes the whole space between Berkeley Way and Hearst and up to the Cal bldg on Hearst and Oxford?

Sometimes I can find the campus construction plans, but not so far.
I drove all around the block and looked at the fence on all 3 sides, ...nothing posted?

I hope it is student housing ...would you believe Cal cannot guarantee freshman housing for this fall?

I still haven't seen/heard anything either on what is to be done with the old Art Museum space.

New campus building: http://news.berkeley.edu/2015/12/02/berkeley-way-west/

There is a massive new student housing complex going up soon across the street from Speiker Plaza replacing Stiles Hall & the neighboring parking lot.

All of these projects plus the new art museum and aquatics complex represent a loss in parking capacity for the university.

It sucks that the psychology dept. is going to be way, way, way far away from the center of campus.

Sure, it's only a block away. But it'll be more apart of the downton/Gourmet Ghetto community that the campus community.

(On the other hand, people who will be spending a lot of time there will probably be grateful for their food options.)

There are no immediate plans to tear down the old brutalist Art Museum. Apparently, they are pondering what to do with it.

The Chron's John King wrote in December:

Asked what role the museum structure will play in coming years, Rinder pleaded ignorance: " Its fate is not known. Various people on campus have a desire to see it revived in some form." Certainly there's no desire to pick a fight with modern architecture buffs who have rallied nationwide around other Brutalist icons of late.

The best news is that Tolman Hall is being torn born after this new one is done. That is a major improvement to campus!

I spent nearly my entire undergraduate experience (late 90s, early 2000s) in Tolman Hall and Eshleman Hall.

Sure, they were/are terrible buildings.

I'm just sad that 30 years from now, when I'm an old man, I can't revisit those buildings and reminisce.

It sucks especially because there are a number of buildings that have been around for a century, and even a century and a half.

But these '60s-built buildings couldn't make it half a century.

In my ideal world, they tear down the old BAM and build a 2nd residential college a la Bowles.

In my ideal world, they would build a huge dorm on the site of People's Park. That would solve two problems at once.

Yes, that would certainly help. And I've heard that Bob Lalanne wants to do just that. But I do not believe that the faculty or staff would back the university in the epic fight that would ensue. Bigger than the CMS remodel imo. In fact, I strongly believe our faulty would come out against it.

Side note, I did hear there's a plan for a university parking structure on Oxford.

I agree that the faculty would likely oppose it; but sooner or later the administration needs to demonstrate some balls and stand up for what's best for the overall university community, rather or not that position pleases the faculty. The faculty exerts too much power over things that have little or nothing to do with academics.

I agree. It's going to have to happen. I just don't think this era of administrative Cal has the political capital to make it happen.
