Quality chancellors and head coaches willing to come to Berkeley are going to be hard to find.

We need a hardass who is not going to take **** from the faculty and tell them to stay in line.

Someone who can make timely decisions and is more cognizant of bad PR, would be a good start.

I would trust the people on this board with this hire more than the people who are actually going to be doing the hiring. Can't wait for more Cal Soap Opera in the years to come. Should be a series on Bravo.

I didn't mind the escape hatch. If his life was being threatened then I wouldn't blame him for wanting a quick way out. Wasn't it chancellor Tien who was attacked in his home by an intruder?

Yeah, seriously, that's complete bullsh*t. I'm sure anyone who's going off about how this is further evidence that our beloved university is circling the drain, probably hated Dirks' hire in the first place. So complaining about him leaving makes no sense.

Our university has tremendous upside in SO many areas and it's not unreasonable to expect that Dirks' replacement will be someone who's able to take full advantage of it. At least that's what I'm told by "The Law of Averages", my friend who allows me to sleep at night.

U.C. Berkeley needs to hire a retired, 4 star Marine General to be the next Chancellor. Period.

I really liked him to start, but I gotta say, I'm not that upset to see him go. As time went on, he seemed like a clumsy manager.

But he raised lots of money, and that requires enormous effort in establishing the relationships possible for major donations. Birgeneau was a cheerleader and I liked the contrasting diligence of Dirks.

Also, I remember sitting in a parking lot of a Safeway in San Jose listening to a Dirks radio interview in July 2013 and texting all my friends that he was for real. What the hell happened since then??

Dirks seemed pro-athletics so that's the lens through which I judge him. Sorry to see him go.

Dirks got screwed by a concerted effort of the academic senate to discredit him because he came in as a cost cutter / fund raiser / change maker / modernizer. The unfortunate part is that he was not able to make any changes yet. Perhaps in the next year as a lame duck he can do that. There is a huge entrenched lobby that makes it almost impossible to move anything ahead in Berkeley.

Of course, we probably have more quality professors here because of that huge entrenched lobby - they have more power here than at any other university, and I ams use many are willing to stay in Berkeley for less money due to that leverage. But it does make it hard to modernize the system.

Lots of people were interviewed to take over Wilton's spot and no one was actually hired because there was way too much stuff going on.

Dirks is retiring from the chancellorship and is going to continue on as a history professor at Cal, and stay in Berkeley. He (his wife) has family here, etc.

Every time there's a new chancellor, there's always a chance it could be someone like Berdahl or Heyman that agrees with the "let's dump athletics and be the University of Chicago" faction. Dirks seemed to get that that was not a viable approach anymore, given the need for alumni donations to make up the money cut by Sacramento.

As much as the Right wants to paint Obama as a pinko commie non-American muslim, he's just a typical politician in many ways.

Obama matriculated at Occidental College, then got degrees from Columbia and Harvard, and later was a lecturer at U. Chicago. All private institutions. I doubt we'll ever see him at a pubic institution, especially on the west coast.

Yeah, I don't see a former POTUS leading a campus, but he does have links to his grandparents, who raised him, who briefly attended UC Berkeley and went on to the University of Washington.


Fun fact: 3 of the last 5 presidential elections have featured an Occidental College alum on a major ticket.
