Right a way this kind of article makes you think - Why? Is college only about the money and not the life experience that impacts the rest of your existence?

Still I was hooked and had to check it out, and at #22 was a UC Campus with some pretty dismal reported earnings potential for it's graduates.

http://colleges.startclass.com/stories/7056/colleges-alumni-salaries-high-school-grads?utm_medium=cm&utm_source=outbrain&utm_campaign=rt.cm.ob.dt.7056#4-UC-Santa-Cruz

Immediately I questioned the accuracy of the whole premise as the data compiler obviously was a little weak on fact checking when it was stated that UC Santa Cruz was the second
oldest campus in the UC system. Santa Cruz opened when I was a HS senior; I never considered it an option as it didn't have an engineering department (or a football team:p).
Still the reported earnings of it's graduates six and ten years out is pretty poor. If that campus a 'failed concept' or just bad fact checking?

Occupy liberal arts majors don't draw salaries.

It was a serious place during Vietnam. In the early 80s? No way. That's the period I have knowledge of from visiting some friends there. That is where Cal rejects were redirected with a shot at getting in down the road.

My two sisters are Banana Slugs, both make over 100k. One of them is banking that with only a Santa Cruz degree and no grad school. College is what you make of it.

I'm not surprised that they would be low on a salary ranking, but those figures are ridiculous. 29k median? Something seems off. That's bad even for teachers.

I guess all the weed really does make you too lazy to get a job

To start with it isn't t the second oldest, but the second youngest in the UC system. Whoever wrote it, had their head up their ass.

It's obvious. Almost all graduates stay in Santa Cruz to surf. Pay is low, but the waves, man, the waves...

These stats tend to speak more to the motives and motivation of the graduates than the quality or earning potential of the school. If you work hard and manage your career, pretty much any college degree will get you a decent-paying job (though some will help more than others). And vice-versa.

There still seems to be an illusion that someone can walk out with a college degree and be handed a good job - and the better the degree, the better the job. That was certainly true (to some extent) in the 60s and 70s, but hasn't been the case for over 20 years now. Of course the smart, talented and hardworking do better over time, but the direct benefit of a degree is minimal at this point.

Agreed, doesn't make sense.

I would think Andy Samberg alone would elevate those numbers for UCSC. And isn't he originally from Berkeley?
