'02 and '03 were awesome. Nobody had any expectations whatsoever the first two years, so anything Tedford did was gravy. And there was plenty of gravy.....70 points against Baylor, win on the road against Michigan State, beating UW for the first time, blowing out furd, and of course one awesome night against USC.

I'm not sure why our last two years (5-7 and 8-5 after 2013's 1-11) haven't quite had that same "anything is possible" feeling. Maybe I've just turned hard and cynical.

You mentioned it yourself. It was 8-5, yes, but we beat everyone we should've beat. There were no upsets. When will we again see a game where we know we are clear cut underdogs, but yet come out on top. I know it's a lot to ask, but it's been a while...

When was the last time by your estimate? 2003 USC?

based on approx vegas lines, Cal is 4-26 (13.3%) in the last 30 games in which we were underdogs. and our record for covering the spread is 10-20 (33.3%).

last times Cal has won as underdogs:

Nov 1, 2014 CAL 45 OREGST 31 W -4.0
Oct 4, 2014 CAL 60 WSHST 59 W -4.5
Aug 30, 2014 CAL 31 NWESTN 24 W -7.5
Oct 6, 2012 UCLA 17 CAL 43 W +2.5

needless to say, the victory against UCLA was the most impressive of the 4.

for reference, other schools records as underdogs (in last 30 instances), and spread record:
UCLA: 10-20 (33.3%), 13-17 (43.3%) spread
Furd: 14-16 (46.6%), 18-12 (60%) spread
USC: 13-17 (43.3%), 16-14 (53.5%) spread
Oregon: 17-13 (56.6%), 21-9 (70%) spread

note: for Furd, and Oregon, the bulk of the 30 underdog games happened before 2007. Cal's most recent 30 starts in September 2012.

Got to be beating UCLA with Maynard in 2012. That one was completely out of left field.

Unfortunately, it was in the middle of an awful season.

JT is a good cat. He did what he could do at Cal and had success. He gave his all through the Tree Sitter Debacle and continued to fight on........... Grandmas, Muffins, Trees and a reluctant administration drained the life out of JT - as it would anyone else.

JT should not be judged by his last years - IMO..............

Go Bears!

Best W/L record since Pappy, warts and all... Case closed.

Solid guy, good times, great legacy, and I still have the shirt to prove it!

He did the program well for many years, but it did not finish well.

2005 Ayoob was getting boo'd and eventually benched, 2007 we won only 3 Pac-10 games and finished near the bottom of the conference. 2008 was Longshore vs Riley QB controversy...and a trip to the Nut Bowl. 2004 and 2006 were the near-BCS years. So close.

Sorry for the microagression!

We were mentioned as BCS contenders before and during each of those season (esp. 2007 since we got up to #2). Where we landed (hard) was not my main point although like you said, 2004/2006 we almost got there. I actually consider that JT did more than enough to garner a BCS in 2004 but for Mack and also but for one less BCS bowl at the time. So essentially it was a BCS season as far as I'm concerned.
